I just bought a pre-owned quite well-painted Imperial Knight (missing the rocket launcher but it was £50 compared to £90 for a new one) buuuuut... despite it being nicely painted, my original plan of adding some finishing touches and re-basing it have gone out the window because it absolutely *stinks* of cigarettes! It won't come out! The only thing I can do is to totally strip it. I'd like to disassemble it too so I can get into the crevices, but it's been _very_ strongly glued together with polystyrene solvent - that sucker is _never_ coming apart.

Is there a reason I don't see people putting the light source low and to one side, maybe to create a sunset/rise effect?
@eBayMiniatureRescues4 жыл бұрын
I’ve seen plenty of good paint jobs with that idea in mind, the problem is, we are generally putting our models on a battlefield in the daylight, so a top down highlight makes the most sense. It also makes the most sense in our minds eye to see the models represented in this way, since everything is being artificially generated, our brains want to see highlights in the “proper” place, if you know what I mean. It would be super awesome to see an entire army painting like how you are saying, it would certainly stand out on the table as well. I’d recommend checking out some of Roman Lappat’s work on Instagram, he does some amazing stuff with non zenethil lighting :)

Do you use your regular airbrush when you spray varnish, or do you use a cheap one dedicated to that purpose?
@eBayMiniatureRescues4 жыл бұрын
I used to switch to a cheap airbrush for varnishing, but honestly, as long as you clean out your airbrush right after, like you would with any paint, then it’s fine. I’ve been shooting varnishes out of my patriot 105 for quite a while now. If you really want to save your airbrush, check out AK interactive or Testors spray can varnishes. They are top level and you never have to worry about your airbrush :)

@eBayMiniatureRescues4 жыл бұрын
When I buy a model on eBay, more often than not, it’s in really bad shape, sometimes I’m pleasantly surprised by the quality of the build or paint job. In this case the paint wasn’t terrible, and nothing was super broken. That’s great and all, but what good is the model if I can’t try and do something to get it in a little bit better place? I put it back into eBay because I don’t play 40k right now, so someone else will put this right into their army, and have a good story to tell, otherwise it would have been on a shelf somewhere with an ok paint job, not making anyone happy.

The carapace and related parts are brilliant but the work on the skeleton or substructure touched on a pet peeve of mine. You painted the whole thing one colour and toned that colour for weathering or whatever. I may have it wrong for the future but, this is a machine of many parts all serving specific functions. Quite simply the cabling would not be metallic, it is meant to be flexible to stretch and contract. The protective sheath on the hip joints would function the same way. They would be made from different materials and would wear quicker resulting in replacement parts looking newer than the superstructure. They are points on the machine that would colour differently even if the same colour of gold was used simply because of the variation in material. Also they are parts that collect stains from lubrication and subsequent grime adhering to that. Painting it all one colour smacks of laziness. All the more disappointing when it is someone like yourself, who, and let's be clear on this, is a far superior artist to someone like me. I do have decades old models that show what I mean from times before I learned of washes and shading, but at least I looked to the detail.
