Today we are going through this Monte Carlo we bought a few days ago off Marketplace. I'll be honest, I didn't do a lot of looking when we went to pick it up- I just knew I wanted it! So in the shop today we put it on the lift and PRAY that we didn't just overpay for a rusted piece of hot rod garbage.

I have a 1972 Monte Carlo with a 454 th400 combo and 2.73 rear gears. It cruises at 2500 rpm on the hwy at 75. My rear tires are 27.75 tall. Also does great burnouts.

Same frame as a similar vintage Pontiac Grand Prix. I had a 1970 GP with a 455 HO. What a tire fryer. Also, used to race a first gen Monte in street stock class at the local dirt track. Lots of guys did because they had better weight distribution with the engine setback compared to the Chevelle.

I’m on the side that says leave the drivetrain in the Monte, repair the rotten metal, fix up the suspension and drive it. Putting 550 hp in it still won’t make it nearly as desirable as it would the 57 or the Chevelle. Speaking of the Chevelle; you have enough winter projects this year. Why not just save that for next winter. You’ll have plenty of time to figure out a way to get it back to the new shop.

Graduation 68 so auntie Carlo was a new car when I was in my early twenties. You could get anything that you can get with a new car in a Monte Carlo even back then. I believe they're going to go up in value right along with everything else. Leave the 350 and enjoy it

Ya know, there were early SS Monte Carlo's. Some of those early Monte Carlo small block cars would stomp on the SS 454 Carlo's. My dad's did. I think those are so awesome, you should drop the dime and have it restored. Oh, and that Raptor would look so awesome pulling that Chevelle to your new home. 😊😊😊

I remember a friend had a 71 Monty in high school which in 75 was an absolute rot box no floors and both places you pointed out were pretty much gone. Major score for DD on this one. If it were mine, I'd go with an HEI, Performer intake and a sniper for drivability and reliability. I'd love to see it done right, not too many of these left and once they are gone, they're gone forever.

The bottom makes it all worth while. Solid car. She'll move along great with a big block. I thought the frames were longer umder the toe boards, same as grand prix, and maybe the 4 door chevelle, as the 4 door drive shafts are also 4" longer. Gotta say, I haven't even thought of that since the 90's lol

73-77 Montes and Chevelles were pretty much the same car. Only the first Gen Montes (70-72) didn't have the same body and frame as the Chevelles. Also about the gauges in the Chevelles. The SS's (at least up to 72, not sure about the 73-77s) had the round ones. The stock Chevelle-Malibu's had the single sweep-speedometer.

Dan this is the car you want to save if only for it's inevitable sharp price rise, because it's so clean it'll last as long as it takes, just as all the cool cars from that era are diminished from availability to low budget hobbyists, the marginal coolness cars will also become rare at any price as well. All that it takes is you fixing this car up to it's prettiest it's been since new and you'll have 200,000 people interested in a semi cool bargain basement project car which increases demand where almost none existed before. As more of this model are restored folks attending auto shows see these cars all dolled up and ask the usual questions how much for entry, parts availability, what does it cost to rebuild and how much time do you have in it? It only stays a bargain long enough to eat up the entire supply of low cost repairable units available then the fun begins as you watch 50% gains yearly as people realize that it was an early seventies muscle car, kind of swanky but pops wasn't easily outrun.
