Welcome back to the rescue stories where today i share with you our latest intake named Chomps and her story of surrender. Chomps is a female Syrian hamster who's been living in a Tiny Tales Cage for most of her life. We had a pleasant experience with the owners and wanted to share this giant lovable gal with you. For those of you who're not aware, i run my own Foster Based Rescue where you can follow along in real time on IG for updates on all of our recent intakes and to see who's been adopted. And if you're interested to learn more about my hobby of rescue and fostering, please feel free to check out other videos on the channel as well as follow the social media accounts below.
Why not consider fostering yourself? Get involved and see for yourself what it means to be a Foster Home.

Luna Everdeen I feel really bad...I had my hamsters in their and had no clue that it was bad for them😔 I never treated them like a toy tho. Only the cage part! I’m upgrading it to a huge 877 square in cage!😊 I’m really proud of me getting past that cage and now feel like my hamster will be living the life it needs!❤️🐹 and yes I agree to this 100%!! I’m happy I found these hamster channels and how to take care of your hamster properly! I know I made a mistake but at least right when I found out it was to small I cried and made my mom get slabs from IKEA...😂 so now I’m gonna buy a hamster from a breeder but a good one✨❤️🐹

I work at a pet store. We get a lot of calls to relinquish animals. A few days ago I answered one of those calls. It was a woman asking to relinquish a hamster because they were afraid they didn't have enough time for it as they've been taking frequent few day vacations. Now if we have space we will take them in and adopt them back out. However this particular time we didn't have any space available. So I had two options: either I say yes and take this hamster home as a personal adoption, or I say no and try to send them elsewhere who may or may not have space (keeping in mind I personally knew our local small animal rescue who is foster based didn't have any extra space at all) for this poor hamster. And after saying no I would never know what happened to the animal after. So....I said yes. Without knowing how tame, what species, or what gender, I said yes. The woman brought in a 20 gallon long with a cardboard top with the sweetest long haired male hamster sitting inside. Regardless of how sweet he is, I made THE best choice back then. I hate saying no and not knowing what happens to said animals. Currently my buddy Twix is still in the 20 gallon Long, as I'm currently waiting on a pay day to get a 40 breeder for him so no worries. And now he's here with me, where he will be spoiled until the end of his days. I absolutely adore your videos, always have. So this was me helping do my part for some of our furry friends. I can't be a full on small animal rescue, but I can help when I can. Even the smallest animal deserves to be loved. Thanks always for your videos Munchie 😊

I don't know if it's really a thing in the US, but here in the UK in Primary school during assembly's we had people come and talk to people about all different topics to spread awareness (things like bullying, young carers, global warming etc) , and once we had someone come in with loads of different hamster cages and rabbit cages to explain size requirements and how pets are a responsibility etc. And sometimes people like them would set up stalls at festivals and stuff like that and I think it's be so cool if you could do something like that! I know lots of kids talked about it afterwards andtaln about it to their parents. If this was implemented in more schools I honestly think this would help many hamsters and other animals to have better lives and be viewed as living animals. (Although this could be said for class pets but that can't ever work out really to give hamsters stability)

i was about 8 when i got my first hamster. i saw a video online of a hamster running and being cute, and i wanted one as a needy child. so my grandma allowed it but to only live at her house. i loved it for about a month and then just didn’t care for it. my grandma fell in love with cloud and took great care of her, about a week before she passed i actually started doing research on hamsters, but unfortunately she passed away. i was devastated that i took such bad care of cloud. one day we went to pet smart so my grandma could rescue another hamster (she runs a rescue as well) when in the back there was a baby winter white. i asked why he was back here and the employee said that they were putting him down because he’s blind. i took this as an opportunity and called my mom straight away. i asked her if i could buy him and he could stay at our house instead of my grandmas. she agreed so i used my own money to buy him everything. i started off with a 10 gallon until i had enough to buy a 25 gallon wich is what i have now. once i got him the 25 gallon we took him to our local vet to check his eyes out. turns out that he’s only blind in his right eye. if your wondering, dumbledore is the nicest dwarf hamster ever, he loves being held and playing, his favorite treat is baby puffs! his bond with me so special and like no other, he’ll sit on my hand and fall asleep and he’s never bit me in the year that we’ve had him. please take care of your hamsters guys! i promise they are worth it!!

