Today we take a look at repotting Drosera capensis sundews basically because I forgot to water them and over 90% dried up! So in order to save the few remaining ones I'm doing a repot, and we also discuss all the Drosera capensis care requirements while we're at it. Other sundews we look at today include Drosera dichotoma giant and Drosera binata var. multifida, both of which are currently looking great!

I feel you're underestimating how hardy these capes can be. Even if the growth is completely dead the plants roots refuse to die and in my experience decide to make several more small plants in response.

That hanging drosera is stunning 😍I have a very small pot of drosera adelae that has made babies like crazy, but I think they're crowding each other out, limiting their size. After watching this video I feel less scared to separate and repot them. Thanks!

I really want to get some carnivorous plants, the one you have with the pink flowers in the middle looks really nice. Do any others get flowers? Also I like the vlog chore type videos as well as the others, I think it’s nice to have a good mix of content 👍

I think you're referring to the Pinguiculas. Many carnivorous plants have unusual flowers on them. All Drosera (sundews) flower. Venus Fly Traps flower as do Sarracenia. My favourite flowers are on Heliamphoras - although I've never actually got around to growing one yet.

At least I've got some other pots as insurance - and they're self-seeding around the place too. I've never tried utricularia as yet. I want to try heliamphora first - whenever I get around to it!

I once forgot to check my filter and I ended up watering my Drosera capensis with higher and higher concentrations of TDS. I almost lost my whole tray. So I did a flushing with each pot with distilled water. Now, they’re coming back like seedlings!! Almost lost them all! :)

sorry but i dont know your name pal - a smashing video on sundews, thankyou. They seem to be pretty hardy (mine grow in Scotland - even further north than you sound to be?) Take care friend, and i hope your plants survive.

Thanks Bernard. They bounced back fortunately. I've several self-seeded Drosera capensis too so I think I'll be OK for stock (providing I don't let them dry out again!🤣)

It's going to be a big difference when I start to try to grow these The reason I say that is because most of my plants are also from the cape region in Africa but I have plants from Namaqualand mostly succulents and cacti. I have this Elephant bush that is absolutely beautiful. I was thinking of trying to grow some napenthes pitcher plants, But I'm not sure!🤔

I think they’ll fit in just fine providing you don’t have your humidity below 35% for any considerable length of time.
@Joey-vw1id
@Joey-vw1id 2 жыл бұрын
@@Grow_Up_Man55 that's another thing I was wondering because my plants don't need too much humidity. I do mimic the morning dew though because I'm sure that's how it is in Africa!
@Grow_Up_Man55

@@Joey-vw1id It's only extremely low humidity that would cause issues.

My first sundew, a capensis was attacked by aphids, wasn't even that many, maybe thrips as well. It's on life support and it's not looking good, so I am anxious to put them outside.
@Grow_Up_Man55

Spray it soft soap solution - that should sort the aphids out. They like a sunny spot though which will definitely help.

Just watching this again because 2 weeks ago I bought a plant clump that has 2 plants from a grower. I’ve let it be to acclimate. Geez those roots are long, will go look for a tall pot. Found this very helpful…but being me I would’ve tried to save anything with green on it! Thanks 🪴😊

@@Grow_Up_Man55 oh no been living plants since childhood, taught by my Granny….always learning! Why I love plants so much, always something to learn. I do have both distilled and rain water. I prefer rain, especially in my area of central NJ there seems to be an issue with the supply of distilled water. Thanks for reply, hope you are doing well! Judi 🌿

I would think it'll be fine! It's surprising how often a repot can revive an ailing plant. I might get one to deal with fungus gnats! 🤣

Yeah they're very robust little things - and they were crowded in that pot anyway. You should get some seeds - they're much better to look at in real life than on video!

Apparently Colocasia need 21 degrees at least so maybe similar for Alocasia? The corms were under a tenner each so worth a go I guess. I really love one called Colocasia Pharoah’s Mask but they’re at least £120!
