In this video I am raking out and repointing the brickwork with an electric mortars gun. Unfortunately my hoover broke so I couldn’t use that and it was a little dusty.

@@undercrackers56 If you read the destription, it specifically states that his vacuum broke, so that is why he did not use one. He probably does not have a spare one laying around. Definitly sucks for the neighbours though.

If any would-be pointers require reliable technical guidance on repointing, do take the trouble to read the Building Research Establishment publication “Good Repair Guide No 24” (Repointing external brickwork walls) as this provides authourative information, including clarifying suitable mortar mixes, warnings of when worn pointing affects structural integrity and the importance of using lime pointing on old solid walls. Its only about 10 squid!

It depends on the weather. I joint up just before it starts to go hard.

By yourself and industrial vac and dust collector almost zero dust. I do believe your current method of grinding out pointing is now illegal in the UK

I have one and can’t seem to get the mix right? We are using 3 soft, 2 plasters sand and 1 cement and febmix. Any suggestions please.

Just use plaster sand and cement I make it a almost creamy mix

Depends if the bricks are soft then a softer mix but a 3:1 mix if they are hard bricks

You have to add a plastisizer (spelling?) and I mix it a little thicker since the gun mixes air in making it very liquidy.

Maybe have a read of Building Research Establishment publication “Good Repair Guide No 24” (Repointing external brickwork walls). One of the key pieces of advice is that the mortar has to be compressed onto the joints. It also gives the correct mortar mixes.

You know you could put a vacuum tube on that grinder? That new pointing can’t be more than a quarter of an inch deep after bucket handling over such a shallow grind out.

50 years being a bricklayer keep the Marshaltown jointer. Flat to the brickwork not at an angle. I had to fill the joints myself by hand. how things progress..I am retired.. I do miss it....

Good video, I’ve got the same gun. You don’t see many with them. You don’t trowel the excess off the bed joints first to save on waste? Looks good nevertheless. Also on the grinding out the dust extraction unit has paid me dividends in time spent cleaning up, & washer machines 🤣

Creative BRickwork does not even know what lowercase BRickwork is. True story.......Great technique all day long.....Wearing plastic gloves is a must. There is no question about it. I wish I did it way sooner the work is great...very fulfilling and the profit margin is unlike ANY other form of construction I have ever seen period. $1,577 for a set of stairs. I have a 1 day process that I demo damage only, high end brick cleaning, spot point, most of time i have time to give walkway a pressure wash as well.....This is done using on average 1/3 bag mortar, $10 soap,$10 polymer,$400 pressure washer has paid for itself 10x over in the first couple months.....Now I have fixed churches and fixing more for free with the help of others eagle scouts etc.......makes a huge difference in some of these areas. ........................ the market is there like no other, there is no other type of business of swinging a hammer that has profit margins on that level the risk is so low the rewar is high....the customer loves it all day long...nobody is mad when you knock as you dont knock unless the stairs need some love...they have know for years...... If its possible be a BRickie....I changed my name to BRick as I am all in.......Creative BRickwork is amongst the best clearly. Master mason for certain..

Did that wall need repointing? Sand and cement should give you 100 years unless you are on a hill top or on the coast.

Do you mean "Struck and Cut" pointing? Like "Weather" pointing but the bottom of the bed joints lap over the top of the bricks below and on the perp joints it overlaps the end of the brick opposite the struck side? It is mostly done on very old brick walls where the bricks have no clearly defined edges.

I used the faithful before the electric gun for years but my wrists are killing me now from using the pump guns and bricklaying. I get so many repointing jobs and the electric gun has paid for itself.

Do you grind out all the mortar or just cut a line down the middle. Seems like you would shave the brick making joint bigger trying to clean it up.

Grind out between 20/25mm deep and grind out as much as possible

you need the Irwin mortar rake connected to a henry, no dust/ no cutting into bricks on the vertical cuts and uniform depth, grinders are useless for this work

Great job! I like to fill the vertical joints first then the cross joints. But everyone has there own way right.

I was taught to fill purps up first then the bed joints. However with this gun i found it better the other way round.

To be fair it is heavy and it builds the biceps up 😆 but it is a brilliant tool fast and fills the joints up just how it should be done. I used to use a pump gun but with that and bricklaying my wrists couldn’t take it anymore so the quick point gun is a good investment and an absolute asset to me.

It’s only a wash down and not constant water going on it. So it fine and nothing to worry about.

I have a two story, circa 1900 brick building, soft lime based mortar, and am having it repointed. The mason wants to start at the top and work downward. My intuition is to do the opposite and start at the bottom and work up. Opinion? Thanks.

@@creativebrickwork3349 Thank you. I am more concerned with incrementally adding more weight from the new mortar above on the lower bricks that have weakened mortar, often a reason for lower mortar deterioration to begin with. If this is not likely the case, I am good with top to bottom.

Top to bottom will be cleaner finish as any drop would cleared up.

Ensure that your mason repoints using lime. Cement pointing will simply trap moisture and ruin your brick

It depends on how soft or hard the bricks are but for this job it was a 3:1 mix.

This property is close to the sea front and gets all the weather. The joint were eroding and was letting damp in. So repointing was the action taken with with water sealant over the whole wall to prevent any more damp from coming through.

Hoover broke that morning and the window was being replaced a couple of days after repointing so there was no worries about staining the window.

You just brought the blue hopper? I brought the hopper and drill as the hopper bolts on that drill so it’s a more solid fix. Let me know how you get on with it.

Great work but get a 3M versaflow or atleast use a vacuum attachment. for dust collection. N95 will not considerably protect against silica dust that are very tiny.

My hoover broke that morning so I have invested in the top of the range hoover that’s designed especially for raking out mortar joints. I will do a video when I next use it.

Nice work. I have tried a hand squeeze mortar bag but could never het the mortar mixture and consistency just right where it wouldn’t stop up the tip. I have never seen an electric mortar gun like that. Can you tell me what the mortar mixture you are using? Thanks, Tom

For this type of brick I used a 3-1 sand and cement mix and made it creamy.
