I’ve been buying and selling for 40+ years and even owned an Antique Mall for several years and I am still learning about a lot of stuff! I am also a CPA. The definition of fair market value (FMV) is as follows: FMV is the price at which a willing seller and a willing buyer, neither of which is under duress, agree to in a transaction. Therefore. Virtually every buy you make and every sale you make are at FMV. Whether the buyer or the seller has any comparative level of knowledge has no bearing on whether or not a transaction occurs at FMV.

Just a thought: aren’t Walmart, Costco, Target, etc. all resellers? The difference between them and folks like Kevin is that they are at the top of the food chain! I appreciate the online resellers like Kevin and the opportunity to purchase affordable items along with the thrill of the hunt for them! You keep doing you, Kevin!
@msunites29772 ай бұрын
Yes they are but they are called "Authorized Resellers" and that makes a BIG DIFFERENCE as they're margins of profit are nothing like what cottage sellers get, not even close. They also consign goods under NET Terms which again is a completely different ballgame. When you know the larger picture of hard goods manufacture, distribution and consumer commerce the two pretty much cannot be compared. There is far more dissimilar than similar and it's one of the reasons why "Retail Arbitrage," sellers who source at retailers is under assault. Walmart for example is not in the business of making independent or other sellers money. In fact, if Walmart sent employee's to Target Stores to buy with intent to resell for profit like cottage sellers do its against the law, its construed as a predatory business conduct and then some. Those cottage sellers activities have resulted in two matters pending: 1. The big players in retailers as well as well as distributorships, manufacturers AND even many Authorized Small Business sellers are seeking in the USA to have retail brick and mortar law applied to all US Internet Hard Goods Sales, new or used, doesnt matter. Those entities are also using the fact that they online have blurred internet and retail to the point of retail law being needed in Internet Sales. If retail law is applied to all Internet hard goods sales most sellers are out of business... They simply cant meet those standards more or less want expend the time to learn them. 2. The Shop Safe Act is looming sitting stalled in Congressional review. Whilst it aims to impact counterfeit goods the reality is it will impact just heaps of sellers whether they've counterfeit items or not be they new or used. Lawfirms representing the brands will make claims as is their right to do so and its completely up to the seller to prove legitimacy of any item made claim upon. How is a seller to do that? The manufacturers have no onus to provide a mechanism of proof authenticity and if purchased say at a retailer like Target that can open the seller up to a Predatory Business Conduct legal action via a State Attorney General, its up to a judge to determine legitimacy as those retailers consider the "Retail Arbitrage Seller" a competitor no matter where the resell said merchandise. Its up to the seller to try defend that against a State Attorney General and best of luck on that to be sure.
@WellnessWizdom2 ай бұрын
Technically, yes they are.
@adriennesmith-poch8572 ай бұрын
@@msunites2977 Wow! I learned something new today! Thank you for taking the time to explain.
@msunites29772 ай бұрын
@@WellnessWizdom Sure there are similarities and one could say same of someone with a yard sale, consignment shop or flea market vendor. But towards retailers its really quite different in mechanisms those mechanisms are so very different they are not comparable. Most retailers assets are the floor fixtures, equipment, brand and if they happen own the building which many dont. The merchandise is almost always consignment under Net Terms with Price Protection. They dont own "per se" what they are selling until such a point its sold. They pay the manufacturer's authorized distributorship(s) for merchandise under Net Terms. The retailer can return that merchandise under Price Protection Credit basically "Credit" towards other merch the distributorship carries within a fixed timeframe. The top third party sellers (25-35%) be that at eBay or Amazon or Walmart's open commerce platform are all Authorized Supply Chain. Its likely why Kevin mentions if he'd started all over again he'd be looking more to embrace supply chain. Everything you see in retail stores has a shelf life before its "delisted" by the manufacturer. At that point in time the retailers might have passed the timeframe of returning said merch for Price Protection Credit or perhaps have such a low inventory left of said item(s) its not worth the return logistics expense. So they slap in closeout isles. Usually most will return things like full unopened case lots. They go from say the Target Store back to the regional Target warehouse and then back to the distributorship. From there the merch is available to authorized sellers to get for fractions of the MSRP it was in retail. I used to buy items with $50-$80 MSRP per unit for $2.50-$3.50 each by the case lot. There was no need to hunt for merch, every week I get a list of whats available and just place my order and it arrive. A friend of mine for example is an authorized Dell computer resellers/refurbisher. On eBay alone he sells $3 Million a year Net in Laptops, about 120 a day average. He gets "Alienware" off lease CAD PC's as well and those he has to part out, video cards, memory, CPU's, Power supplys, Mainboards, Drives etc. on Amazon. The case shells are picked up by a scraper and he gets paid for that too. The Off lease laptops cost him $17 each. The largest Wargaming and Fantasy Gaming seller on eBay is a friend of mine. He does millions too annually at eBay and is authorized chain. Ok... Now after the "delisted" sales of said merch wane the manufacturers then look to surplus and wholesale or with some products will simply destroy them for reclamation and write off the manufacturer expense as loss if they can. There is no independent sellers that can compete against the unified authorized supply chain, its simply not possible.

