今作よりMVSシステム用として登場した「ソニックウイングス」シリーズの第2弾。縦スクロールタイプのシューティング作品でありながら、MVSシステムのモニター制限により縦画面から横画面に変更になり、当初はとても違和感があった。操作は前作と同様自機の移動に8方向レバー、ショットと特殊ウエポンの発射に2つのボタンを使用する。また、プレイヤーの機体数が、前作の4ヶ国4機体から5ヶ国8機体と大幅に増えている。全10ステージ。ロケテスト段階では前作と同じく縦画面方式であった。
ストーリー:
かつて世界の破壊を目論んだ謎の組織は、８人の戦士の活躍によって壊滅した。しかしその２年後、強力な軍隊が突如出現！世界各地を次々と占領していった。そして、その軍隊は２年前に各地を襲った軍隊が使用していた超兵器を装備していた。…謎の組織は壊滅していなかったのだ。国連から依頼を受けた国際秘密救助隊のリヴァー・Ｎ・ホワイト隊長は、組織の撃滅を指令。そしてここに平和を取り戻すために戦士達が集結したのである。

The first sequel to the superb vertically scrolling shoot-em-up "Aero Fighters", players once again take control of a Jet fighter aircraft and take to the skies to destroy enemy jets, boats, helicopters, gun emplacements and huge end-of-level bosses. The graphics are every bit as accomplished as those of the prequel and the game delivers a good level of challenge.
The end-of-level bosses change from game-to-game; a nice touch that adds variety to an already solid game.
Players can choose to play as any one of eight different fighter pilots, each of which pilots a different jet :
* American F-117A Nighthawk piloted by Robo-Keaton.
* American A-10 Thunderbolt II piloted by Mao Mao.
* Japanese Fighter-Support X piloted by Hien.
* Japanese F-15 Eagle piloted by Captain Silver.
* International F-14 Tomcat piloted by Cindy and Ellen.
* International YF-23 Black Widow II piloted by Spanky.
* French Rafale piloted by Steve.
* British Sea Harrier FRS2 piloted by Bobby.

I love SW series, specially the 2nd one. I like the strategies used by the player, always thought the Rafale was a weak choice but he put it to good use. And the deaths bring a human touch to the playthrough. Bravo!

I love the sequel too since it's the only game in which you can mix up a diverse variety of character conversations and endings. Since other installments only allows characters of the same country or column if they are not of the same country representing with during 2P modes.

@@jackfrost0331 yeah, for SW3 it was really a drawback. And in SW Special (PS1/Saturn), you can mix pilots only after defeating the game with all chars and planes, but without dialog between them. Considering the European version has no save feature, it's basically an impossible task. Bad localization work.

Aside from the A-10 the Rafale does the 2nd highest DPS out of all the fighters, the harrier's missiles are individually stronger, but Rafale makes up for the lack of power with quantity and rate of fire. At point blank range it's very apparent

Is there a valid reason why they made that character Anjera into "Steve"? Certain endings in Aero Fighters 2 reveal the truth.

Seems to me the only conclusion is that Angela's consistency is that of her crossdressing nature in the western version. Steve/Angela is quite effeminate in both personality and appearance that's why in certain endings her clothes are either charred to view her original appearance, or just downright annoying Silver, Hien, or Spanky/Whity. There are but a few characters who she gets along with, like Ellen & Cincia/Cindy. Her western persona of Steve and her liking to punk rock almost thought of some coincidence with the artists of that Era, while Angela portrays differently in sense of style and music.
