I've gotten quite a few comments about this and realize I should have specified it in the video, but Blue was legally captured in the Florida Everglades, where tegus are a hugely destructive invasive species. He was NOT taken from his natural habitat, and had I not kept him he would legally have had to be euthanized.

AfroHerpkeeper can I house a crested gecko in a 12 x 12 x 18 for its whole life? Or is an 18 x 18 x 24 better?
@AfroHerpkeeper

I'd go with the 24 high. An 18 high could work fine but there isn't much space for an adult crestie to jump around, and they do that quite a bit

I'm sure there's a difference in the proteins composing different species' venom, but I think they're mostly equal in their effect. David, Blue was caught in the Florida Everglades

Great video! I just wanted to say that I love how your room tours are not just about showing off. You add little tidbits of information and interesting facts that make them so interesting! (And important for educating people who may be afraid, or who may not be familiar with certain species) your videos are very inspiring to me! Great work. :) P.S. your intro song is sooo catchy. It gets stuck in my head. I love it lol.

when i was 4 i started begging my parents for a dog then one day i got home and there was a weird thing in a tank and i was like "dafuq is that" [paraphrased] and my brother who saw it for the first time when i did was like "yo mama bought a fucking dino" [paraphrased] and i was so scared i started screaming and crying like "MAMA Y WOULD U BUY A DINO IT COULD MURDER ME U BITCH" [again paraphrased] and my dad walked out and said "i bought u a dog!" [not paraphrased] and i genuinely believed that the tegu my parents bought was a weird dog breed for like a year my parents were to scared to tell me the truth bc of how scared i was of the idea of owning a reptile

I know you're mainly a reptile owner, so it makes perfect sense that your rat isn't up to minimum requirements. First off, the levels on the cage need to be covered with fleece, so that your rat doesn't get bumblefoot. Second, rats NEED a cagemate, and I can't stress this enough! they simply get bored, and acquire numerous ailments from living in solitude. Rats can fairly easily be introduced to new rats. Third, rats need a diet that consists of fresh fruits, veggies, healthy grains (such as a small bit of pasta), possibly even dairy, and meat if your willing, but no fatty foods. Fourth, whatever brand ur feeding, I'm pretty positive it's not Oxbow, and I highly recommend oxbow, wait is all natural, and provides your rats with their basic nutritional needs.
@Emma-xh6ni
@Emma-xh6ni 7 жыл бұрын
sry, I should clarify, as you did say she gets veggies and fruits as treats, they actually need to be fed as part of the main diet. two tablespoons is pretty sufficient on the daily
@Amanda-kl2hl
@Amanda-kl2hl 7 жыл бұрын
Emma'sPets I second this. Thank you for taking her in, but Gus needs a cagemate, it's never too late to add a couple of females to her cage, as girls are very easy to introduce to one another. There are is a great number of rat rescues, and even some humane societies have them up for adoption. Rats love human companionship but nothing fills the social needs of a rat aside from a fellow rat. (the food he's feeding is oxbow, though, which is the best food available. The cage size is great, but I would add fleece to protect her feet.)
@Emma-xh6ni
@Emma-xh6ni 7 жыл бұрын
Amanda Summerfield oh thx, for some reason it looked like dog kibble at that time, even though I fed my rats oxbow too lol! I'm glad someone else agrees, I was surprised about the lack of comments regarding the fact that she was alone, and I'm glad someone agrees with me!
@AfroHerpkeeper
@AfroHerpkeeper 7 жыл бұрын
I agree with you too, and I do know a lot about caring for rats (even though I'm "mainly a reptile owner"). I'm well aware of her social requirements, but when I took her in it was unexpected (she had been living in a hamster cage) and up until recently I haven't been able to look into cagemates. Most likely I'll be rehoming her to someone with an established colony, but otherwise I'm planning to find another senior female.

Hey dude, incredible collection! But some must need for your beautiful rat. Rats must always have a another rat with them, always. They can die from depression within a few months of being solitary. And having open wire flooring will cause bumble foot, an intense swelling due to skin being caught on mesh. So I do hope you improve her cage by getting her a girl buddy, and cover up her upper floors with fleece or cardboard. And i'm definitely subscribing!

