This baby seal has been caught in a very bright green fishing line spool for quite a while, it is already so tight that the rescuers cannot slide it over her head to free her. She must have found it when she was very small, and for a few weeks if not months, she has been carrying it around wherever she went. Nobody had seen it and reported it, nobody had come to her rescue, and even during our own patrols at Cape Cross, we had not spotted her before. Maybe she was hidden away by other seals or rocks, or she was at sea to feed whenever we were around, maybe we missed her in spite of our brilliant binoculars and spotting scopes. But today is her lucky day, and with the help of our trusted Leatherman tools, Antoine and Naude can saw the hard plastic off her neck and she will fully recovery from her horrible entanglement. 🦭

A small thing perhaps, but the fact that you guys also picked up the microplastic shavings brings awareness to that part of our ecological harm to the oceans. While we see the big pieces of junk entangle the seals and other animals, we don't directly see the effects of microplastics in the intestinal tracts and bloodstreams of so many creatures, and even ourselves.

The fact that you guys cleaned up what you could of the plastic shavings from the sawing blew my mind. I'd been thinking about them as the sawing was going on; but I guess as you're there to rescue wildlife/seals from garbage/plastic garbage it makes sense it would be something you'd be on top of as you work. You're inspirations and role models to us all, thank you.

I have to start off with how sweet it was to hear you both talking to her and reassuring her that she would be okay. Then when she was let free, Antoine’s, “Aaaaahhh... weeeeee”, as she went into the water was so wonderful (I’m swooning again 🥰🤣). I can’t believe that something like that was able to get around her neck! It was so difficult to even saw through and the micro plastics left behind were such a hazard. It’s sad to see how so much of our garbage can be deadly to these innocent little lives.

Makes me think of a saw I keep in a first aid kit. It's made for cutting wood but I'm sure it would be good on plastic also. Simply a thin wire/cable with thumb rings at each end. The wire has machined "teeth" or a uniformed roughness to it. You'd have to thread it though the plastic ring first, but the cutting would take only seconds to accomplish. I'm sure cheap money online. Great work guys.

Oh that's cool. I've never heard of something like that, but that's an absolute great idea. Your comment deserves more likes. I hope they see your comment amd can maybe get one. They get donations but idk how to go about sending something like that to their country bcuz it isn't as easy for them to get stuff as it is for ppl in the US but if they could find one there and buy it, I think that would help them alot and sounds small enough they can carry it in their lil pouch with their other tools. Thanks for sharing that!! ❤😊

I had the same idea, those wire saws are pretty cheap and sawing from the inside out also eliminates the risk of sawing into the animal.

Very cool rescue. I have a suggestion. I know you guys carry a lot of odds and ends to help with rescues, like the knitting needle to get tight recreational line out of really bad cuts. Would a thin piece of metal, I'm talking about soda/beer can thin, helped? It could've been slid between the collar and the seal. That way, if the saw went through the collar, it would've hit the metal and not the seal. Just a thought. Keep up the great work!
