If you've been watching until now, you know I've been working on making a replica of the journal from the 2004 film 'The Notebook'. In Part 1 I planned out the the book, sewed and trimmed the text block, and rough cut the boards. In Part 2 I finished the text block by adding the ribbon and lining the spine, as well as assembled the case and covered it with book cloth. In this third and final video I will tool in the decorative borders on the front and back covers, pare the leather corner tips and apply them, then glue the book into its cover. You can judge for yourself if my replica could stand in for the hero prop from the film - let me know in the comments what you think!
In case you missed the first two videos:
Part One: • Replicating 'The Noteb...
Part Two: • Replicating 'The Noteb...
Chapter timestamps:
Making the Tooling Template: 1:01
Tooling the Decorative Borders: 2:46
Laying out the Leather Corners: 7:22
Paring the Leather: 9:22
Applying the Leather Corners: 11:55
Final Prep: 17:51
Casing In: 19:31
The Reveal!: 22:44
If you enjoyed this video please consider subscribing to the channel and activating your notifications for future installments. If there are other movie books you'd like me to re-create, let me know in the comments! I have a few in mind but I'm sure there are more, and if this video proves popular I might make it into a full Book-Prop Reproduction series.
As always, thanks for watching!

I love watching you work..a true craftsman. I'm curious why you applied the glue to the paper rather than the cover with putting it together.
@FourKeysBookArts
@FourKeysBookArts 2 жыл бұрын
Gluing out the paper ensures the adhesive has full coverage and that it goes only where it needs to be. Applying it to the cover would be almost impossible to keep neat around the edges. Also, the paper stretches a bit when wet, then contracts again as it dries, which tends to pull the covers in towards the book. Doing the opposite could warp the boards outward. Thanks for the question!

Great job! I enjoyed quite a lot this project. Just a question. Shouldn't the blotting and the barrier paper be placed in reverse order? Regards
@FourKeysBookArts
@FourKeysBookArts 3 жыл бұрын
A valid observation. I am using the barrier paper to both reduce moisture transfer as well as a release paper should there be any excess glue squeeze out. It's not entirely moisture-proof anyway, so the blotter paper absorbs any excess moisture that creeps through the barrier paper. If I put the blotter directly against the pastedown there's a chance it could get glued firmly into the book, which would be a mess. A perfect solution I suppose would be a release paper against the pastedown, then a blotting paper, and then another moisture barrier against the book. But too much stuff under the cover in the press can strain the spine, so it's a balancing act really. Thanks for the great question!

Wonderful stuff as ever - I've never come across anything like that ebony folder, if there is anything you could add about it, I'd be most grateful. I might try making one from boxwood, but is there any reason that you didn't use one of your brass tools? Cheers!
@FourKeysBookArts
@FourKeysBookArts 3 жыл бұрын
Like so many of my tools I made the ebony folder myself. I went with that mainly because of the width of line it made, and the very gentle curve of the working end, which helped to avoid digging in to the cloth. I made a total of three of these notebook replicas and used the ebony folder to do all the tooling, and it held up exceptionally well. I did try my brass tool in my early tests but the line was a bit too wide, and it did seem to dig in, to disastrous results. Boxwood would likely be a good option for such a tool, as my understanding that boxwood is quite dense. Thank you for the great question!

how did you come about using flour paste as glue?
