I grew up with it for sure, 31 now. Legit had it since I can remember. These kind of demake videos either fail really hard due to one or two tech impossibilities that kill immersion for me OR they perfectly nail it. tbh the motion blur style, the bloom at 0:15, a bunch of things just pull me out from it being a PS1 thing and not some weird hybrid dreamcast-windows 98-saturn thing

The first Resident Evil then on the PS1. That was the first time I met a zombie, and it was terrifying. I was 12 years old, playing this new game, exploring and somewhat nervous. I was near the beginning after the dining room. I come around the corner of this hallway and see a guy crouched over someone lying down. “Oh, what’s going on here” I think, only to hear the sound of a bone crack, and then I see blood pooling from the one lying down. “Oh, he’s obviously dead”. Then the one crouched over turns his head slowly to the left, and these lifeless blued eyes, blood covered mouth, and decaying flesh are all I see. Then this thing gets up and starts moving towards me. “Fuck that” I yelled, and I ran out of there so fast back to the dining room (it was my safe area). Was hanging in the dining room with the fireplace, and I think “Whew, I’m safe now.” Then a door creaks opens, and in limps that fucker from before. “Ahhhhhhh!” I turned off that PlayStation so quick. That was my first encounter with a zombie as a sheltered 12 year old finally playing his first horror game.

I think this is the most interesting generation to look back on because it was at a real middle point between realism and abstraction. Lots of really interesting choices made out of necessity. Whereas now you dont need to worry about achieving realism, and in the very early days devs generally went for abstraction.

Can you explain the process of how you actually make these? I'm just curious how you get these to look so authentic yet modern at the same time

He reduced the number of polygons. Every model (mesh) is build of triangles, quads and n-gons. The more vertices, the more rounded and detailed mesh can be. Some programs like Blender have function of automatic reduction of vertieces. You ajust one setup and get new model with worst quality and lesser amount of vertieces. Albedo Maps also look like they were edited in some program like Photoshop. If you reduce size of a textures you get worse quality looking model. At some point they start looking like something out of Minecraft, cause you can count pixels. He deleted also normal maps, metallic maps and diffusion maps.

The old lady's face omg 😂 and the wobbly textures. We really came far in terms of visual presentation. But I really appreciate this old school look, too. I definitely would check out an old school adaptation of resi village if it had an mode to toggle between the graphics modes or so. 😅

I was gonna say. Ok it's pixellated, but no way I remember any games having really sound design (good soundtracks yes, but not FX and voiceover), or direction/framing as good as this lol. Maybe MGS is the best I can think of on ps1. Usually it was an FMV sequence whenever they needed to use good art direction
