These little guys were found half dead in the mountains of Utah.
We left them their the first day we saw them hoping their mother skunk would return to help her babies.
We were worried they might die in the night.
We thought one was already dead becuase it didn’t move as our horse stepped over it.
So we came back the next day and found the three babies still on the trail.
Now we assumed two were dead because they weren’t moving.
We decided as a family we had to do something. Letting them die wasn’t an option.
They were so far gone none of them put up a fight as we put them in a box for transport back to our home.
Ones eyes were filled with gunk and two of them weren’t movings.
We called a skunk rescue in Texas and she told us to feed them goats milk and call our local rehabilitation centers.
We tried that calling Fish and Game. They told us if we brought the babies in they would be euthinized.
We knew we couldn’t bring them in.
That night we fed them goats milk, force feeding the two barely moving.
The next morning all were doing remarkably better but we still weren’t in the clear.
We called rehabilitation center after rehabilitation center being given the same answer. If we brought them in they would be killed.
One center even stressed that even if they did take the skunks they ran the risk of losing their license to save animals.
Desperate I posted to a animal rescue page online asking for help.
At midnight I got a call from a lady telling me I immediately needed to take my post down. That if fish and game saw it they would come take them away and kill them.
She told me that even though it was illegal to rehabilitate skunks in the state of Utah she knew people who would be willing to smuggle them out of Utah to a neighboring state where they could legally be taken care of and saved.
She stressed that doing so would be illegal but that we couldn’t let them die.
I didn’t want them to die either but wasn’t willing to break the law.
Frustrated we prayed for a miracle.
That miracle came in the form of Sarah Jacobsen from Wild Wonders. She contacted us late in the evening saying she could take all three babies legally.
She had found homes for them in different rescue centers where they would be used to help educate the public about the wonders of the animal kingdom.
Dropping off the baby skunks we were amazed at the safe haven she had made for these rescues.
Each time we would feed them or play with them they would eagerly drink the milk from our dropper.
After eating they would come and snuggle in our clothes or chase each other.
I know what we did wasn’t big. In the big scheme of things how important is the life of three baby skunks.
But I have to believe every act of kindness makes a difference. Together we can change the world. Just one random act of kindness at a time.
