Really like this set up , I go for a rule by thumb if I can with smaller animals especially that the animal is capable of going from one side to the other of the enclosure without being seen. I think this also helps a animal with confidence and building a "relationship" with it. See to many decor set ups that look like the surface of mars with say a little skink in the corner terrified.
@JTBReptiles3 жыл бұрын
That's exactly the rule of thumb that I apply! A shy animal shouldn't be forced to be on display. Giving the animals that power of choice is the single most important factor in allowing them to become bold.

Excellent enclosures and excellent animal care. I didn’t have the chance to watch most of the videos until now. But I just have a question, why are you hibernating the animals for so long? Leopard geckos for example are semi tropical. If they hibernate at all, they do slow down for a few weeks. Even in the place I live, in Greece, which is mostly considered non-tropical, most reptiles don’t hibernate straight for many months in low elevations.

Hi JTB I really enjoy watching your videos. Those baby Day Geckos are SO cute. Actually all baby reptiles are cute :0). I would love to keep a pair of them. I have Leopard Geckos. An adult pair and eight of their young. I also have a male and a female Crestie. They are usually up and about around 9pm when their lights go off (all my Geckos get up and are out and about at 9pm). I see my Cresties every evening. I am also a bit of a night owl so I can see them till 2a.m. They often come out and sit and watch ME! lol. I am always surprised when keepers say they do not see their Cresties. Raised mine since they were tiny and they have always been the same. My Female is visible all day as she likes to sleep on the side glass wrapped in a Dracanea leaf which she pulls round herself like a blanket, a behavior she has had since being a hatchling.
@JTBReptiles3 жыл бұрын
I’m always in bed by 10 - perhaps you see why I don’t see my crestie much! My leopard geckos, though, are very curious and come out to see me even in the daytime, and they usually sleep out in the open, too. I’ll remember to contact you when the day geckos are ready to go if you’re still interested at the time 🙂

@@JTBReptiles My Leos are my favourites. Having them from hatchlings is rewarding. The adults were both pre-owned and took a while to settle and to "train". The babies I cold "train" from the start. Enclosures all looking great 👍. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts about running the tungsten bulbs without a dimming stat, just a cut off if it gets too warm. I’ve always thought that the lamps benefits are diminished by turning it down via a stat. My sons crestie is normally awake and looking for food by 7pm so lucky we get to see him a lot and he’s a good handler. Hopefully as the days get longer we will see him out still. Have a closer look 😉 The sphagnum moss is growing out on the background, and I have some Marcgravia in there, too. Give it a few months and it’ll have covered the background! All of these enclosures look amazing, they’re so lucky to have you. Just two questions, do you hibernate ( or what ever else it is called ) your crested gecko and day geckos. And can you do a hibernating guide for all your other reptiles like you did with your bearded dragon.
@JTBReptiles3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! No, I don’t hibernate the tropical geckos: they can’t do it; it’s not natural to them. I only hibernate my temperate species. This is why the tropical geckos are in the house rather than an unheated outbuilding 🙂 I will do hibernation videos for everything at some point, but I need to get round to it! Will probably be next winter now.

Thanks! But the question is, does he? Look at images of wild dragons, images of most captive dragons, and then look at mine. Mine is slimmer than most captives but still bigger than most wild ones. Being overweight generally has more health risks than being thin, so I’d rather him be thinner than the opposite.

I completely agree with what you said about crested geckos. I’m looking into selling mine too. I was going to sell mine in December but I decided not to and instead I upgraded her enclosure to see if she’d be more interesting to keep. Hi Loved seeing an update! The enclosures all look like they are doing well :) What size of mouse do you feed your corn snake and how often? Red looks very healthy so no judgement - I'm just really interested :)

Thanks 🙂 It was a rat pup. I feed him all sorts of things of all sorts of sizes - adult mice, pinkies, rats of various sizes, quail eggs, chicks, and so on. There’s nothing like a good bit of variety. You’re right, I chose to give him a smaller feed this time because it was his first of the year, but again I do give smaller feeds anyway just for the variety of it.

The poison dart frogs aren't a danger to the day geckos?
@JTBReptiles3 жыл бұрын
No, the frogs won’t eat the geckos and the frogs don’t develop any toxicity in captivity. It is believed that the toxicity is derived from the insects they eat in nature: the frogs don’t synthesise poisons themselves.

@JTBReptiles3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, good to hear! The leopard geckos are very much here to stay, I really like them. Unlike my crested gecko, the leos will wake up and come out when you enter the room, looking to see what you’re up to. They also sleep in the open and learn quite quickly - they’ll voluntarily climb on my hands to be let out and get all excited when they hear food coming. In short, despite being crepuscular, they’re very interactive, hence why I enjoy keeping them.
