Yeah the whole committing to a link summon ruling is pretty BS because you have to decide what monster you link summon before you send the materials to GY. You don't send the materials to GY BEFORE deciding on what to link summon. If you send the materials to GY that implies you've already decided what link monster will be summoned. If the monster in question isn't even in the ED then the attempt to link summon was illegal and thus you rewind to before the link summon was attempted. At least, that's what would happen if yugioh rulings made sense and were consistent

This is why you for example cannot use thunder dragon fusion to shuffle back a thunder dragon titan and then fusion summon that same titan, you have to have a titan already in the extra deck for that to work because you decide what monster is being fusion summoned BEFORE doing anything with the materials. If you don't you shouldn't have sent them to begin with since you should have chosen a monster to summon before sending the monsters

Pretty sure that if you realize at the same moment as they did in the game, you can just attempt to summon something illegal. Say, i:p if they had it. They you say something like "oops, ip cant be made with a link monster", and the game reminds with you maybe receiving a warning. Could go theoretically pretty far: - oops, I tried to summon accesscode with only 3 link value - oops, I tried to synchro baronne with a link monster - oops, I tried to fuse for mudragon using 2 wrong materials and no fusion spell Idk at which point you get a game loss, but isn't all of these technically ok?

at nats, my op proceeded to put to monsters in grave and said link. Then he put them back on the field, said thinking. I called a judge and judge ruled on his favor saying he didn't put any monster on the field bc he "didn't actually place a monster" to conduct a link summon... No if you send monsters to the grave then look at yout extra deck your committing to a summon bc you legally sent them then picked up your extra deck. One of my friends is a judge and my other is a head judge and they both ruled it the same. When you make a play you are committed to do so if it's legal. It's the same as using super poly but then realize you don't have the monster you want and want to take it back but as long as there's a legal target you have to do it.
