A lot of people know about RE2 on N64, but few people talk about Starcraft 64 - something I think is even more impressive. Not only did they fit an entire PC game on an N64 cart, they included the full Brood Wars expansion (basically a 2nd full game) on the same cart! And if that's not enough, they somehow added split screen multilayer (for an RTS game on console!) and FMV cutscenes too! Not even the PS1 got a Starcraft port. It's just insane how they made that game work.

Except it had a lot more unacceptable compromises than RE2 did on the N64. At least with RE2, the game's true game data is literally between 500-700MB. The only reason why RE2 had two discs on the PS1 was due to Capcom devs making some miscalculations on their part with the game's coding, audio data, and leftover files, hence why they need it to duplicate most of the game on another disc at the last minute, hurting their budget when it came to creating and shipping copies of the game at release. Ports after the PS1 version all had only one disc/cartridge as the devs who ported the game managed to fix the bloated problem that the original devs had.

@@RGT85 Impressive, definitely. Impossible is being a bit dramatic. Also the PS1 FMV was absolutely compressed. Uncompressed video is huge and the PS1''s disc read speed and capacity is too limited for this to be practical. The PS1 contains a component called the MDEC which stands for Motion Decoder. It handles fast decompression of image data which is how the FMVs work. The vast majority of the data on the disc is video and audio which can be both compressed and down sampled to save space. It was very common in the late 90s to find PS1 "rip" games for download that cut out all the FMV and streamed audio so that it could be a much smaller file and more comparable to cartridge sizes. It demonstrates where most of the disc capacity budget goes. DreamCast's piracy scene had the issue of GD-ROMs storing more data than a CD-R could fit and would use the technique of cutting certain data out or down sampling it to save enough space to fit. RE2 on N64 is impressive because they did the work to make it fit and decided it was commercially viable to produce it using the largest cartridge rom size they could. Certainly unexpected and unusual.

The N64 did some amazing things. The Star Wars games were awesome, and Zelda was mind blowing. Just shows that when developers (true developers who take limitations as their challenge) knuckle down and put their souls into it, they can accomplish anything! And the N64 was just awesome.

Went thru all the scenarios with both characters, unlocked all the special items and costumes. Unlocked Hunk mode and Tofu mode! Its one of the few games where the Expansion Pak greatly improves the graphics. And who could forget about combining it with the GameShark Pro, so many wacky codes to alter the game and make it even more fun. As many did i foolishly sold my n64 stuff as the next console came along, but when i re bought an n64 about 10 years ago, i absolutely had to get re2 again.

I too like the tank controls as well as the modern controls. I can't wait to see what the analogue 3d will do to these games if any upscaling is done at all. up scaling definitely makes games look way better, but if the resolution of the TV/monitor goes up, it just might be to preserve. LIke PSP for example, stretched on a big screen looks like crap, but at 10x scaling it looks perfect as it should, but not improved in quality but preserved, if the resolution was already high and then it was upscaled, it will have improvements. So that's why I really wonder how the analogue 3d will be.

RGT another unbelievable port was legend of dragoon! From ps1 version to ps3 psp psn network version! Originally the game consists of 4 discs and is about 2.2gb, where as the ps3 psp psn version is only 1.3gb. Thats pretty cool tbh, but whats really wild is the ps4 psn version is almost 10gb! In my opinion its the best version graphically however if u dont mind a little pixels the ps3 psp psn version saves you space ultimately! Its quite wild what certain companies have done to port games or rework them to different sizes to fit better or have higher graphics. Pretty wild in my opinion the games been reworked 3 times atleast yet hasnt been remastered or remade in todays graphics! This is one of my favorites growing up as a kid and should ve remade! Hopefully 1 day it does!

Claire A/Leon B/4th Survivor P.S. It was the Dual Shock PS1 version via S-Video for me as a kid...and then the GameCube port via component cables after that came out.

This was the version of RE2 I had. The cart itself was physically heavier than any of my other N64 games.

Played this game with friends back when it was new and even then we were amazed that they were able to fit the game onto the N64. This and Street Fighter Alpha 2 on the SNES. Both marvels of technology

I wonder if they could've allowed you to skip the door loading screens or if those were still essential to make it all work?

Capcom is usually really good with giving Nintendo fans quality ports. I like to refer to the Street Fighter Alpha 2 port for SNES. That port is actually amazing. So it's not a surprise that they would do the same with other major franchises.

I owned this version of RE2! Loved how you could change the blood to green or blue! I only beat the A scenario once & didn't play the B scenario, as i wasn't aware of how easy it is to avoid Mr X.

I loved it more on the 64 than any other system. Just because they fit everything in the cartridge amazes me. Cost me 55 quid which was higher than any game at the time in 2000 for a 64 game. I saved up for weeks for that.

Where doom was done with total blackmagic for the snes, RE2 is indeed done with blackmagic for N64. Also, understand games who run their games native from a disc, has the same data multiple times spread around the disc for quick acces and less time of searching for the sectors the data should be in. And with that, sizes of ps1 games could be way way smaller.

It’s a gem for sure. I bought some ratty RE2 carts on eBay, painted the shells black and placed new stickers on-black on black looks the part!

And you know what the crazy thing is? One of the devs said they could've done an even better job with the compression if they'd had more development time, but they had to make their launch date.

Oh I remember when this came out! I was overwhelmed with Joy. Although I owned a PS and had played and finished the game, I had to have this version and play it on my favorite console at the time.

Cartridges had the ability to save without a memory card was a main factor for me switching. When I did get my PlayStation and a memory card tho it was game over.
