I have waited for this update for so long and you know what? I loved every minute of it!!! It's so relieving to see the realities being a big bumbly human around these sometimes delicate, beautiful plants. You're doing great Dani! Thank you for your videos! You inspire a lot of people. Oh, no! The vanilla... I did the same mistake a few months ago. It had a big(-ish) rootball, and it attached to the stem with just one little string of root. I was devastetad. I had to change the coco-rod, because it was too short. I changed from half a meter to a 120 cm thing. Then the root broke off. So I laid down the bottom parts of the stem in top of the soil, and it rooted easily. (I use the standard-shop-bought terrestrial orchid mix with the vanilla.) They are pretty vigorous little plants, I have to say. Now my vanilla looks so good, but a little short compared to the new rod. Hopefully, it will grow much bigger. :) That was definitely a clumsy day for me. Those days you can drink half a swimmingpool of coffee, but the clumsyness will stay all day. So chin up, and good luck with the new roots!

Is that vanilla plant hard or easy to grow
@brokenkeys11126 жыл бұрын
I once had a day where I was watering my Psychopsis and it was mounted but now it isn’t and it fell, in the end I broke the growing nodes on the spike so I had to sit two and a half months for it to choose the nodes it is going to branch out and bloom.

How would a vanilla do if I mounted cork panels to the wall and trained it across horizontally once it reached the max height of whatever plant pole I can find available around here? Do you think it would tolerate the cork alright or would it need the coir on that section too? Or does it not tolerate the horizontal growth at all?

Hey Danny can I just use aquarium water to fertilize my orchids or should I use regular orchid fertilizer
@Rockdoc21746 жыл бұрын
I use water from my aquaria but I still use fertiliser because I don’t know that the water contains everything the plants need. The water seems to work well. It’s at or above room temperature, any chlorine or chloramine has been removed and it will have some nitrates.
@karisanchez7626 жыл бұрын
Not all orchids appreciate Urea so you have an overcrowded aquarium or take longer between water changes and tank cleanings than recommended (no judgement, we all have bad days when we don’t just get through everything we want to get done) then it may be irritating to those orchids. I know phals and phal-hybrids are among those that don’t tolerate it well but I’m not sure on others since I am fairly new to orchids. It may not be an obvious reaction from one watering like a yellow spot on your lawn after a dog has marked his territory there but eventually cumulative so if it’s one of those that dislikes urea, it will just kind of fail to thrive and slowly become more sickly, especially the roots. I know other plants (most regular outdoor garden plants) either don’t mind or even thrive with aquarium water. My aloe plant? Gigantic! Succulents? Taking over faster than I can keep them tidied up. Giant King Tut papyrus? Still lush and green even after a scorching summer. Dwarf fruit trees? They love it! Mint? Growing like a weed. Blue fescue? Doing great. Bougainvillea? I’m the only one who can keep one alive in our area (poor soil quality that no amount of additives seems to fix) and nobody believes that all I do differently is water it and the rest of our tiny yard with used fish tank water. Double check in regard to your specific types of orchids and if in doubt, you can use it outside in a garden.

The vanilla is flexable in moon stages. Mess with it when the leaves will bend when lightly bent..
@karisanchez7626 жыл бұрын
On another note: how would it do in a bathroom? Either in a shower at the far end and being misted/watered daily by the overspray from when someone takes a shower or alternatively, right outside of it but as it reaches the top of the shower door, having the upper section trained horizontally around the upper edge of the shower? Or is this too much humidity and moisture altogether? (I live in an area of California that, while not desert, is not humid either if that helps)

Hi Danny. Haha. Isnt a lack of coffee, is too much coffee. Let the coffee pass thru watch a soap opera rerun and back to work. New equipment is made not to last, ain't your fault. Buy antiques when possible and read comments for gathering field experience. I read consumer reports to see what lasts the longest. Otherwise you're perfect, life's perfect bc you're here and we're here. I know... Sounds like a hallmark card. Look at the Brighter side... Monty Python ?

Hi Danny! Have you come to any consensus about the best media mix for your vanilla orchid?
@paulmorris58596 жыл бұрын
Plant on compost. Not in anything. On top You will need a big pot and a 6 feet trellis. Put bark on to of the soil so the vine wont touch the soil. That orchid will grow 30 feet. old roos will die like amy orchid. Let the vine grow back to the ground and it will grow new roots and regenerate. hugs

@etanaf6 жыл бұрын
Yes Dani, where / how did you find and assemble your DIY pots so they fit so well? The ones I find don't have a 1-1.5 inch gap at the bottom for the water, or they don't fit tightly at the top. I'll keep looking. But I'd love a video about how you found this new set up.

How come you don't use a ceramic pot? I find the heavier pots help keep my taller plants from tumbling over.

Do you have any updates on your vanilla orchid since this? I just repotted my 2 1/2 year old vanilla vine and I narrowly avoided removing all of the roots from my previous heavy mineral media. It was growing like gangbusters in a mixture of pumice, vermiculite, and pine bark and I just transplanted it with all of the old soil into a two layer pot (5 gallon cloth pot and 8 gallon nursery pot) the likes I've used for orchids before. I'm using a lot of sphagnum, pine bark, and old soil in the pot, with a rod wrapped in cotton and sphagnum. I stuck the old post directly next to the new post, since there are a lot of aerial roots growing into the old post!!!

Don't worry Danni, it just proves you're human :D hehe I think you did the right thing though by not doing too much the rest of the day. Whenever I have days like that, I look at it as a sign that I need to just stop, take a breath... etc.

How much water does the vanilla orchid need
@mandanadehghanian33576 жыл бұрын
Hi Dani (spelling?): there is very little information on the internet about dendrobium auriculatum. Do you have one? I ordered one online, and it was supposed to “bloom all year”. I’ve had it for two months, and it’s not doing much. It’s ok but I don’t know much about it. Does it need winter rest? What’s it’s bloom cycle? I’d be grateful if you could share what you know. Thanks so much. M.
