Critical Duty looks like a great choice for PCCs to avoid the usual problems of overexpansion/fragmentation and shallow penetration from pushing bullets much faster than they were designed for. They also work great out of shorter barrels, which could simplify logistics for someone who runs barrels of both lengths.

I used to load all my pistols with CD 135s until I saw a couple of gel tests where they didn't expand when shot out of compact pistols. Every test I saw of the HSTs was great, short or long barrel. So I bought a bunch of HSTs from SGAmmo when you could get 50rd boxes for a little over $25 a box. Use them in my short barrels; use the CDs in long barrels.

My sources in law enforcement stated that the 124 grain 9 mm +P is the favorite load of many agencies which use 9 mm carbines and pistols. There are some 9mm carbines(such as the Ruger PC Carbine) that fail to gain any appreciable velocity from the heavier bullets(like the 147gr.) The ordinary Federal 9BP(115gr Hi-Shok) could have some interesting results when fired from a carbine. From the longer barrel it should boost the bullet to near +P+ velocity. Which just might result in it performing like the classic 9BPLE which was known for having great stopping power. The 9BPLE was a classic manstopper from a handgun. That +P+ bullet hit pretty hard, had some fragmentation, decent expansion, and adequate penetration. Though from a carbine it might be moving too fast. Resulting in it falling apart as you observed. Perhaps the standard pressure Federal 9BP(115gr Hi-Shok) fired from a carbine might achieve similar results to the 9BPLE from a handgun. All with potentially less recoil, muzzle blast, and wear and tear on the carbine. Though only an actual test would determine how that bullet would truly perform.

@cgsimons118710 ай бұрын
Interesting results. The Henry Homesteader may have something in common with the Ruger PC Carbine. I know with the Ruger PC Carbine that the lighter(115gr and 124gr) bullets tend to get more significant gains in velocity. The heavy 147gr bullet from that carbine has nearly the same velocity achieved through a full-size handgun. The 135gr bullet is an unusual weight. So, it might stand to reason that this bullet will gain some velocity over the 147gr bullet, but less than the 124gr. I like the results of the 124gr in this test. While both bullets expand the same, the 124gr has a bit more energy(similar to .357 Mag with a 3" barrel) and reaches the upper limits of ideal penetration in a defensive load.

Looks like these 9mm loads don't quite match the velocities I'd expect from a .38 Super pistol. But, they performed really well. Penetration was great. Thanks.

I like the 124 and the extra velocity and maybe a tiny bit more disruption.. I don't usually use that stuff in handguns but if I get a carbine I'll probably either run those or 147 grain HST's

Which I have been thinking about getting a 8" MP5 clone so that would probably be a great option.. I think the 147 grain HST would work great out of a longer barrel too

That would be a decent round for a youngin' to start out close deer hunting with. Hell, I'd use in the home for self defense. Thanks for another great review Brian!

Pretty much zero recoil too.😎👊

I'd like to use a suppressed 6.5" 9mm CMMG Dissent for home defense, but really struggling to pick a good load. With the way my house is laid out I'm particularly concerned with over penetration. I don't think these critical duty's are the right load, they're designed to penetrate barriers. But as you said I think the critical defense's are maybe too light for a 6.5" barrel and will just rip themselves apart and not perform as designed. I do really like the polymer insert that Hornady uses, but it seems like plenty of rounds without it have near perfect records of not clogging. The best two I'm seeing are the Defiant 135gr TCX-S and the Federal 147gr HST. Subsonic is not a requirement, but my intuition is the heavier slower moving rounds are more likely to dump their energy and not over penetrate. Wondering if you have any advice? I'm leaning towards the Defiant's except they're a lot less proven than the HST's. I have not watched all of your videos (yet!), I know there are other copper ones you like as well. Hoping you can point me in the right direction. Cheers.

Love the Cleetus hat! Have one of my own.

Not enough expansion for me but the penetration is VERY good. Me likey that and the muzzle energy is very nice for 9mm considering. Makes me shudder to think what Federal HST or V-crown might be able to do out of a 16 inch barrel!

Glad to see this! Looks like this combination of ammo and barrel length gets 9mm up to.357 magnum out of a 4 inch. Would like to see that new CCI uppercut out of a rifle. Can’t believe such a good company could blow it like they did calling that a pistol-specific round. I think it might be good in a rifle!

I run gold dots from my PCC, but a pistol length barrel.

Gold Dots can seriously expand when the velocity is boosted from a longer barrel. Sometimes even too big.
@jcnikoley10 ай бұрын
@@cgsimons1187 As I said, it's a short pistol barrel.
