Rescuing SPACE ORKS - Color Testing for an Army

This week I begin testing on a 40k Ork army I bought off of eBay. I grab some of my favorite color combinations and put paint on several models. Testing is pretty important when it comes to coming up with a good game plan for painting a whole army, or even a start collecting box. Having a step by step guide will help you paint faster, and not put you in a position where you have to make decisions on the fly.

Love the color scheme, the purple leather was a really good choice, however I've found the blueish color for the clothes a bit dark. But the suggestion that orks weaars denim just blown my mind.

I get my best "denim" effect with Drakenhof Nightshade over a pale-blue basecoat... looks great.

I love when that happens :) Test models are great for coming up with a plan. Nighthaunt are great for testing too, lots of possibilities with all the ghosts and cloaks.

Also painting my boys. Using contrast and 1 or 2 layers of highlights. Super efficient and still looks very good for the amount of time I put on the grunts. Timed it to 30min per model painting them in Bad Moons colours.

i prioritize shadow over highlights, dry brushing over dark colors is all the highlights i use with a lot of washes... it gives me a very muted color pallett which i prefer

Such a simple and time saving tip, I use the mono pose space marines and Eldar from second edition to test out my color schemes. I may finally get to painting my Black Reach Orks this year, lol.

My very first project was starting a Tau army and I figured I would go with a variant of viorla sept which is primarily white. I got three models deep before deciding it was too difficult at my skill level to paint an entire army white and made a switch. Those three models are white for "lore" reasons.

Man, I was a big fan of the orange and blue. Struck me as very Orkish. Orange jumpsuits scavenged from the manufacturing plants of a fallen hive city, would work well with the cobbled together workshop aesthetic that all the orks have, from their physique to the weapons and vehicles they use.

Yeah, there’s a ton of metal on the rest of the models, especially the killa-kans. I’ve got an idea of how I’m going to do those, but I might have to test one before sitting down for the whole thing. Either way, the metals are gonna stand out the most so having a good recipe will help get them done quicker :)

for 40k orks, your first choice should be a clan. Unless you're going Freebooter. each clan has some solid base colours, (red with yellow detailing for evil sunz, yellow with black detailing for bad moonz, black with red & white detailing for goffs, earthy/natural tones for snakebites, etc etc.) for an army full of part time meks? Deathskullz... so, a little blue warpaint and lots of lootaz

Using the non-patented Midwinter Minis Dipwash (R) Method. Just save the metallic parts for after that

Guy needs to bottle and sell it. I do like the look of that dip for orks, but the oil wash preserves the color, either way, more testing needs to be done! I’ll probably make a bath of the oil wash and dip them to save time :)

I chose Blood Axes, and have finished 1600ish points in 3 camo schemes... I'm happy with how they are coming out, but man is everything time consuming...

I made my own custom Klan called the "blood Eads" they have a nice red across the left side of their face sometimes right depending on helmet type or accessories :)

Love these colors. I'm partial to Orks myself. One thing I gotta know, I dont know if you've got an older video on it but I saw you've got your citadel paints in... dropper bottles? How'd you manage that cause I've seen many people suggest doing something like that

Definitely, and you’ll be glad you did. Having the airbrush be a regular part of your hobby opens up so many possibilities.

I try and airbush as much as possible when painting. Doing some necrons and done all the metal with the airbrush, not much left to do with a brush, and then more airbrush for the OSL makes it easy.

Same here lol, I've tried it a couple of times, but my results are just completely different from everyone else's and for me it just slows me down and provides a worse result than if I didn't use one

@@Born_Stellar So I just started painting my necrons the other day. After airbrushing the metal and then brushing the panels, I wasn't a fan of the look so decided to just flat airbrush all of it, and it went really well. Only thing you have to do is touch up a few metal spots here and there with a brush. Thankfully metallics tend to be very forgiving and hard to tell what was brushed and what was blown.

Did you strip the models when you bought them off eBay or just zenithal prime over the top?

Normally I do, but in this case the paint wasn’t actually too bad, some of the models were half painted, but a lot of them had bare plastic or were half primed. I did go through the models to get the mold lines, then primed them lightly with an airbrush followed by a zenethil of white ink. Keeping it all pretty thin the models turned out pretty good.

I don’t tend towards the box art, sometimes, like ironjawz with that yellow really speaks to me, but I’ve done so much of that, I wanted a change for these guys. The army in itself has lots of weird stuff in it, so custom colors make the most sense for me.

Any adive on making a large ork warboss? Like i just dont want to buy the ones wg alread has as they're not as imposing as i want a big warboss to be. I'll probably get one fron wg in the end for parts but Literally any adive would be much appreciated

I’ve been thinking about this a lot too. I have a Warboss, but you’re right, it’s not very imposing. I’m thinking of finding something bigger, maybe even using the ironjawz big boss as a base, throwing some guns on him and using that instead. The other option I was thinking of was using a killa kan and having him be some kind of mechanical monster. Personally that would fit with my army theme a bit better, but it could be really cool anyways. Best advice I can give is to find a model that would work as a body and convert from there. Almost anything you do will work because it’s orks. So as long as it has the same load out as the boss you should be good! Also, just checking on google images, I saw a great one made from a hellbrute.

the Ironjawz warboss worked for me. being 2 normal orks in height, he looks menacing in between his troops. I edited him a lot tho, added layers to his feet, so he is even higher. Basically drowned him in armor, so he looks as a deffdread. Added huge gun in one hand and a squig on shoulder. Looks really fine.
