A lot of people know about RE2 on N64, but few people talk about Starcraft 64 - something I think is even more impressive. Not only did they fit an entire PC game on an N64 cart, they included the full Brood Wars expansion (basically a 2nd full game) on the same cart! And if that's not enough, they somehow added split screen multilayer (for an RTS game on console!) and FMV cutscenes too! Not even the PS1 got a Starcraft port. It's just insane how they made that game work.

Except it had a lot more unacceptable compromises than RE2 did on the N64. At least with RE2, the game's true game data is literally between 500-700MB. The only reason why RE2 had two discs on the PS1 was due to Capcom devs making some miscalculations on their part with the game's coding, audio data, and leftover files, hence why they need it to duplicate most of the game on another disc at the last minute, hurting their budget when it came to creating and shipping copies of the game at release. Ports after the PS1 version all had only one disc/cartridge as the devs who ported the game managed to fix the bloated problem that the original devs had.

@mottzilla485814 күн бұрын
@@RGT85 Impressive, definitely. Impossible is being a bit dramatic. Also the PS1 FMV was absolutely compressed. Uncompressed video is huge and the PS1''s disc read speed and capacity is too limited for this to be practical. The PS1 contains a component called the MDEC which stands for Motion Decoder. It handles fast decompression of image data which is how the FMVs work. The vast majority of the data on the disc is video and audio which can be both compressed and down sampled to save space. It was very common in the late 90s to find PS1 "rip" games for download that cut out all the FMV and streamed audio so that it could be a much smaller file and more comparable to cartridge sizes. It demonstrates where most of the disc capacity budget goes. DreamCast's piracy scene had the issue of GD-ROMs storing more data than a CD-R could fit and would use the technique of cutting certain data out or down sampling it to save enough space to fit. RE2 on N64 is impressive because they did the work to make it fit and decided it was commercially viable to produce it using the largest cartridge rom size they could. Certainly unexpected and unusual.

I too like the tank controls as well as the modern controls. I can't wait to see what the analogue 3d will do to these games if any upscaling is done at all. up scaling definitely makes games look way better, but if the resolution of the TV/monitor goes up, it just might be to preserve. LIke PSP for example, stretched on a big screen looks like crap, but at 10x scaling it looks perfect as it should, but not improved in quality but preserved, if the resolution was already high and then it was upscaled, it will have improvements. So that's why I really wonder how the analogue 3d will be.

Good times! I had both versions of RE2 back int the day. I'm just a die hard ps1/ps2 fanboy. Love my RE2 Dual Shock edition!