AfroHerpkeeper would the size you have be good enough for a tegu at full size? and would it work for a bearded dragon? doesnt look like theres much of a spot for a basking bulb
@AfroHerpkeeper
@AfroHerpkeeper 7 жыл бұрын
There wasn't a basking bulb in there when this was filmed, but I do have one in there right now. It has to be low wattage since there isn't too much ventilation to begin with. I'll be getting a larger enclosure for Blue when he's older, but that said, I think it'd work great for a beardie if you can rig the lights properly!

The Tegu needs a bigger cage, and they aren't as smart as monitor lizards. I've had much experience with both. Monitors while more defensive are on another level as far as intelligence. If its a male he will easily double in size. I hope you have plans for a bigger setup. Not trying to talk shit or anything, Ive just seen far too many people who dont know about them and I like to keep people informed.

I live in Florida and I wanted to let you know it is illegal to keep Florida species of reptiles(probably other animals too), with that being said there is nothing wrong with keeping invasive species, I fact, I've heard it's even encouraged. I enjoyed your room update but I was wondering where the bull snake is(I saw it in a couple of your videos) and I was also wondering if you're aware that the tegu will require an 8'x4'x4' enclosure when it's an adult?

Mike Corbett umm that's false you can keep Florida species of animals unless your being specific to a certain one I own gulf coast box turtles and a five lined skink which are native and I plan to pick up a Florida box turtle for breeding as the law states only 2 Florida box turtles may be kept without a permit but hybrids are okay and I also plan to breed and work with eastern couchwhips

@ethan2152
@ethan2152 7 жыл бұрын
Mike Corbett yes there's protected ones like the Florida box turtle you can't collect out of its natural habitat but there's only a few species of animals you can't catch from the wild invasive animals (there's a lot) if trapped or caught must be kept or the people will get fined even if it accidentally got inside your house you will get fined Florida is very funny with their laws and only have one page that actually keeps up to date

That's good, but I still think that you should wait. I cannot tell you what to do, but that's my opinion. But if your family agree and if your parents can help you, I think that ones the best reptiles for starters are bearded dragons, leopard geckos (which can live up to 20 years) or crested geckos as long as you know how to handle them. Then there is a ball python, but I think that you should get one after you have had some reptiles, because they can have problems with eating.

I always strive to maintain captive-bred animals. Of the few "wild" animals I own, the tegu and Cuban tree frog were both collected in Florida, which is not their natural habitat. They are destructive invasive species which eat native wildlife and disrupt ecosystems.

The Cuban Tree Frog, I've encountered one of these amphibians about five years ago while visiting my aunt in Florida. It was a really big one and he or she, couldn't tell the gender, was on the back of a sign right by the pool at the hotel where me and my family were staying. That was one heck of an encounter and it was sad that I didn't encounter any snakes on that trip but I did see a lot of Cuban Anole lizards and a few skinks.

I have a garter around that same size. I have been feeding it feeder fish minnows. About 6 every week. Should I Covert to 2 pinkies a week.

Cool reptile room! You mentioned you do not know blue's gender. He/She looks like a female. If it was a male. You'd probably notice large jowls developing after two years and with his/her's current size with no development of large jewels. It can be safe to say your tegu is possibly a female! I hoped this helps! Now you do truly have "Blue" from JW!

That's awesome. I really like long tailed grass lizard but I think the black and white tegu will replace it. I just love how long tail grass lizard look and react to people

I was unsure for a long time, but I can actually confirm that he's a male at this point (just hadn't grown very quickly in the wild). He flashed me the other day while pooping on my couch...

AfroHerpkeeper Oh okay haha! That would make sense as wild animals grow way shorter than CB species.

My bearded dragon doesn't have the same feeding response. She's juvenile and we've had her for a little under a month. She is fed 6-7 crickets daily and nightly (twice a day) and is kept with a litter substrate that she doesn't eat. Is there anything I should be doing differently?

Groovy tour, your Argentine Tegu is gorgeous! I wanted to ask you, what programs you are involved in locally if any reptile societies or internships? I believe we are around the same age and being a reptile enthusiast my whole life I can only come to conclude that I will most likely be going to school for zoology specializing in herpetology , I would also assume you are headed down a similar route as well?

I feed blue ground turkey, tilapia, scrambled eggs, or rodents a few times a week, and berries or other fruit as treats. Here's a link to the website for the cages: visionproducts.us/vp12wp/?page_id=18
