The distance between the infra-red lights indicated the distance between you and the sensor bar, so if you put them closer to each other, the wiimote will think you're further away from the sensor bar and vice versa.

The sensor bar is just made up of 2 (I think the new Wii U ones have 4) IR or Infrared LEDs to have a light the sensor on the front of the controller cab pick up. And you know what also gives off IR light... Fire. And that's why it works.

@@Jacknoham that's the thing, it doesn't need to, that's why you can buy battery powered sensor bars, all the sensor bar is are 2 IR (Infrared) LEDs like the ones inside TV remotes, it's just backwards on the wii, instead of the sensor being on the TV and the light on the remote, the light is on the TV (sensor bar) and the sensor is on the wii remote, the "sensor" bar actually doesn't sense anything, all it does is provide a source of IRS for the remote to actually sense, and you know what else creates Infrared light? That's right, fire 😂

Even those USB sensor bars sold on Amazon work on official consoles. I thought sensor bars send data to the console via the cable, but I guess it sends it to the Wii remote, and the Wii remote sends it to the console

It doesnt do anything. The sensor bar is only a bunch of LEDs : some lights that function as IR blasters. So basically the wii remote is marking its position using the light emitted by the sensor bar. So in the end, the wii only gives power to the sensor bar.

lol...Wrong...The sensor bar doesn't send anything to the wiimote, the wiimote gathers the data itself. The sensor bar just gives an IR light for the wiimote to detect.

If you're talking about the flameless (LED) candles, it will not work because they won't emit invisible infrared light the Wiimote detects like the sensor bar LEDs and the flame would. The visible colored LEDs we see everyday only emit light in a very narrow band at a certain wavelength.

I cant believe I have a use case for this. I'm assembly line softmoding 4 wii's and I want the wii's to be sat on my desk hooked up to a tv across the room. the cord doesn't reach I've been placing the sensor bar on a table half way between my desk and the tv. I'm actually super psyched to try this it will actually fix a problem I'm haveing.

The sensor on the WiiMote is sensitive to light, the sensor bar is using infrared light. This is why Nintendo recommends to have little sources of light that could get in the way of the WiiMote's tracking.

The gamepad also has sensor bar (by the camera) I've done this when I've had a broken sensor bar (I hate the long skinny cable for sensor bar) with my wiis when i was at home or at my younger twins house Ps i dont play wii games anymore Heck even games for that matter But my wii is not going to waste as i use it as my youtube downloader and torrent box I downloaded Demi Lovato's songs consistantly on my wii (rvl 001) I love me onwards using hbc libogc app or linux lately (wii-linux-ngx) with mono (run .NET apps on linux or mac or windows) using a custom downloader gui in browser i made Uses libvideo on nuget I am a c# programmer
