Explosive performance as usual from Jack. He was such a great actor to play opposite the great detective, Jack's rather smooth demeanour added another dimension which made the clash of personalities between Jack's character and Columbo even more interesting!

John Davis Chandler reminds me so much of Steve Buscemi.

I agree with you, this incredible episode does get overlooked. One of my favorite Jack Cassidy moments is the explosive "WHAT!!?!" and I love that you included it twice in your review. You made me laugh several times!

Another great review, thanks. Jack is always strong. I also love that he doesn't attempt to alter any of his mannerisms (unlike Culp, whose murderers are all quite different in temperament), he is just Jack. I wouldn't have been surprised at the gotcha, he turned and was wearing a cape, and Columbo slaps his head and yells: "Saaantiniiii! How about that?" 😉

There's a hillarious dialogue between Greenleaf and this "madam" in the parkinglot of a bar in the valley where he dillibertly back into a innocent cople then blast both of them for his recklessness: "In your case madam I'd call a plastic surgeon" then laughs away.

You certainly wouldn’t want to kill Rock Hudson since he starred in another of the NBC Mystery Movie series McMillian and Wife, part of the anthology that included Columbo.

Thanks for another great AF review. I have watched this one a few times and usually Cassidy’s character on Columbo, “lays it on a bit thick”. It is a fast pace episode, for sure.

This IS a great plot. Less than two minutes in. Steve Busceti? Anyway...

I watched this to make sure i understood it correctly. The transcript part confused me but im pretty solid on the key gotcha. Although I'm still a bit confused how greenleaf came into possession of the key to the lock that columbo installed.

What I don't get is Eddie told Greenleaf that the door was open when Greenleaf asked if he had any trouble. So why did Greenleaf continue planting the key?
@irar46655 ай бұрын
I think its because though Greenleaf knows it was open, but COLUMBO doesnt know that- and is still looking for the guy who could have a key that got in a LOCKED door.

I've been over this episode over and over, but there's a glaring plot hole I can't reconcile. Greenleaf puts the key on Eddie's key chain, and that key ends up opening up the office door - but the locks were changed after the murder at Columbo's request. So how did Greenleaf get a copy of that key made if he was unaware Columbo changed the lock?
@irar46655 ай бұрын
Greenleaf originally had Kane plant the key that he had of the office. Turns out that this planted key was the wrong key , and that Malory had changed locks. So Greenleaf tries again:The next scene, he immediately calls a locksmith to have a key made OF THE OFFICE DOOR (theres no key duplicate- he asks the locksmith to make a key from scratch of the office door) Turns out Columbo outsmarted him , predicting that Greenleaf might try again, and Columbo had the lock on the door changed by this point!! So its clearly Greenleaf who is responsible for this new key- how (and why) could someone have a copy of a lock that Columbo himself just put on the door!

I think people just get all the Jack Cassiday Columbo episodes mixed up, since he looks and acts the same in all of them (which is great but...). And then I think the first one with JC is also about murder and book publishing, so it gets even more mixed up in memory.

I'm in the minority as this is my least favorite of the Cassidy villains. The episode was to "busy" imo to let Cassidy shine as he did in Murder by the book.

Lotsa problems with this one. What will Columbo accuse Greenleaf for? Killing the writer? Impossible: didn´t do it. Killing Eddie? Impossible: no proof, even of Greenleaf knowing where Kane lived. There´s no real case against the editor, who will walk away unscathed from the courtroom .... and Lt. C. will get a hefty rebuke from his superior!
