I had an issue with algae myself. It didn’t seem hat bad at first, then it exploded! Didn’t look like it affected the roots of my Phal, but I didn’t want to take the chance. Mine wasn’t on top of the pot, it was all around the bottom and took over all the moss and bark until it came to the surface! She looks so much happier now!

I had a lot of health issues and a while back my three orchids and a few other plants died because I couldn't focus on them, I think a lot of people have also been there. I hope you're feeling better.

I was wondering if the algae were of the type "blue green" (not actually algae, we just call them that, but cyanobacteria). They smell bad and, I believe, can be quite poisonous...

Just wanted to let you know, that I really love your videos. They are always full of useful information! I used your spider mites solution on some affected philodendrons and calatheas and it looks like the mites dropped dead! Moreover, you're pretty much the only one who has done a care guide for terrestrial orchids - and thank you for that! I wouldn't know how to care for my terristrial orchids if it wasn't for you!

Hi there! Any updates? I appreciate your videos. I have a Macodes Petola and so far so good :)How/How often do you fertilize your orchids? What do you recommend for the Macodes ? Thank you!!

Have you considered trying "Akadama as a top dressing for your jewel orchids? I mean they're used by most bonsai growers? maybe a 3-6mm type? any thoughts?

Will roots grow well where the bark is as easily as it does on the moss?

Hi! I just received the macodes petoal in the mail. In moss, the leaves are curled. What would you suggest I do with it first? thanks, your videos have helped me so much!

Hi Dani. Thanks for all the great information about orchids. I am new to growing. I killed my first orchid a few months ago with crown and root rot. :( because I did everything wrong. Anyway I now have 9 phalaenopsis, 2 minis phals and one miltoniopsis. All of them seem to be doing really well actually except 2...so on to my 2 questions. 1. One of my mini phalaenopsis (both were bought at same time from same place) seems to be unhappy for whatever reason. She has less roots than the other and is dehydrated. I cannot seem to find a balance for her. Some of the roots have desiccated while others have rotted. I recently resituated her in the pot - again, but I fear she may die before I figure out the problem. Maybe I am fussing over her too much and should just leave her alone but I dont think that is the answer. She does have a new leaf that seems to be growing which I think is a good sign but if the rooting continues the way it has I imagine the new leaf wont matter much if there is lack of nutrients. If one is healthy and the other is not but it seems the conditions are exactly the same where should my troubleshooting extend to next? 2. One of my regular phalaenopsis (I think it is a regular one anyway) has leaves that have a very different texture than the others. They feel almost like smooth soft rubber slightly spongy but not squishy. The others are firm and rigid. (Except the mini phal I talked about from above whose leaves are wrinkled and leathery). Should I be concerned about this. I think it's probably okay.

A couple of ?’s. You are always stressing about the cleanliness of each orchid but you were not sterilizing in between each orchid you repotted. Just checking to see what you’re thinking and you didn’t spray peroxide. I’m asking because I got 3 seedlings about that size and I don’t want to kill them. You’re the best Danni

Hi, I am sterilizing, I just do it off camera, or I edit out the footage in post. Some things are just not filmed as the videos would go on forever :)))

I just bought a Macodes Petola straight from a nursery, I mean I actually went to the nursery in person. I recently discovered that there is one near me, I just had to go and check it out. But now that I'm watching this video I'm a bit surprised. Simply because all of the Macodes at the nursery where in a green colored medium. I thought that was supposed to be that way. In fact the one I have is laying in something dark green colored, and now your saying this is algae and that's it's bad? It's also not just a little bit green but like all green.

Hello from Virginia, USA! What about your carnivorous plant in the contiguously wet sphagnum moss? Mine is getting algae on the top and I have a baby coming up too so I don't want to kill it :(

Hi, they grow usually larger than the surface of the pot and completely shade it, no algae issues with them :)

I could use advice on jewel orchid seedlings if anyone knows about them please
@ilonacheshire32154 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this really helpful video! I've been searching KZbin for advice today as the little macodes petola that I bought just before lockdown started (in the UK) started to droop badly two nights ago and I'm desperately trying to revive her. I have been keeping her on a bed of clay pebbles and in a tall (10") glass jar, usually with the top covered for most of the day and I mist / spray inside the jar weekly, however, I noticed that the base of the stem looks like the algae affected example here. The sphagnum moss is very dry though and the pot is tiny. I don't know when I'll be able to access fresh moss, etc, (hopefully I can order some online) is there anything that I can do to save her straight away please? I've never had an orchid before and this little beauty is incredibly hard to get hold of in London so any advice would be much appreciated! Thank you

Para evitar isso..todas as minhas orquídeas jóias estão plantadas em orquidpon da Lechuza e lavei as raízes antes de plantar no potinho com furo embaixo. Estão lindas! 🌵🇧🇷🇵🇹.

Hi Dani I have a question what type of bark do you use your pieces look small my bark I received even from repot me seems bigger and do you soak it for a period of time?
@MissOrchidGirl5 жыл бұрын
Hi, in this video I use small grade fir bark, but the orchiata bark from repotme is superior and also comes in different sizes, here is me trying out their Oncidium mix which is smaller kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIqcZoOBqdp0brs

I just planted Drocera seeds in sphagnum moss. Was that a bad idea? I don't know how long they will take to germinate. Will the alge take over before the plants can grow?
@barbfroede13435 жыл бұрын
Danni, quick question- When re-potting a phal and inspecting the root system, I have had a few roots that are mushy near the base of the plant, but further down the root, it’s firm and vibrant green. Should that root be removed or left to supply nutrients to the plant? Silly to many, I’m sure, but I’m very new to this hobby and wonder what your thoughts are on this matter. Thank you
@debradaugherty82874 жыл бұрын
Absolutely remove rotten material. Perhaps you can scrape off the rotten part and leave the rest? Otherwise, you could cut it entirely, dip in rooting hormone, and place the stem in a cup of water to root it or wrap the stem in moist spaghnum moss to root it. When you have a bit of root, pot it up as shown.