I absolutely agree with you, Ms. Munchie. I very firmly believe that when someone chooses to adopt a pet (be it a dog, cat, snake, hamster, fish, what have you.....) it is akin to parents choosing to adopt a newborn baby. You are literally taking responsibility for another life. Pets rely on you, their owner, for EVERYTHING. Especially when you have a pet like a hamster or a fish or a snake that's in a cage or a tank that can't fend for itself. They rely completely on you for food, water, shelter, medical care, stimulation, grooming. It is unfair to place that kind of responsibility on, say, a 5 year old child, just because your 5 year old goes to the pet store one day and sees a hamster and says "Oh, its SO cute, Mommy, I want it" and you think getting them this pet will teach them "responsibility" and so you expect that child to be able to take care of the animal themselves. Its just plain ridiculous. Children get bored. They get distracted. They lack the maturity for that kind of commitment. So IF you choose to get a pet for your child, you can ENCOURAGE them to help you care for the pet, BUT you should accept the fact that YOU, as the parent, are the one who is actually taking responsibility for this little life. And if you are unwilling to take that responsibility seriously, you shouldn't have a pet in my opinion. Too many times, have I watched your videos and seen stories of hamsters (some that come from really bad situations) being re-homed because parents made an impulsive and foolish decision, either to buy a hammy for their child and the kid got bored and lost interest, or they bought the hammy, THOUGHT it was so cute and they wanted more, and then bred their hamster to another one and now suddenly they have 10 hamsters and are completely overwhelmed and then the babies get dumped on Craigslist or (if they are really lucky) they are found by you and rescued. Or they get a hamster and then a month later, they are off to college or preoccupied with some other commitment and don't have time to care for the hamster, so again....re-homed.

Everyone is different. Child can refer to anyone younger than 13. Even a 13 year old can have trouble taking care of an animal. I've known adults to be terrible owners but as a child you do not make money, your hormones haven't peaked, your mental state isn't fully developed. I was once a child, I did an okay job for the most part but in no way was I fully responsible for my hamsters and fish as a kid.
@MunchiesPlace
@MunchiesPlace 5 жыл бұрын
@Rouarc 11 You're considered a preteen. 13 and under is a child and that's who I'm referring to as your brain is not full developed, so that's why children at these ages don't make choices on their own when it comes to responsibility. I wasn't responsible at the age of 10. Not fully. I don't expect everyone is the same but the majority of kids who think they are now, really don't know till they're older and look back to reflect on it.

Over here in the UK people who want to rehome their pet tend to offer them for free and they really should not be rehoming for free as it is quite bad at moment for cruel people to trick owners into handing their beloved over to them, but what is really happening is the new owner has no intension of caring for that pet, they use it as bait in dog fighting, which really angers me and our RSPCA doing nothing about it. So I try my best and warn owners never offer pets for free and tell them why. I spoke to a lady recently who was offering her cat for free on a famous website Gumtree and I sent her a nice email telling her about what is happening to pets offered for free. And she was so grateful and took her ad down and decided to hand her beloved cat to rescue instead, she thanked me as she wanted the best for her cat.

Some other tips to helps your hamster not be stressed is having multiple hides, a large enough wheel to comfortably exhaust her energy, and trying to keep the room quiet, especially during the day. My sister who was 6 when she got her first hamster and had it for 2 years before it passed. She loved that hamster to bits and spoiled her as much as she could. My past male was bar chewing so much that it caused a raw patch right above his nose.

