Just wanted to post a quick update, almost 2 years later, to say that the repair has held up perfectly - no weird noises, no leaks. The washer is now 10 years old and is showing signs of age in other areas. I had an issue with the "Start" button on the control panel, for example. I am expecting to have issues with the "Power" button as well since they are the most heavily used buttons. Unfortunately, those buttons seem to be replaced as an assembly - a very expensive assembly!

At 8 years, your machine was at the life expectancy of ANY Washer except SPEED QUEEN. Cabrio is particularly troublesome. I'd recommend Whirlpool's World Washer made under all the WP family of brands including MAYTAG, Amana, Admiral and others. It has a more traditional looking DC motor and a "Splutch" (about $18) in place of a transmission and clutch. Bearing replacement is a bit easier too. The main thing is the mostly nylon and plastic parts are much cheaper to buy. It is still electronically complicated with the pump, and agitation and spin speeds controlled by the Electronic Control board. The 24 page tech manual is hidden behind front cabinet panel. Probably was in your Cabrio as well. Seals and belts are made of neoprene now instead of natural rubber. Neoprene is more durable, heat, grease and water resistant and will not dry out and disintegrate from age.

Keep your eyes peeled on the Facebook Market place. You may find a compatable replacement part, or parts if you know how to sauder for free. Broken washing machines are given away free by people who just want to get rid of them frequently.

I keep getting told that the kit wont work for my machine even though the model number matches unless my tub has been replaced. Could that have been the issue with the shaft in your case?
@shadowopsairman1583

This is the worst designed washer, same with the Bravos and Oasis. That shaft has been known to never get unstuck and thus damages the tub, plus the units are known to leak even after putting in new parts correctly. Thow that turd away.

Thanks for making the video. I did my Cabrio Platinum today -- guess it took about 3 or 4 hrs (total with a few beer/snack breaks). I watched a couple other videos (from appliance part/repair companies/etc), but yours was the most helpful (except I was ready with a 2x4 and floor jack for the tub like I saw in one of the other videos, but like yours, my tub would move up/down about 3/4 of an inch, but not come off... looking closely at the shaft, there was a lip/build up on edge that was catching -- I sanded it smooth and the tub slipped right out). I'm very glad you didn't edit out the issues/problems/mistakes -- that's what made the video so helpful. This will be our last Whirlpool set - the quality is very low. The top has lots of rust (have to keep sanding/appliance painting the areas you can see), the bearings have been bad for over a year, and there's a small leak when it fills (I was hoping it was seal related, but it seems exactly the same after the bearing/seal replacement). But now that it doesn't sound like a jet taking off, maybe we can get another year out of it -- $55 well spent!

I have the "Cabrio Platinum" ...also about 7 yrs old almost identical model#. I'm getting a high pitch squeel which sound like the spindle bearing? It also is leaking a bit...where from exactly, I don't know. At this point I'm considering throwing it away and buying an older Whirlpool/Kenmore in good shape? What would you do? I'm still working at 65 and work 12 hour shifts, so my time is limited..though I Do like to make my own repairs. Your opinion matters! Thanks! Great well done video!

So, I decided to refer to the same video and repeated the process of changing the shaft. Once again, it successfully fixed the problem. Thank you for this excellent "real life" repair video. I have one comment: I had the same problem when trying to put the shaft in after replacing everything. But upon feeling around the inside at the top of the sleeve between the bearings, I noticed that the sleeve was shifted slightly off from being concentric with the bearings. I used the rod that came with tool (for knocking out the bearings) and gently tapped around inside the top of the sleeve to align it with the top bearing, and then the shaft slid in nicely.

Amazing video, did it today. To remove the tub I put a 2x4 across the top resting it on the washer housing, and ratchet strapped the inside of the tub top with hooks to the 2x4. Pulled it tight then used a 3lb sledge on the old shaft. Worked like a dream. Also putting the new shaft in I greased it, put a wood block on the top and hammered it in. Worked perfect. Couldn't have done it without you! Cheers.

Thanks for the great instructions. Prior to replacement sound level was 85db 3 feet from my washer, about like a loud gas mower. After shaft and bearing replacement average through cycle was 55db, about like a conversation. Put new shaft in deep freeze night before, made sure new bearings and spacers were seated and aligned and new shaft went in easily with a few taps. I wrote out the narrative and it totalled 45 steps, it was very accurate, a very good job. Great video!

Joe you're video very helpful. I just did my 7-year old Cabrio yesterday, took 3 hours, thanks. Washer works very well now, much quieter. Used Octopus kit, $60 on Amazon including installation tool. Fingers crossed since its a (cheap) knock-off. Learnings: My basket came out amazingly easy (luck). A short-handled hammer would be useful inside tub, Upper bearing really stuck. Finally soaked with wd-40, taped a socket to the old metal bearing spacer and used 3-pound hammer. Inclusion and use of thrust bearing for installation confusing to me since its a throw-away. Apparently the upper/lower bearings have thrust capabilities. I had trouble getting the seal to seat all the way and concerned how hard I had to "tap" it. Whirlpool should be ashamed of themselves for this bearing failure in such a (relatively) new, low-hours machine.

Thank you I'm glad you found the video helpful! My 8-year-old Cabrio has quite a few hours on it so I'm not complaining. I would have preferred that that the OEM Whirlpool bearing kit included higher-quality bearings.

