We raised an orphaned squirrel last year. It was such an awesome experience. As a family we gave it our best and she gave us a lot of great memories and photos. She hung around pretty close to our home for the first year but since we don't have many squirrel friendly trees, she ventured off on her own for the winter. She comes back every few weeks to say hello but is now completely wild and is thriving in the neighborhood at a distance.

Dani, after watching this video, it made me realize that Rue is turning somewhat domesticated even though he is still wild. Rue depends on you and your husband for food and being protective. It’s not a bad thing and I know that you are trying in every possible way to keep the wildlife instinct there but Rue will always know where to turn to and that is you and your husband. Great episode and I hope I’m wrong. Bless you both 🙏 and thank you for sharing.

This one really tugged at my heartstrings. My little grey squirrel rescue is now around six months old. I found him when he was around a month old when a wind storm blew him out of his nest. I released him 14 April this year. I go down by the creek where he seems to hang out alot to feed him everyday. If he isn't there I call for him a he normally comes running for his pecan or walnut or whatever I have for him. Sometimes he follows me around outside doing yard work or while relaxing. I believe we are very bonded to each other but really think I am a merely food dispenser in his eyes. I call him Murphy and he knows his name.

I laugh, I cry, and I hate when each episode ends. Thank you for taking responsibility for Roo, for being such a good 'mom', and also for documenting the journey. Your photography and cinematography are lovely. I have made a similar journey raising a baby bird 'Cheevey," for the sound s/he made when happy. I dug up most of my yard, finding worms and grubs for feed, after weaning, and later made several trips to the woods until one time Cheevey never returned. Visiting the woods thereafter, Cheevey would return the call, until ultimately only silence. this 💗

I can totally appreciate you and your boyfriend introducing Roo to his enclosure then when he had enough he just wanted to go back home...just like parents taking their kid or kids out to play. It was really wonderful to see Roo recovering so well! The glimpse of your next video looked really sad with Roo getting sick but I hope he heals and gets well again. You both are incredible people and I’m in awe of everything you’re both going through and doing for this beautiful squirrel……we feed wild squirrels and 1 of ours called Cyril, turned up one day almost torn to shreds, he couldn’t use 2 legs, 1 in the front, 1 in the back, we have no idea what happened, but the damage was extensive, he’d stripped off his fur cleaning his wounds we couldn’t get near him to help him, we were devastated BUT within 2-3 weeks pretty much all his wounds - and he had deep lacerations - had healed over, and he could use his legs and within a month to 6 weeks you could barely even see where all the damaged skin had been because his fur had grown back ……we never underestimate a wild animals resilience either now…..thanks again for being wonderful human beings and we’re glad you got multiple peoples advice too xx❤xx

Would fall asleep instantly when I flipped my tshirt up over her, like a pouch on my stomach. Sweatshirt, blanket. She never did leave to the wild. Had a big cage/house inside my home. Door never closed. Many many years later passed away. Was difficult but, what a life experience. The love that my "Moony" brought was amazing! I love Squirrels and been watching your story from the beginning. Hope he makes it through! Peace to you. Washington State

Bless him, I guess we have to remember his memories of outside were sad.... loosing his mother, then his siblings...falling out a tree and hurting himself. Poor little mite....but as they say it's ultimately slow and gentle wins the race...as his outdoor excursions increase so will his inner squirrel instincts..which essentially I know happened as this was back in the summer and a successful release is what happened. I am like everyone following you very proud of what you've done, and I'm sure you'll always be in his memories, I seen so many versions by other people and some were even lucky enough to have their rescues come and visit them now and again, even better one female about 2years after release finally came to say hi and Even brought her very own brood to visit the family who rescued her. This is how our relationship with wildlife should be...we are the world's caretakers and we need to lovingly step up to our responsibility.

Your right wild animals are so resilient but sometimes the injury is just too much, that was the case with one of my visiting wild hedgehogs just before Christmas here in the uk. I noticed on camera he/she wasn't using one of their back legs very well, couldn't walk very fast & wasn't interested in eating at all. I took them to a local wildlife rescue & sadly the x-ray showed a severely broken pelvis so the kindest thing to do was to put them to sleep. They must of been in so much pain, hence the lack of interest in eating but despite having a broken pelvis this poor hedgehog was still trying to carry on doing what they do every night. I'm just glad this hedgehog visited my garden so I could intervene & help as it would of had a slow horrible death out in the wild otherwise I expect.

Poor Rue! I hope he's healing all right. I wish the best to you, and Juan for caring for this indeed unlucky squirrel. It's maybe not the best time for you guys, but I need to point out something about Rue's enclosure. I come from the country in Ontario and your enclosure and type of wiring do not protect him much from some of the wildlife here. Where I come from, just a small weasel can chew through the ''chicken wire"" you used and/or dig under the wooden frame. Bigger wildlife will do bigger damage. As Rue hopefully continues to occupy his enclosure, more his enclosure will collect his smell and the leftovers of his food and presence. It only takes one small hungry intruder going through to change everything. Depending on your surroundings, please consider adding reinforcements. Best wishes!