I'm 12 and my winter white dwarf hamster is sadly in a critter trails hamster cage. I've tried to convince my mom to get a bigger cage but she thinks that'd just be a waste of money and space. She also thinks because Kirby (my hamster) is small she can live just fine in a small cage. I'm only 12 so i can't just go out a by a new cage with no money. How do i convince her that Kirby needs a cage upgrade?

I own 6 guinea pigs, and some items I bought for them were more suitable for hammies, and I have some little houses and a few grass huts, all new or great condition, so I would love to send them to you. Please let me know! Chomps could use something, lol!

I can't stand it when the add is "cage for sale" and then the animal is only mentioned in the description... I was trying to find a spare cage I could borrow for my bunnies once because I was getting a second rabbit and she needed somewhere to stay before I could have her bonded with my other rabbit... Someone sent me an add for a rabbit cage WITH another rabbit inside... because that's helpful. I needed a spare cage so she could stay ALONE while I had her fixed and during recovery... if I could just stuff two unfamiliar rabbits together I wouldn't need the extra cage to begin with... (Pretty sure the other rabbit was an un-neutered male too so... yeah that's not gonna work.) (In the end I ended up just building her a small pen around an old dog-house, and a while later I bought a large collapsible dog-crate so that I would always have a spare cage available if I needed one. The rabbits don't live in a cage permanently btw... They live in an outdoor hutch with a permanent pen attached.)

Every time my son and I are at Petsmart and we see people buying these small hamster cages we want to run over to them and school them. Its so hard to watch that knowing it's not okay for the hamster. Most people just don't know any better and I wish the employees would tell them, but I also understand that goes against their store purpose of selling stuff. Some of them probably don't know either. :(

Tara Vanflower I couldn't agree more with you. Sadly, a lot is a money thing. Like you said, even if they know, they are encouraged to sell their products, and they don't want to scare away buyers, who may change their mind based on requirements, which equals less money for them. It's sad.

I intake rabbits similarly to what you do with the littler furry friends of the world. I was on a surrender of this extremely skittish and dangerously overweight Dutch rabbit. The meeting went well, untill the very end, it put me in such a sour mood. As I was on my way out the little girl of the family possibly around 7 or 10 said to her daddy "can we get that hamster now?". I felt like I should have said something but I don't think it was my place.

@MunchiesPlace
@MunchiesPlace 5 жыл бұрын
Called out? More like addressed a growing concern about trading pets that is a pet peeve of mine as animals get shuffled around. But that's for another discussion because snakes are one of the major pets in the pet trade that are prone to this. Just like birds, not so much for small mammals. But it's a growing problem.
@sarahbragg1503
@sarahbragg1503 5 жыл бұрын
Munchie's Place Girl if anything I think you should do it more often, more power to you expressing your concern about those animals! Although ( in my opinion) its a totally different story when it comes to breeders but that’s probably not what you where talking about.
@MunchiesPlace
@MunchiesPlace 5 жыл бұрын
@@sarahbragg1503 correct I wasn't talking about breeders. Although that's on another different topic as hamsters also have to be in rack systems at breeding mills just like snakes are. So there's an entirely different movement going on for breeding practices from well known mass breeders. Cause that's the thing most mass breeders use are rack systems. But I'm talking about the snake keeping as many people I've come across like to trade up or trade for another species to care for. So they're not committed to that single pet and allow it to shuffle around. The thought of it is what I do not like but if they provide correct husbandry, good for them. The pet trade in general is just so corrupt, idk how we've allowed it to get this far. This goes for sales, shipping, breeding, rehoming and releasing.

Sadly I saw a little girl adopting a hamster she looked 5 or 6 and for a cage they bought the PETCO CARRY ON CAGE. I really wanted to tell her it was not good but I just couldn't and I also saw them get softwood betting a fleece bed and softwood shavings and it just broke my heart so badly knowing a hamster will have to live in that.
