Great video. You are possibly the only company to show installation within a wood trim. For clarification are you completely cutting the zbar fin/frame with the multitool or scoring and snapping? Last question, for securing the window with screws, do you drill a slightly biggger hole to fit the screw head through the first layer. Much appreciated!

I was a Glazier for many years , this technique on leaving the perimeter frame in would be a huge time saver but I think a lot of customers would not accept this kind of a short cut .

Very cool, you did this on my birthday last year. I have 1957 aluminum windows, which are atrocious. 6 @ 39w by 36t, 1 @ 39w by 51t, 2 @ 12w by 51t and then a small wooden window that's not able to open that I'd like replaced. I only want single hung... I priced the windows, a single hung 39x36 is about $100 at home depot so let's just say the windows would be about $2k at most. My problem is when quoted to have replaced they want around $12 to $15k... wow. I assume they get windows even cheaper than that so most of that huge amount of money is going towards labor... which I just can't afford. So my question to you is what do you think is a fair amount for labor to replace one aluminum window to a vinyl window? Thank in advance for any reply.

Hi Lisa, great question! Let me just say this, not all vinyl windows are created equal. The inexpensive windows found at the big box stores will not last very long, and are made to be inexpensive. If you want great windows with a great warranty, and installed the right way, you will get what you pay for. For 9 windows (retro installation) we would be closer to $1000 per opening installed, on average, this is minus painted windows, specialty windows like casements and combo unit stackable windows, ect. I would just be sure to get multiple quotes "apples to apples" to get a good idea what you are getting, and always check the rating and certifications of a company you plan to hire for your window replacement project.

what do you do to prevent vinyl dust? I had a previous house with windows like these and the wind blew the vinyl debree throughout all the community? I purchased another property similar. Do others complain about this?

Hi Claudia, I wonder what brand of vinyl windows were in the home, because the windows we install do not create a vinyl dust. My thought though is this; the windows must have been created with very inexpensive materials (vinyl), and the dust on the exterior which is caused by the suns UV rays, gets carried by the wind. I would be very concerned and reach out to the builder to find information on the brand used and file a complaint. Sorry to hear about that. The brand we use blends Titanium Dioxide in the vinyl which eliminates that dust and discoloration.

Was/is the glass a standard size?? Curious why not just remove the whole window and frame and replace?

This is a retro window replacement, leaving the main frames in, and sealing new windows just inside the original window area. This saves a customer time and money. Also, there is no need to break stucco and therefore the need to stucco patch and color match which can get expensive. Done properly, this is an excellent option for our customers. This is showing how we do it with a wood border around the windows exterior.

no way i take out the metal frame put my flashing tape, inspect the seal do what needs to be repaired first whim caulk and replace. you put a new window and could leave rotten wood and etc. nope nope nope.

To be fair...the Before pics should have shown clean windows instead of dirt and spider webs. Also, the Before and After pics should have been level with each other to reveal the HUGE difference in window pane loss in new window. Also, the new window comes with unequal finned finish. Did you guys not measure to ensure that all 4 sides of window have same amount of vinyl showing? Top and bottom are worlds away from sides. For the backside of an apartment with energy concerns this may be ok, but for curbside apeal or a single family dwelling this is not acceptable. Who would want 3" of vinyl at top and bottom and 1" on sides? In your words "This is how it should look all the way around @6:10." The trim should look equal all the way around. This would not be featured in a showroom.

Rocco, not all wood trim around an existing window is dead even...period. You install the window to give the best coverage of the main frame for the best seal, and obviously look (i.e., no gaps, ect.) The window turned out amazing and the customer was absolutely happy with their new windows and doors. I appreciate your feedback.

Cheap windows yes. High grade vinyl windows with the proper thermally reflective paint are extremely resistant to fade. There is a difference.
