In this video, I am mainly trying to explain why we decided to replace OTR Microwave with a range hood. What does it involve. And some before and after comparisons.
Used KOBE Range Hoods CHX9130SQB-1 Brillia in this video (amzn.to/2iPdsnZ). Temporary hood is amzn.to/2ky3EzV
Please refer below videos for more details
Removing over the range microwave

Here is the installation video of the KOBE model
• KOBE Under Cabinet Ins...
Another very useful video for installation that covers protecting the gas range and using jack

Also in my case, there was some gap at the backside, and so i attached a duct collar from home depo (www.homedepot....)

I work in the US with lots of great Indian guys but typically they don't know about home maintenance and repairs because they grew up with the luxury of hiring low-cost contractors. I am happy to see your very good analysis and description of performing this task!

My wife is Indonesian and many times cooks salted fish and very spicy food that will fill the whole house. I was looking for a new microwave with 400 cfm, but after seeing this, you might have convinced me to buy a hood instead. Very good video, thanks!!!

Only problem I see (besides the current $700 Amazon / Kobe price tag), is where do you put the displaced microwave? Assume you need to buy a new one, since that old one is a dedicated over-the-stove model.

Thank you for the video. I'm planning to do the same thing in a house my wife and I just bought. We will have to check that we can get more of the back splash tile to cover the bare wall previously covered by the microwave. For those concerned about the microwave, if you can't place it on the countertop, donate it to the salvation army and buy a new one. Microwaves are not that expensive.

Looks nice but I hate how so many hoods have the buttons on bottom where they are going to get greasy rather than on front. I'm sure they do it for aesthetics but I'm utilitarian.

My parents have a similar type of range hood previously. One big draw back is the gaps where the air is drawn through gets filled with grease over time and is a real pain to clean.
@bobbygetsbanned6049
@bobbygetsbanned6049 Жыл бұрын
That's not a drawback, that's by design. They are supposed to catch the grease to keep the motor clean, otherwise the exhaust fan would get clogged with grease. Other types of good have replaceable filters but then you have to buy new filters when they get dirty.

Hello Pankaj, I was sooo close to ordering this Kobe hood last night. That is until I checked some measurements. Can you tell me what the clearance is between the top of your range to the bottom of the Kobe hood? The manufacturer states a min of 26 inches and max of 30 inches from the range surface. I am below the minimum by 3 inches.

Thank you so much Pankaj! I was debating whether to replace my OTR microwave with more powerful (400cfm) microwave range; or getting a powerful 600-750 cfm range hood and a smaller countertop microwave. Your video answered my question. 400CFM vented is NOTHING! For my spicy cooking, I think I really need to go for high CFM (at least 600 CFM) range hood and get a smaller countertop microwave. Thanks again, Pankaj!

Hi Pankaj, did you install a make up air damper and backdraft damper for your range hood? Are these important for range hood installation? As for cleaning, is it sufficient just to dish wash the baffle filters? Thanks.
@pankajchandel3349
@pankajchandel3349 6 жыл бұрын
Yes. there was some gap at the back in my case. So I used a duct collar (www.homedepot.com/p/3-1-4-in-x-10-in-Rectangular-Stack-Duct-Starting-Collar-SCF3-25X10/100139382). And yes its sufficient to dish wash the filter

No make up air damper installed. But these homes have pressure balancing fresh air intake at the furnace to pull the fresh air from outside via different filter. This also opens when whole house fan runs. But as per code, make up air damper may be required if this is above 400CFM. check local regulations. In general we never have to run this in full speed, always in Quiet mode, or rarely Low speed. Also if weather permits we open a window in dining area so fresh air pulled from there which helps better exhaust.

Sorry about missing that part man. It was a tricky installation and i was so busy to make it work, i forgot to shoot that part. So i just filled the Microwave backpanel holes and painted the remaining space with the same red accent color that i had on top of cabinet.

Pankaj, could you show how to use aluminum tape to seal the rectangular vent between the rear of the range hood and the inner wall opening? Does the rectangular piece get inserted into the wall opening?
@pankajchandel3349
@pankajchandel3349 7 жыл бұрын
I cant show it now as the vent is there already. But in my case i was not too sure that i could seat it properly from inside. So i went outside the house and applied tape from outside anyways. If you have more gap at the back, then an adapter like below will help www.homedepot.com/p/Speedi-Products-10-in-x-3-25-in-x-6-in-Galvanized-Sheet-Metal-Range-Hood-Straight-Boot-Adapter-SM-RH3106-SB/202907196?MERCH=REC-_-SearchPLPHorizontal1_rr-_-NA-_-202907196-_-N

We are still using the same OTR microwave on our counter top right now as it can also be used that way. The exhaust fan that throws air at the back does not run when we just use the microwave. We have a separate button that runs the fan. But it looks too big on counter top and we will eventually replace it with a smaller unit (around 1.5 cubit feet size)

The top vent cover and the rear adapter i have shown in the video was included in the package. However in my house, there was still about 9 inches of gap at the back AFTER positioning the hood. So i had to add one more adapter like below at the back: www.homedepot.com/p/Speedi-Products-10-in-x-3-25-in-x-6-in-Galvanized-Sheet-Metal-Range-Hood-Straight-Boot-Adapter-SM-RH3106-SB/202907196?MERCH=REC-_-SearchPLPHorizontal1_rr-_-NA-_-202907196-_-N

Why were you replacing the microwave with a range hood?
@DBVintage
@DBVintage 3 жыл бұрын
Likely because those OTR ventilating microwaves lack the power to exhaust the smell and fumes generated by stir frying and similar cooking. A range hood with a powerful blower is way better.
