As a seasoned boater, I’m ❤️ing the boat content John Ross!👍⚓️👍. You mentioned getting a pair of muffs/hooking up a hose to it..& it’s only been run a minute to get it started... that’s ok BUT I can probably almost guarantee you you’ll need to replace the impeller(s) - if so equipped! They circulate water into the engine to cool it, usually rubber, & probably shredded both from sitting so long & also starting it without a water hose hooked up to the boat. At any rate, it never hurts to replace them because if not either of the above, they’re most certainly warped (so to speak) in one direction; they’re cheap too & can save you from blowing it all up! 🔥🚤💥 TIP: Spray down the new impeller(s) with silicone spray while installing; this will provide some lubricant on it until water reaches it to lube it going forward. P.S. Speaking of which - please get a new fire extinguisher too. I’d hate to see it go up in flames & possibly injure/kill you or the next owner! Good Luck & looking forward to a few more videos on this beauty!!👍👍 ~ Larry

johnny smit WTF asked you!? It’s a comment directed towards John Ross & anyone that may be in the same situation with a boat project. No I’m not a master mechanic nor do I claim to be - far from it. I’ve been working on my personal boats, cars, etc decades before KZbin was even conceived. Excuse me for trying to help people by my experiences in boat repair. Have _you_ contributed any advice to this project? NO... and that’s ok. Perhaps you don’t know anything about boat repair, perhaps you do, I, for one, don’t care. It’s ok, you just sit there & hide behind your keyboard & contribute negative comments down here (& probably in society as well). Good day sir. 👋

@johnny smit You having a bad day? Everything Larry mentioned is correct. I'm old and have been running watercraft for a bunch of decades so experience has taught me a bunch. I wouldn't dream of risking my motor on a 50 year old boat by not replacing the impeller for the few bucks it will cost. I'm also wondering what that transom is like inside. Looks like a fun project though.

I'd listen to everyone telling you to get a new fire extinguisher. Ive worked in a chain marine store for 2 1/2 years. If you dont take the fire extinguisher out and shake it every so often the powder hardens in the bottom, especially after sitting. If it shakes and you can feel the powder you may be good. The gauges can also become faulty after a long period of time. They usually have dates stamped on the fire extinguisher or the label as well.

Nice clean up work, JR! You should start a nationwide movement where America finds those old, but good cars, boats and motorcycles, pull them from the yards and fields to bring them back to life. Counter our current throw away society. There is much value in old things too and with a little elbow grease, they can have a second chance. 🚜👍

A propeller is a fan which propels a fluid by pushing against it: it converts rotational motion into linear motion. An impeller is a rotor that produces a sucking force, and is part of a pump.
@dannyh9825 жыл бұрын
@@charleschamberlain53 you are correct. The impeller in the outdrive is used as a water pump, they are typically made if rubber and this boat has been sitting for 10 years. Also they are damaged from cranking the engine without water flow, it only takes a few seconds to destroy it. So if it isn't pumping the engine will overheat.

I don’t know much about vintage Sea Rays, but more modern ones (I assume same with yours) use an impeller which is in the drive to feed water to the water pump. I highly recommend you look into and replace that so you don’t instantly have overheating issues. In a modern boat they are a bi-annual replacement maintenance part.

My family bought a similar vintage Johnson branded tri-hull in the early 1980's. It was a V6 i/o like yours. My guess is that you have the 155hp engine. If I recall correctly after all these years I think it is a Ford engine, the 2.8L Cologne engine that Ford used in the Capri and later in the Pinto.

Next time ditch the CLR and get some Tilex. It's liquid, not foam so it covers better. that is a buick v6. they were common in the skylark of the day. and some jeep models. and is what is going to be an issue for you is exhaust manifolds I would start looking for extras now just in case you ever need them, every thing else is not hard to get and there is even some performance parts for them engines. use wix oil filters fram suck! and 10-40 oil. cause you run higher rpm with a boat engine👍 and carry an extra fuel pump with you and definitely replace the old one before you go out it looks original to me. and don't let that clr sit on that carpet there is an acid in it and it will affect it over time. rince well very well. 👍 awesome boat man👍

At the absolute minimum, you need to inspect the impeller and all of the bellows. Especially the shift cable bellows. I nearly sank one last year due to bad shift cable bellows. If you ever have vinyl that you care about, never use a magic eraser on it. Multisurface cleaner, gentle brush, 303 protectant. I hope you do well with ad revenue and affiliate links, because selling a boat can be really tough...especially this time of year. Wish you the very best, be safe.

Don’t forget to go through the outdrive unit - oil in there is probably shot and need to make sure it all works. Someone else already mentioned the cooling water impeller. You don’t want to put this much work in and find that you have outdrive issues. I have heard that some of those outdrive parts are made out of “unobtainium” material- IE- you cant get them anywhere.