Thanks for the video. I completed this repair today, and I did run into one issue which I will share here, with the hope of benefiting others. For some reason, as I was pressing the bearings, the spacer became damaged somehow and did not allow the upper bearing to seat all the way. I hammered the upper bearing out and tried again 5 times, and still could not get it to seat fully. When I tried to put the shaft in, it would not turn. I removed the upper bearing again, removed the spacer, noticed the damage, and decided to try assembling it without the spacer. It seemed to work perfectly, the bearing finally seated, and the shaft turned smoothly, but I'm not sure the potential consequences. When I subsequently installed the seal, it was perfectly level with the tub. I'm testing it now on the "clean washer" cycle which fills the tub all the way, and it's not leaking so far.
@ericicenhour166
@ericicenhour166 Жыл бұрын
Has it given you any problems yet from not having the spacer? I did the same thing about a year and a half ago after I couldn't see any reason for the spacer. Made it much easier to reassemble. However, the past couple of weeks my washer has developed a loud squeak when the tub is spinning. I think it's coming from the seal and that maybe I didn't apply enough lube. So I'm going to replace the seal but I still wonder about that spacer tube and wondered if you'd had any issues.

I just used this video to fix my Whirlpool Cabrio. I'm on my fifth or 6th load post fix and everything's going well. Thanks so much for making this video. the only thing that bothers me is that when I put the tub back in and attemped to screw back in that plastic plate with the 6 screws, it was about 2mm proud of where it should be. It didn't sit directly on the inner tub. Anyway I screwed the thing in with the six screws, screwed in the agitator and attached the cap. Thanks again.

@@lindseyandsons4059 Well, for what it's worth my washer's been running for more than a month at about 6 or so washes a week. That is the Fisher Paykel New Zealand design. The company was taken over by Haier China. Most early machines computers blew up before the shaft wore out. To get the inner tub out stick a 1/2 inch thin long socket on the shaft swing your leg over press down on the socket and give the tub a good pull. Pull out the outer tub with pipe wires pump and motor and get easy access to everything. It is a much better tool now to insert the bearings. I used to give the old motors from scrap machines to university solar car projects to drive across Australia.

**SOLVED!** Like I said earlier. After pressing in the new bearings, I hammered on the shaft trying to get it to drop down all the way. Beat on it forever. No luck. Thought it was a faulty shaft or faulty bearings.. turns out I was missing a huge key component. The top bearing, spacer, washer, and bottom bearing, have to sandwiched TIGHT together. Had to remove the shaft, hook up the bearing press tool again and turn that thing just about as hard as I possibly could. It finally dropped the top bearing down and squeezed everything together tight in between the two bearings. Then inserted the new (cheap/aftermarket) shaft, a few TAPS with the hammer and it popped all the way down nice, plenty of threads sticking out the bottom and spins nice and straight. So the key was so sandwich the heck out of those bearing pieces. Good luck. I'll be starting it up tomorrow once the seal adhesive cures.

I just did this job. Wish I had seen the air chisel trick. I tried putting a 22.5” 2x4 crossways under the lip at the top of the tub with a screw jack between the shaft tip and the 2x4. The tub was seized so bad I broke the first 2x4, but the second 2x4 separated the tub from the shaft. I’m betting the chisel would have worked better.

Yeah air chisels are amazingly useful for a lot of things. Unfortunately if you're on a job site compressed air is not always available. They might make electric versions not sure

The only negative I had to say about the video is not giving us a call listing ahead of time I spent probably 20 to 30 minutes running up and down stairs out to the garage to grab tools. 1-1/4” deep well if you have an impact, pipe wrench and adjustable works too 1/4” socket 7/16” socket 3/8” socket #2 Phillips 1/4” Allen Dead blow Hammer

I just did mine and when I was all done everything worked except the water pump. I pulled the hose off the water pump and there was parts from where the bearings went out inside the water pump. Don't forget to check that while you have your washer on its side.

About to start this repair next week (waiting on parts in mail). Mine started leaking out the bottom of the washer, through the holes in the rotor.. it definitely does not look like a fun job but I'm just trying to get a few more years out of it before buying a new one. Thanks again for the video, wish me luck and I'll post again next week how it went.

Though I wonder if mine needed replacing at all. They seemed to be in good shape. That top seal was definitely damaged so just a matter of time though. I had two issues. 1 was the sud error over and over again. When I removed the drum somehow a tshirt or part of a tshirt had made its way in between the drum & basen. Got clogged and shredded into the drain filter area. Then the loud motorcycle noise occasionally. Which when changing looks like it is caused the that small plastic piece under it. It has most teeth rubbed down. It fit tightly on the new one. But if it happens again I know that’s the part to replace and it will be easy. Just take the agitator off.

I pulled my Cabrio apart... the bearings were fine. An issue with corrosion on the shaft preventing the basket from lifting (and getting an OL error). I'm contemplating NOT messing with the bearings (I bought a whole kit) and just popping in the new shaft. I know I SHOULD change the bearings but to me it seems like risk messing with something that is not an issue as is. Thoughts?

It was brutal... The worst part by far as installing the new shaft after installing the bearings. The replacement bearings didn't appear to be original NSK quality... wonder if they were a fraction of a thousandth off? Regardless, the machine is a lot quieter now and working great (fingers crossed...).

I did this and I thought everything was going well, but when I got near the end of reassembly, the basket hub did not sit flush on the base of the basket. The only thing I can think is the shaft is not in far enough. There are a few threads showing beyond the nut. I had I hate to break that seal, but not sure what else to do, but take it all back apart and grease the shaft down.
