Rescuing Tyranids - No Stripping Required!

This week I tackle a set of Tyranid models sent in by Mike W. The goal was to take a pretty good paint job and inject some life into it, taking them to the next level! No stripping this week, just using a few simple techniques to really push the paint job and create something that Mike will really enjoy. Thanks again for sending in these models Mike, this was a fantastic project and I truly appreciate the support!

If you would like to donate a mini to be rescued on the channel then please send me an email with the type of mini, pictures if you can, and a little bit about the history of the mini! Commissions are a big part of what keeps this channel going, I try and charge a fair amount, and in most cases, make a video to go along with the job. Not in all cases, but many. The type of commissions I am interested in are of a "rescue" nature. So something that you have had laying around, or something that you started, or someone started and didn't finish. If you want something new then I am still interested but please understand that if it doesn't fit within the theme of the channel then it probably won't get featured in a video.

Mikes GF did that for him? She's a keeper. Definitely a keeper. I love the way you can 'see' the next steps and end result before you paint. This sort of colour knowledge comes with practice and lots of it. Thanks for the great videos and tips !

A keeper for sure! Color knowledge definitely comes with practice, and a lot of mistakes, but having a good color wheel goes a long way to giving you mixes and hue, so for this video it was a matter of looking at the base color, finding out what paints make that color, and where to go value wise. My point is, practice is great, there’s no substitute, but having a tool that helps you get there can be just as invaluable :) maybe I should have included that in the video. If you want to learn about colors and how to get crazy good with them, check out NJM with Marco Frisoni, he’s an awesome guy and his videos blow my mind every time!!

The Broodlord and Mawloc probably came from the Start Collecting set along with 8 Genestealers. This color scheme is cool! Mike needs to hang on to this girlfriend! Your "upgrades" are awesome!

Totally agree that Mike's GF did a good job. My Nids aren't too far off in detail and complexity of paint scheme. That said, if I was to start adding to my Nids again I would invest in an airbrush setup. Painting sooooo many little models 100% by hand gets a bit mind numbing.

I did a squad of the little guys and it was super fast with the airbrush, definitely worth investing in for painting a ton of models really quickly!

Got a whole squad of Genestealers basecoated in 15 minutes with an airbrush. Best thing I ever got for the hobby.

Very cool video! Definitely a different sort of journey from your usual fare but I liked it. The final paint job is quite cool. Also, I have to say, while Mike W's girlfriend did not do much beyond base coating she did two amazing things for what I assume is a novice hobbyist: 1. She really cleanly built these models. and 2. She really cleanly painted a good color scheme on them. How awesome is it to give someone a gift of a model and have fully built and painted it for them? What a great gift.

Your turquoise color is incredible, and seems simple enough. I’d personally push the carapace further and glaze some darker blues into the creases. I’m not a fan of the way the black was done on these models, and I would have personally went with different color for the flesh. Big fan of your channel! Such an original concept and very helpful!

For final edge highlights I've had really good success using the Liquitex White Ink. It's really thin in consistency. Which is great because when doing those side brush edge highlights you wont run dry.

I recommend trying some warcolour white as well. I got the whites after listening to vince wax poetic about them and they are quite nice.

I think they are great! I’ve used them for a few projects now and they have been amazing through the airbrush. The colors are vibrant and mix really well, a little expensive, but there is a lot of paint in the bottles. I got mine from amazon in a bundle and it was considerably cheaper.

Glad you enjoy the content man, thanks :) I have a writing desk, pretty basic, but it’s wide, so I can fit some paint holders, lights, airbrush stuff, all on the same desk, so it works. I have a cutting matte down sometimes, under construction paper, so I don’t make a mess. I’d love to get a few of those ultimate table for gaming hobby desks, pretty pricey, but they look amazing!

How do you airbrush the ink? I have problems when I try to airbrush my daler and rowney ink (white). Thank you! Great vids!

Daler and Rowney white is one of the worst inks, it never seems to thin out, always leaves spots. I have been using it for a while now and didn’t realize it was the ink! I just switched to liquitex and it’s insanely amazing the difference! I’ve also been told that Vallejo white ink is even better than liquitex.

In this case it was a commission so I sent them back. Sometimes I will buy a model on eBay and then resell it after the video is done. Most of the time I keep the models to use for games.
