Very nice of HighTechAnts to sponsor you [and the Myrmica in a way] :D Sunburst is actually just sugar water with yellow coloring btw :) but its made in a way and has some conservatives, so it doesn't spoil very easily Myrmica need very high humidity, so make sure you water those nests frequently, acryllic isn't known to be good with humidity haha nest humidity isn't drinking water, so its good that you offer them two water feeders + side of this setup, you can see and film them much better seeing this more close up footage, all those larvae with colored insides actually have those spots, but just not as big as the left one Rest in peace wall xD
@AntHolleufer3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I try to keep the humidity at 80% to keep them happy 😄 but yeah the setup is 100% better for viewing so yeah really nice of highTechAnts. The highTechAnts colony 🤔😂

I really love your channel! I will be putting on workshops this spring for kids in northern Alberta Canada, to teach them how to find ants, how to raise them, hoping to get some sponsorship from a supplier in Canada to reduce costs. Might have to order ant queens just to be sure the kids can finish the workshops with a queen, but also want to go queen hunting. We get lots of carpenter ants in fort McMurray. Love your channel

Ahh that’s a wonderful idea! There’s a store called por amor arts that makes ant products in Canada! You should contact them!

Mitmicas are stubborn diggers. When they have enough substrate to make their own nest, they won't move at all. This way my colony died in formicarium, where nest always was moist, but they stayed in outworld digged in substrate... I suggest you to use springtails to prevent mold in BIO formicariums.
@AntHolleufer3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that’s how it is sometimes. There where a ton of springtails in there but for some reason the mold was to powerful 😞

Good luck man. If you want more eggs, larvae, pupae and workers you should feed them more protein. Usually I feed them so much protein that they start rejecting it. And feed them a lot of honey (to keep them energised). And if you want to start a new Messor Barbarus colony you can buy one for 4€ (3,90€) (only Queen is 4€). You can buy some with workers, but they are more expensive. At ANSTORE- Buy ants and ant colonies from Southern Europe. I would advice you to buy one.
@AntHolleufer3 жыл бұрын
I have actually just got a messor barbarus colony 😄 but thanks for the advice. Will definitely feed them more protein 😄🙌🏻

I also had a someone big issue with molt with my setup. While I had made my setup ready, I decided to put it some pieces of driftwood. Strangly enough there was a lot of molt all around the wood pieces after a while after I watered the setup. So I decided to never ever put wood into my nests outworld nests. At least not if I plan to water the setup. Also the ants hadn't moved in yet so it's no issue at all
@AntHolleufer3 жыл бұрын
Yeah it could be that 🤷🏻♂️🤔 good thing you haven’t moved the ants in. That would have been very annoying 😅
@VarmintLP3 жыл бұрын
@@AntHolleufer well it was only on the top. And I haven't seen another outbreak yeat
@AntHolleufer3 жыл бұрын
Yeah okay. Hopefully it isn’t growing under the dirt
@VarmintLP3 жыл бұрын
@@AntHolleufer no. I think I removed the pieces of wood and then also some chunks of soil. I wanted to make sure that it's clean. I also left it to dry a lot so it should be fine. ;)

Perfect 😄 then it’s hopefully good 😌

Finally had the time to watch this video! Great video, sad you had to move them out. I expect you overwatered the setup way to much, causing the mold to grow. But I'm no expert haha.
@AntHolleufer3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the problem is myrmica needs really high humidity. There literally live in small ponds sometimes 😅🤷🏻♂️ but yeah water definitely the reason the mold grew so well

If you want to avoid mold, make sure to get a colony of Isopods + springtails inside your vivarium. Also wait for a vivarium to go through its molding phase before introducing ants into the setup. Usually after the first mold over the mold runs out of fuel and it’s safe for you to move an ant colony in
@AntHolleufer3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I did add springtails and Isopods. But head the thing about the first mold after letting the ants free 😕

Any species of fire Ants would be my dream but sadly they are illegal because they are new pests here in Australia and can still be eradicated but if they ever become wide spread among Australia I will be looking every day for a queen even know it will suck if the settle in Australia
@AntHolleufer3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that’s the thing. The Australian laws are quite strict if I remember correct. But who knows. Maybe they’re a and invasive colony right around the corner 🤷🏻♂️🤔

@Hackzor4043 жыл бұрын
Myrmica rubra are in fact semi-claustral, as they have smaller gasters they need to forage during the founding stages to be able to raise their brood
