A horrible injury from entanglement saves this seals life: if his wound had not been so visible, the OCN rescue team would not have noticed the entanglement. Until they can pull out a piece of thin fishing line, they are convinced that they are dealing with one of their old rescues.
In many cases, the seal's cut starts to heal with a layer of seemingly healthy skin. It is impossible to see the entanglement, unless there is a little tag from the knot sticking out, or unless there is a bad infection, like in this case. The healthy top layer of skin is deceiving, the seal eventually outgrows the entanglement and will suffocate or starve to death.
This seal is still young, and he will be easy to spot for us for a while, until his wound has fully healed up again. 🦭
