This vid gave me a good baseline on my '97 Prizm. Just looking at the access to the top bolt it was obviously going to take some finagling. They also put a little sturdy metal lip for clamping a hose to right about an inch or so from the bolt head making it nearly impossible to get to.. I had to unclip the hose and just bang that tab down flush like screw it. Even then could just barely get a ratchet in there to unscrew it 1 click at a time. It's like they did calculus figuring you JUST enough room to do the finger tip unscrewing. Laying the front end on some jack stands I had just enough room to work with both hands under the vehicle with the stands only up one notch. Was able to do all the hard bolt breaking from over top not worrying about the car coming down on me lol. It can be done with a cheap ratchet set without any extensions but it does take a bit of 'messing with it' and some GOJO.

I'll also mention my diagnostics for others to help diagnosing their own. My car currently will start, but usually it takes turning the key several times. When I turn and hold the key in the start position, I hear a faint buzzing/whirring noise. This noise will happen every time I turn the key, and usually it takes 10-20 turns for the engine to actually start. The other method for starting I use when I can is to have someone hold the key in the start position while I gently tap the starter with a small hammer/piece of rebar. Doing this it starts every time. So something to try if you suspect the starter or are experiencing similar with your own corolla.

@@AutoFixYT just got back now and boy was that a terrible thing to get haha! I found removing the air filter was necessary to see the top bolt, and I had to remove a bolt that was holding a mount for the wiring as well to be able to get a socket on. The bottom bolt was the difficult one though. Super awkward position. Trying to find space between the exhaust and plating as well as the axle to work was quite difficult. Doesn't help everything was covered in grease and it was sleeting on me while I worked. But I got the starter out. I had 10 cars ranging from '93-'97 and found that the 94 had the easiest access to the starter. The 97 would be much worse for getting the top bolt out. All in all, I think if this starter is a lemon I'll probably either use an engine hoist and pull the whole motor rather than finagling with a socket wrench in tight spaces. Would probably save some time. The video truly is invaluable! I just wish I would have payed more attention to the bottom bolt since I ended up accidentally taking out the wrong bolt on my first try. I also ended up just cutting the wires for the click style fastener because it was nearly impossible in that position and covered in grease, plus it's a junkyard car anyways not my own. Removing my current starter will require more patience but at least I'll have a warm garage to work in. Cheers and thanks for the instruction!

Hello, thanks for the video, quick question I’m trying remount the new starter on and the top bolt threads no problem, but the bottom bolt seems like somehow it’s not long enough? I pulled the starter off and put the bottom bolt in and threaded it to be sure that there’s nothing wrong.. is this something to do with alignment of the starter?
@AutoFixYT5 ай бұрын
Yeah it can be the alignment of the starter, make sure you don't have the wrong bolt, and make sure you don't have the wrong starter. If it fits with the original starter but not the new one, somethings wrong with the starter

Does the connection cable disconnect with a pull or do you need a flat head screwdriver? You kinda went really fast on that part at the beginning.
@AutoFixYT2 жыл бұрын
There are two wires attached to the starter. One is the main power wire which is always live, so disconnect your battery first, then use a socket and unbolt the nut, then pull the wire off the stud. The second one is a small thin wire that has an electrical connector with a tab that you have to squeeze and pull out at the same time. That should slide out at that point. Then you unbolt the starter and you're done

Ok that's not good... that means the teeth if the starter were not engaging with the flywheel/flexplate (manual or auto trans) properly. You definitely need a new starter, but what I would do is remove the starter, and with it out have someone spin the engine over from the crank clockwise. That should spin the flywheel/flex plate, if you have a manual make sure you're not in gear obviously. Auto you can be in park. What I would do is make a mark where you start and make sure you check the whole flywheel/flexplate all the wat around, one whole rotation. Look at all those teeth. If they look chewed up and worn, it's time to pull the trans off and replace it. And if it's a standard it's time for a new clutch too, because you have to take it off to replace the flywheel anyway. However, if the teeth on the starter look good, and you don't see much damage on the existing flywheel/flexplate, then just replace the starter and it should be good! Hope this helps!
@AutoFixYT4 жыл бұрын
Also, to be more specific, you can't do any internal damage to the engine or the trans just from the starter doing that. If there is damage it's only going to be on the flywheel or the flex plate

Hey great vids as usual! Hello again! I have a 97 Corolla with 55k on it. Im trying to narrow down what my issue is. Recently weve been having starting issues. Upon starting her up (not every time) but every so often nothing will happen. So basically its key turn, no engine sound, no response, and in the backgroung is a latent humming sound like there is power on but not engaging the engine. Neither the battery light nor the engine light has come on, so im guessing this is either the alternator, the starter, or maybe the battery. It's possible this happens moreso on colder days. Any insights?
@AutoFixYT5 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the comment! So to clarify a little bit before I give you an answer... sometimes when you turn the key the starter doesn't engage, but you do get all the dashboard lights?

@@AutoFixYT oh yes sorry, yes everything on the dash lights up when i turn it to the on position. But the starting process does not begin, and also there is no noise or any engagement with the engine, it turns all the way to right and does nothing. Recently on a really cold day i had to do it around 12 times to get it to start. And on that last attempt it seemed like a struggle for it to get on. Then today it turns on with no problems lol.

Ok that sounds like a bad starter to me. It could be a bad relay but those starters tend to go bad on those Toyotas. I would take the starter out (I have a video on that, its not that hard) and take it to the nearest auto parts store where they should be able to test it. Or you can test it yourself by giving it power and ground with some jumper cables and see if it wants to pop out and engage. I had the same exact issue on my Corolla three years ago and had to do the starter. I will warn you though, I bought an autozone starter which then failed a year ago so I had to do the job another time. But luckily they have lifetime warranty on their parts. So to me that sounds like a bad starter and I would replace that first before you get stranded somewhere. When mine went bad I was lucky enough to have a standard so I was able to push start it when it stopped working haha

So update, the guy was wrong it was where you show it at in this vid I think he just wasn’t used to it being there based on the Toyota’s he worked on. Also I think since we weren’t working on the tranny just trying to the starter out by itself required him to take off the right tire because he couldn’t reach past wiring and hosing under the left side. Other than that once he figured out how to reach it the disassemble and addicting of the replacement was like you said. Thanks for everything. Our Toyota is still up and going. Always enjoy your vids.
