Many of you will wish you could have your first car back, and through a weird twist of fate, Mike Fernie is getting that opportunity. Having sold his first car, a Rover 25, back when he was a teenager, he has stumbled upon that very car in a very sorry state. Time to get it back to the workshop and set about making it a minter!

Just about to post exactly the same, 1.4 105 48mm throttle body, 105 throttle cable and the ECU, 5as and fobs from the same car and jobs a gooden. Or just swap the tb and cable and have kmaps sort it.

This changes the throttle position relative to WOT or fully closed in some way right? That limiting spring. It just didn't make sense to me how the presenter explained it. Why would the engine not know there was more AIR available. Of course there is a map for it, the engine will compensate. Unless you are removing the ECU's ability to read the amount of air moving through its mass air flow sensor. Or am I missing something? He really threw me off explaining it like he did.

My first car was a 2003 Chevrolet Impala LS that I bought from my mom for $4500. I still remember how I felt when I came home from work with that car (mom let me use it since I worked evenings and she worked days) and I saw a black Hyundai SUV in the driveway. It wasn’t there when I left. When I asked her about it, she said that was her new car. And when I realized what that meant, I gave her a hug and then looked back out the window at what was now my car. I was ecstatic. 3.8L V6, sunroof, fog lights, headed leather seats, a short spoiler on the trunk, and the whole thing was painted a metallic dark tan somewhere in between gold and brown. I had that car for some four years before the transmission went. If I could, I’d find that car and restore it back to a factory grade look. Way to inspire me, Mike!

My first car was a 2007 BMW 328i. Man I remember buying her on a Thursday early on during my senior year in 2019. I pulled up to school that Friday feeling like a million bucks. The heater actually worked, I could listen to my own music be the radio, and best of all she felt amazing to drive. Later that day my friends and I went to the school football game and I was filled with pride watching their reactions as we walked towards the lot to leave. I still have her today and I’m sure I’ll ever have the strength to sell her. I plan on being her final owner and caring for her until the end of time

I was extremely lucky. My grandfather drove a 2005 Mercedes Benz E500. When I turned 16 (2016), it was 11 years old and he had just had knee surgery. Getting in and out of such a low car was an issue for him, so he gave it to me. I must say, having a 5 liter V8 in my first car was pretty incredible. Literally double the size of my current Hyundai Sante Fe Sport's engine. Had to sell the Merc when I went to college. It wasn't big enough to move all of my things, and had too many problems to trust it with the regular 800 mile trip too and from school. I miss it though.

I was actually happy with selling my first car! It was dying so I used it as a trade in for a mondeo mk3 diesel (which I also traded in for a mk3 mondeo petrol). My first car was a 1990 Jaguar XJ6, this was almost 15 years ago. 4.0 poverty spec with beige cloth interior 😝. It was my dad's. He was always a bit of a delboy character and had bought it used instead of the other option which was a Granada v6 if I remember correctly. He was super chuffed. Sadly he passed away when I was 16 and it sat in the garage for over a year getting in a sorry state. At 17, and with a Haynes manual and a cheap halfords toolkit(which I still have), I took my first steps in learning car mechanics. Sorted some rust, fixed the leaky oil cooler and got it MOT'ed. The money I saved buying a car went towards insurance. And this was when you could pay to get 3rd party on other cars, which enabled me to drive it. Bit dubious of course. Unfortunately, after 2 years the rust got soo bad. Beyond the skill and finances of a 19 year old teenager. And with no space to keep it, ended up scraping it. Me and mum were in tears seeing it drive away on the back of a low loader. One of my biggest regrets as now, I would happily spend the money to save it. Still, that car was one of the seeds that ended with me as a mechanical design engineer - I've even made parts for JLR! Maybe a kid in 20 years time might be fixing something I designed 😅

Loving this. Strangely I almost seem to have shadowed Mike's early car history - I had a 1.4 Rover 200 ('99 in BRG with bizarre purple carpets), then after a few months in a Peugeot 306 Dturbo I moved on to an Alfa GTV t-spark and that was followed by a green MK2 MX5. Can't wait to see this and the V10 MX5 finished

My first car was a small truck (Chevy S10) I bought to get all of my stuff to college (280 miles away) and back home at end of term. I used it through my Masters, then sold it. I had no strong feelings for it either way, but it never let me down. The guy I sold it to sold it to a migrant ranch worker who somehow made it down to my family ranch and began working for the family, unbeknownst to me. When his family had a major emergency, he sold it to the ranch for plane ticket money, and so now my first car, 26 years later, is alive and well, in the family, and earning a living as a hay hauler for the cattle.

I am honestly so happy to see such an under appreciated little car get so much love. I have always loved rovers and they get so much stick. I cannot wait to see the result. I remember i wanted a 25 for my first car, however my first car was a 1991 Rover 214S 3 door, a predecessor to the 25. The same 1.4 K series but a much more basic variant! With 8 valves and an SU carb. Rover flame red and I still own it (although I am only 21) and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Neighbour had a 1994 Opel Vectra A (Vauxhall Cavalier) sitting in his garden for about 8 years. It was missing a few parts, including a radiator, accessory belt, dashboard cluster, headlights, etc. Had moss growing on the inside of the car. Hooked a new battery up to it, fired right up. No smoke, no weird noises. Started and drove.

My first car was a five dour K10 March (Micra) 1.0 with a 4spd manual. It was ridiculously quick -in my mind- but that's because it buzzed and rattled and vibrated along with the engine which you had to wring out to get anywhere even moderately quick. It was bullied on the road by the draft of passing vehicles and cross winds. It was great. Had it long enough to love it, but not nearly long enough modify it in any way. And aside from a set of tyres, nothing went wrong with it while I had it. Keep in mind that this car was 13 years old when I got it.
