Changing will to would isn't changing it one step to the past. Rather, it is a hypothetical situation that has not yet occurred. AKA CONDITIONAL... DUH!!!!

You are correct that we use "would" in the second conditional but this is not a conditional, there is no if clause. This is called reported speech. You are talking about (reporting) a past statement, so you have to shift the verbs in the original staement to the past as well. Will is the verb in the future tense, would is the past tense of will.

Ha ha, yeah, the verb "live" is probably not the best example as far as the actual meaning of the examples goes. But for the purpose of explaining reported speech, it's as usable as most verbs. As long as you get the usage of reported speech, that's what matters!