One thing to consider is that it costs about $1 per mile to drive somewhere (vehicle, maintenance, gas, insurance), and it adds up. I remember when my family went to garage sales, and we could go up to 100 miles. I had someone offer me $5 for an item on Poshmark, and the commission at the time was $2.95 so I would make $2 while driving 12 miles to the post office. Then there’s the packing materials. Yes, it adds up, and I’m just trying to clear out an estate and pay my bills.
@bone_thrower2 ай бұрын
While it obviously costs to drive, I’m a bit skeptical of your $1/mile claim. There’s just absolutely no way that’s accurate. How do I know this? Glad you asked. I drive an average of 1000 miles/week. If it was costing me $1000/week my children would starve and we would be homeless. Also, ride share drivers get paid way less than $1/mile so if you were right there wouldn’t be a single Uber driver. Why would vehicle payments and insurance be factored into that? Insurance doesn’t charge by the mile and if for some reason you want to factor in the car payment, if your payment was $500/month and you only drove one mile, that one mile would cost $500. With your logic, the more you drive the cheaper the miles would become. You basically made a claim that can never be made. Some cars get 8 mpg and some get upwards of 60 mpg. Some have large low profile tires which are very expensive and some have basic standard sizes that are $45 each. Some people own their cars and some pay $1000/month. Maybe it costs you $1/mile but that’s not necessarily true for any other individual on the planet.
@deanna60422 ай бұрын
@bone_thrower, well she could factor in: oil changes, wear and tear on her tires, depreciation due to higher miles, and gas. Gas alone, @ $3/gal. @ 30miles per gal=$1.20. That comes straight out of your profit. So, how much profit do you think is fair to receive off of a $5 item? Given the circumstances.
@KennethKent-m3p2 ай бұрын
@@bone_thrower That figure, from auto experts, is actually outdated. Especially in the age of $40,000-$60,000 vehicles. If you drive over 1,000 miles a month, you pay more in auto insurance because there’s more risk. I know plenty of people who drive 40,000+ miles a year, and their insurance makes mine look cheap. They have to go through more maintenance issues in a year and so on. Look at other factors like how long you pay on the car (the suggestion has been made for 7-year car loans), the interest rate itself, and it all adds up. Pretty much anyone using their own vehicle for deliveries, rides and the like aren’t making as much as they think. They especially aren’t given the fact they may wear out their car before it’s paid for. It maybe immediate income, but when everything is considered, it’s not a good deal.
@KennethKent-m3p2 ай бұрын
@@deanna6042 That’s it exactly. The vehicle, interest, insurance, gas, oil changes…and it all adds up. Most won’t drive a car into the ground over 10-20 years, and you could always be in an accident that totals your relatively new vehicle, and you’re off to buy another one at today’s prices. We dismiss cars as a kind of fixed cost for a convenience.

It sounds to me no different than those door-to-door tradesmen who rip off unknowing pensioners. If they were happy with the price they paid, what does it matter if they only got $100 worth of work for the $10,000 that they paid? They are none the wiser, and the flipper/scammer is richer. Which is apparently okay with some of you. But it's the very definition of ripping someone off or exploiting them. I have been reselling on ebay for 25+ years before that swap meets and flea market booths, I am still surprised at the worth of some items. We have a short period of time to look through a hodge podge of items and if it is out of our wheel house we may have limited knowledge. The way I look at it is if the seller gives me a price and I am happy with it then it goes home with me. I have started to walk away when they give me a lower price if it is what I can live with then I buy it. My favorite time of day is when they say everything is half price! There are so many of us out here that appreciate the knowledge you share with us. The hater out there don't have a clue what we do or why we do it.

I have been watching your channel for awhile and have seen you be more than fair with people. I remember one time you were at an older ladies sale and you gave her more than what she was asking and you told her that if it turned out you made more than you expected you would give her more. A little time passed and you did make more than you expected and you gave her additional funds. When someone says you are not telling the truth - that person does not know you and is so far off the mark. You are a very good man and treat people more than fair. Don't listen to those bad mouthers - they are just looking for someone to pick on. Nothing they said is worth even repeating. Keep up the great work.

Item selling price has to be greater than purchase price + shipping + costs of aquisition + labor. Otherwise there is no point in buying it, because as a seller you're backward before you restart the car/truck. Gas where I am is over $3/gallon and wear and tear on a vehicle is NOT cheap. Food is stupidly expensive here. My time is not cheap, and yours shouldn't be either. Re: swung glass - prices are leveling out and may be dropping for the common ones. Sometimes you recognize something as being good, but don't know how good. I went to a rummage sale and found some Napier 1930s silverplated servingware this weekend. It had been sitting there for an hour. All I knew is that I never knew Napier made anything but jewelry. The sugar and creamer design is in the Rhode Island School of Design's museum. Resale prices range from $10 - $700 (crazy outlier) . Any other buyer could have done a 10 second search and found them, but must have walked right by. Every so often you get an OOPS. Those OOPS pieces can end up paying for the rest.
@OriginalNethead2 ай бұрын
PS - I'm a medically retired antique jewelry reseller. I can tell Napier jewelry on sight from a distance as often as not. Still didn't know these. Resellers and antiquers know things, but we don't know everything.

