Some cars has weak transmissions, but bad brakes is almost always a sign of neglect. However the kid said they was living in a trailer home, so after bills and feeding 3 kids, I highly doubt the woman had much money if anything at all left over to spend in car repair. Thing is though while car repair isn't on the top of most peoples priories, it is important. A car that's not taken care of could kill you one day.

Wow, those neighbors saved those two baby girls’ lives. I wonder if they remained close with them as they got older and heard the stories of how they rescued them from a sinking car like that. Tbh, this was kind of just a freak accident. The mother should not have left the babies in a running car, but at least she admitted her mistake right away. Plus, it wasn’t like she left them in the car in a parking lot or something. It was right in their front yard and she probably just got distracted for a second. Probably what she could have done was have the son go get her whatever it was she’d forgotten. But it may have been something that he may not have been able to get on his own. She was a single mom and the only adult in the house with three children, certainly cannot be easy.

This happened about 20 minutes from my parents house less than a month before I was born. I asked my mom about it but she doesn’t remember reading or hearing anything about it. Glad those kiddos were saved and didn’t have any injuries or anything as a result. There was another similar situation many years back, maybe 6-8 years if I had to guess, where a mentally ill mother drive her minivan into the water out near Galveston. She had locked the kids in the car with her but once the water started to fill the van she bailed out and left the kids. Thankfully some bystanders, including my grandpa, saw it all happen and went to try to get the kids out. If I remember correctly they ended up either getting one of the kids to roll down a window or they broke one of the windows out and were able to get the kids out unharmed. Crazy stuff.

I know a lot of people in the late 80s, early 90s that used to do this type of stuff. It seemed to be quite common - things we would never do now was common back then. They didn't have the same knowledge. I know it must sound ridiculous, what I've just said. I was born in the early 80s, and as a small kid, I was left in the car alone by my parents or grandparents when they'd go into a store. Nothing was wrong with that practice back then. When I was 6, I was watching babies younger than me, babysitting, although adults were around but not close by. I see this type of stuff on rescue 911 quite often. Nowadays, if you leave a small kid alone in the car you could get arrested. Now it's considered dangerous.

Unfortunately we may never know why the car's transmission and brakes were bad, but they were what caused this tragedy. Brake failure alone could have caused the car to start rolling, the transmission might not have had anything to do with it unless it had been left in an incorrect position, such as neutral.

You’re all forgetting, this Took place 28 years ago when this was common practice. What I don’t understand is why the kids of today have to be mollycoddled and bubble wrapped and protected from every instance of danger. Many of us who are 25 and older were left alone in running vehicles and we learned not to touch things why can’t the kids of today learn the same things. I know that in this case it was because of mechanical failure why the car ended up in the lake. But I’m sick of all this crap that the kids of today can’t learn the same lessons that we learned 25/30 years ago, because some big shot Child professional says it’s not right.

How did the car steer left on its own? That was weird. They should have had a solid, metal fence on that one side of the pond to prevent this from happening. If the mother sent the junky car to the junkyard, how did they retrieve it? I assume they used a crane to pull it out of the water (just like what happened in one other segment where a female teenager was trying to practice driving but crashed her mother's SUV into a river). What about the items that were inside the car? Were they retrieved at all, or did they lose them after the car sank?
@billsgarage64535 жыл бұрын
Having friends in the auto salvage business my guess would be from experience with them is they used a flat bed wrecked had a dive team hook the car up and they pulled it out. Also owning a flood car at one point it probably was an insurance write off then junked. The car was probably at least 20 years old at the time this was filmed so it wasn't worth anything back then

Those old GM full sized models were infamous for being riddled with manufacturing defects that ranged from minor annoyances (air leaks due to bad seals) to life threatening (engines that would spontaiously burst into flames, transmissions that jumped out of park), in this case it was a defect within the transmission that allowed the torque converter to trip the shift mechanism and put the car into gear. The older they got the worse the problems got especially if they weren't maintained properly.

What would you expected? She's stupid in the first place, you think she would have any brain cell for getting the hammer!!! LOL. I'm the mother myself, it furious me when I see things like this happen!!!

Their brains will react to it for the rest of their lives even if they do not recall it. I speak from expirience and Dr's diagnosis.

Since this was 28 years ago it would be interesting to find The two younger children Who were in the car and ask them if they remember.

At first I wondered why she junked the car but then again it was on when it sank in the lake so the engine was most likely a goner by the time it was pulled out. (Too much water into an engine that's on will kill it.) Couple that with the transmission and brakes being bad and there you go. Personally, I'm a bit nostalgic about that type of automobile but oh well. I'm not going to restore them all.

Austin Lucas I think station wagons from the 60s - early 80s were pretty ugly.

+West McAllister Beauty in the eye of the beholder, like favorite food and all that. I can see the point if you're talking about "the stressed mom mobile" thing though if that was even a thing in the 1960s-1980s.

could've popped the plugs out and crank it over until the water comes out and change all the fluids
@101Volts8 жыл бұрын
It might be worth a shot but as it was running when it went in I wonder what extent the engine was damaged if at all (which I expect it was.)

I don't get how the car began rolling. It sounded like it went into gear but when they showed the inside of the car again, the gearshift looked to be still in park
@101Volts10 жыл бұрын
William Shatner said near the end (12:36) "The car's transmission and brakes were found to be bad." So, the car literally went out of park and into drive while the gear-shift was still in park. Whether she had the emergency brake on or not, I don't know.
@tinawhite53108 жыл бұрын
the transmission and brakes were bad it switched into gear by itself
@theblindredneck7476 жыл бұрын
From stories I’ve heard it wasn’t uncommon for automatic transmissions to slip into gear.

Some help 911 was. JC. Those kids would be fuckin dead if it weren't for neighbours. Like, even though you couldn't get a clear idea of where the water was the boy was describing what was happening so CLEARLY he could see what was going on......THUS....going to the boy would bring you to the water.
