chickens have better insolation than people can make from synthetics. I run an uninsulated shed, no lights at night, keep them from the wind and let them adjust to the real temps outside and not shock them with a greenhouse effect. The less intervention they have the better off they will be in the long run. Warm food treats once and a while help keep the sprits high, but even free range chickens will stay close to the shed on blustery days, but they head for the woods lines near fields on warmer winter days.

Thanks for the info! This is our first winter with them. Our coop is uninsulated, we do have one light out there but it’s mainly for us to see with. The problem is going to be their water. Tips??😊

@@HanbleceyaRanch Get more than one bucket and switch the buckets out when they get too iced up. Some people like the rubber pan buckets that you can flop out the ice easy and refill.

If you ever want another idea to hold the plastic from blowing, you could try one of the things we did on our hoop house. Run parachord starting on the ground level rail. Throw it over the top of the structure, and tie it off to the ground rail on the other side. It helps to secure a large area. And if you do this in every section, it eliminates most of the wind factor. Uoyr hens will be happy this winter with their new set up!
@HanbleceyaRanchАй бұрын
That’s a great idea!! I may incorporate something like that… stay tuned… thanks for the comment! 😊

@dfoltz268Ай бұрын
Looks like a smart move even if temporary! I think you will find the chickens will basically not use any of the run unless its a super nice day either way as they tend to just huddle up and stay warm when its cold. For the water we would just go out with hot water each morning and dump it in their bowl but they make water warmers that just barely keep the water from freezing you could use but being on a small solar setup even that may be more than you want.
@HanbleceyaRanchАй бұрын
@@dfoltz268 thanks!👍 We are going to be doing the hot water each morning (probably a few times a day). This being our first winter with them we are hoping all goes well!! We will also be adding more bedding as needed to keep it cozy in the coop for them! 😊
@robertbates5537Ай бұрын
I used something similar. I need to add bracing for the roof tarp and then i am going to run braces from ground to mid-point on the steel framing. I like the on flat method for the 1xs for the tarp supports. Great job. I use heavier tarps for roof and clear plastic for the sides. Because i use deep bedding method my runs stayed plenty warm for the girls last year.
@HanbleceyaRanchАй бұрын
I like the idea of running boards along the uprights, may have to look into that. We went with clear for the roof so they’d have plenty of light during the day. 😊

Consideration of using a board at both ends to keep the legs from separating due to gravity. I put mine at the base and at the top
@HanbleceyaRanchАй бұрын
I nailed the base in with 12” spikes, but I think I’m gonna add bracing near the ground to add more strength so the legs don’t blow out.
@pjv59tn51Ай бұрын
Instead of or as an addition to the tarp at the backside of the coop try putting a stack of hay /straw bales completely covering the coop wall. This adds extra insulation/protection to the coop from the wind. In the spring the bales can be used in the garden or wherever it is needed
@HanbleceyaRanchАй бұрын
Good idea but we don’t want to block the window with the snow piling up. Need ventilation!!🐓
@pjv59tn51Ай бұрын
@@HanbleceyaRanch you can build the hay/straw wall around the window. Whole homes can be built with straw as an insulation wall. I’m sure on KZbin there are videos on straw wall homes.