I always say the value I bring to buying your items is cash now, so you don;t have to list, ship, deal with ebay, deal with non payments, sunk cost etc. The one piece of advice I would give you would be when you make a big profit on an item maybe don't say what you paid. I'm sure resellers get a kick out of it but viewers who don't know what resellers go through may be turned off. Part of why I enjoy reselling and remind myself why I do what I do is because I like to think resellers keep a lot of things out of the trash. I have gone to many garage sales where people are just throwing perfectly good things away. I see many other upsides to reselling as well, although the idea of keeping things out of the holes in the ground is what originally got me going. People say that sourcing from goodwill is like stealing from the poor, but in my mind and opinion goodwill is reselling as well, legalities aside.
@MY_LIFE_LESSONS4 күн бұрын
People always tell me I am taking away from people in need when I buy at thrift stores. They ask me if I feel guilty buying something and selling for more. Ebay paid my daughter's college, my house and all my bills. So, no this is what I do for a living it is what feeds and clothes me and my family. People price their own items, and they put a price on their item that they can live with. So if they are not a reseller, they need to do their research before jumping down my throat.

I picked up a nice size lot of dvds/blurays, for a nice price at a yard sale that I happened to stumbled upon by accident, however, upon check of the movies, some of the cases were empty, some of the discs were in poor condition and some cases and discs were writting on with names etc. So they were donated to goodwill.

Kevin, you are an honest, caring, and wonderful person and you work so hard just to make a living for your family. Do not take what those people said to heart. It was very nice of you to give $5 each for the vases when you did not have to. I agree with the FMV idea. If the buyer and seller agree on a price, then that is what the item is worth. I have an accounting degree, so I know what it costs to do business. As far as Goodwill is concerned, I would also like to add that they are hurting the people who are poor and the elderly who are on fixed incomes by charging so much now. It used to be they could rely on Goodwill to clothe their families, but not so much now. For the poor who live in states with colder weather, it is even worse because there are no garage sales for many months of the year, so they cannot even do that, unless they buy all summer to cover winter, and who knows if the clothes will fit their children all winter? How can one guess what exact size your child will wear several months ahead or whether they will experience a growth spurt or not? I know this because I was once a single mother of 5 for many years. Anyhow, shake it off! Those people are mistaken.

I think the concept flippers don't quite get used to be called fairness. Here's a scenario to explain: An elderly woman is selling for $5 something you know is worth $1000. If you can gleefully take the deal without saying anything, guilt-free, you'll be a good flipper. If you have a conscience and can see how wrong it is, or would feel guilty about the cruelly uneven exchange, flipping is not for you. Basically, the goal of resellers is ripping people off. Some people can do that and others can't. But a "community" of such rip-off merchants obviously doesn't want to be honest about what it is they are doing. The same goes for regular burglars, shoplifters or looters who are caught -- you think they won't get angry at you and have excuses about their objectively wrong behaviour?
@TheFriskySquid2 ай бұрын
The driving and time are definitely huge costs that people don't consider when sourcing. Yes, sourcing is fun and it barely feels like a job most of the time, but at the end of the day you are tired and have to drive home (or even pay for a hotel if you are far away from home). This weekend I drove over 140 miles in one day, stopping many times along the way and that took 8 hours. I barely bought anything because the sales were picked over. But for $20 in gas and 8 hours of my time, the $200 of profit (before expenses) I expect is almost not worth it. And I skipped lunch to save money.

I have an eBay store and I get many customers that complain my prices are too high. Mine are not. I usually list most of my items from the average of selling costs from other listings similar to mine. They don’t understand the drive time, gas money, etc. I had buyers that I had to block because they argued so much about prices. We are talking amounts between $20-$50. I travel locally on a regular basis to find my items. Sometimes I do go out of town but rarely. We as sellers do the leg work in finding treasures that other people can enjoy. My favorite part of my whole business is finding my items in the wild.

I wish I had the energy and commitment of resellers. I know that the expense of gas, cleaning, pricing materials, storage etc. cuts into all profits. I also am not organized enough to keep up with the price paid, price sold inventory which is so necessary for successful shipping of sold items. People just do not factor all of this in. Think of how much profit a store like Belk must make on items when they are able to offer 75% or 90% off and still profit! Keep learning and reselling. Forget about those who are not willing to put the work in and yet will criticize those who are.

Good educational video for non-resellers. eBay prices are not profit and selling in a short term local garage sale will always be less than selling on a global market when you can sit and wait for the right buyer.
