I spent 20 years in the US Navy, and ended up having to drive all over the country in all types of weather - and unless it was literally a life-threatening emergency, there's nothing on God's Green Earth that would convince me to try driving in the conditions you were showing in this video.

You must have never been to utah. I just drove in that type of conditions last week. Its usually qt least every few years we get dumped on with 8 to 10 inches. If you live up on the benches, near the canyon or in the canyon, you can get 1 1/2 to 2 feet. we call the storms that hit in the morning a " commuter special", but i will say i am in the valley, not on those types of roads in the video.

As someone that loves to drive on snowy and icy roads, it's all about having the right equipment. For ice like that, the right equipment is tire chains on the front and rear wheels. That means real chains, not cable chains or tire socks.

When our youngest son (now 37) was in high school, he had more common sense than most adults that I have ever known. He was and is an observer and a listener. He would encounter what Jeff would more than likely call something crazy, and walk away while shaking his head, saying to himself “I hate stupid people.” He doesn’t hate people, it’s their lack of common sense or any sense at all that completely mystifies him.

Story from a relative that lived farther north (experienced driving in snow) and moved to Atlanta: The city experienced a similar winter storm and relative was carefully driving thru a neighborhood with rolling hills. Some fool comes speeding around him and disappears over the next hill. Relative gets to the bottom of the hill and sees the 'fool' in the ditch. Relative stops at the bottom of the hill, rolls the window down and calls out "you ok?" The 'fool' response "yes" and relative rolls his window up and drives away.

I personally don't use YakTraks on my feet in icy conditions. I live and work in Wisconsin where we encounter such conditions every winter. I watch videos of a tow company in Oregon who does snow/ice recoveries. He will often times use over the tire "socks" on conditions such as what your battling in this video. Stay safe out there.

Over 25 years going to Gatlinburg, we had never been for Christmas until 2022. I reserved a house on Wiley Oakley Dr for Christmas 2022, wouldn't you know it would be a Christmas with below 0 temps and some snow. Being prepared for ice storms and hurricanes over the decades, we didn't care, we just grabbed groceries for a few days, the rental cabin had gas logs, "Let it snow"! Even though we were in a 4x4 SUV, we stayed at the cabin during the bad weather. I was not driving down into town unless it was a serious emergency. The salt trucks were running Wiley Oakley Dr through the night, roads stayed in decent condition.

Carbide tipped steel studded snow tires are the smartest and safest way to go when diving on snowy/icy roads. I have been using them since the early 1970's and have never had an accident, never gotten stuck or slid off a icy roadway. Drive slow on ice. Triple the following distance between your vehicle and the one ahead. You never get to your destination faster by following the vehicle ahead too closely. Dive very slow and never lock up you brakes because when you do so you have Zero steering control. Fill your tank with gas. The extra weight helps a bit and you never know how long you can be stuck for, so you might need the extra fuel to stay warm. Place a 5 gallon bucket (with a lid on it) filled with sand in your trunk or bed of your pickup truck. Sand is highly effective on ice. Before you do something dumb ask yourself can I afford a replacement vehicle, can I afford a $300 or more tow out of a ditch?
