I work with solvents all day in a lab, and just a little safety tip. Disposable masks won't protect you against vapor/gases, it is essentially a very fine pore particle mask. For gases you want a respirator mask, something like a cheap one that is used for painting will suffice.

I bought the Anycubic wash and cure station when they offered it for $159. I have an Elegoo Mars and the wash and cure has simplified the post processing so much it's worth the increased price. Before I saw this on a different youtube channel, I was cosidering the Prusa CW!, but it is $700. Thank you Anycubic.

Like Joel I'm more excited about the washing/curing station. It comes at a great price and it does everything you need to post process your prints. I only have Prusa's CW1 to compare it to and this machine looks like it does the same job even with design improvements (the magnetic impeler is part of the container assy, I understand that Prusa's design choice tends to malfunction due to misalignment). I'm getting one of this as soon as it's available again on Amazon. Thanks Joel. Ohh by the way, your way of doings these videos is really refreshing and fun without preventing you from pointing out all the important details about whatever you're analyzing or explaining. Greta job!

This is looking good. The only issue I see is that they used acrylic in a system that uses a lot of isopropyl alcohol. Spilling or getting any on the spinning plate could cause it to crack.

The Lucio model probably failed because you oriented it flat on the build plate. Unlike FDM, mSLA has some extreme suction issues when lifting the platform for the next layer. Because of this, you'll want to minimize the maximum continuous cross-sectional layer outline. If you start with a big flat circle, you may get good adhesion to the plate, but you'll also have extreme suction. And, you risk pulling the layers apart and warping. Better to angle the base at 45 degrees so the individual slices are much smaller. Also, one thing you may not have considered is that you don't actually need to put the holes on the +Z side of the model (mini joel's head). Because each layer leading up to the closed body is a ring, you'll be draining freely all the way until the end where it caps it off. So you can put the holes in a more obscure place (like the soles of the feet) and then just turn the model upside down during washing. The resin will flow out during washing as long as there's holes that the IPA can flow into.
@matthewbrockman7604 жыл бұрын

Looks like a good "starter" package for someone who wants to get into resin printing. The larger size of the washing station really helps to keep the price (effectively) lower since it can also be used with some larger printers as a person steps up their game. Cool. Thanks Joel and Sean!

@6:30: Magnetic Stirrer. I know it should sound fancy or ingenuitive. Nah....magnetic stirrer. And for regular setups the part that spins at the bottom of the beaker is called a 'pill'. Bro, I also want to say that you do an excellent job of explaining how these things work and MOST IMPORTANTLY, the safety PPE that is required. I do this for a living and maintain 15 large scale polymer printers for a jewelry manufacturer. I'm constantly chasing people down who are handling these parts and making sure they're not in contact with the wet material. What's even worse than that is the dust created from support removal from the cured part. If you have lots of support structures that are removed post-cured the dust that's created is almost ALWAYS carcinogenic. NOBODY TALKS ABOUT THIS!! So be careful with that stuff. Wear an even BETTER mask when cutting off supports using your dremmel. Rig up a shop-vac hose right next to your hands while cutting through the supports and use ALL of the filters provided inside your shopvac. In a perfect world your shopvac would be outside so that any dust creeping past the filters are released outside. Rant = over.

To be honest i was just about to click order but the visible resolution in the print is a no go. Add a better screen and it would be awesome for mini figurine printing. For the cure station add a 3 digit, 7 segment type display and a rotary encoder instead of the click to select timer. Upgrade the hinges of the container lid so it has proper hinges instead of the flexible hinges that will break. If it got there upgrades it would be a killer setup at around $450-500

There is also always the Anycubic Photon without the zero, it has a bigger build area than the zero (6.5cm narrowest side instead of 5cm) and 1440p (2.5K) resolution, and costs a little more than this. Actually it's more or less identical to Mars spec wise, which also has a 1440p screen. Anyway both should be kept in mind, as prices fluctuate. The Zero is more like an exercise in making the barest cheapest thing that could possibly work, and finding that it is, surprisingly, not quite entirely junk, but unsurprisingly, has quality drawbacks for only a very moderate price advantage. Also bigger Anycubics are available as a discounted bundle with the curing station, so that can be helpful.

The delamination was probably because of the suction forces on the large base. If you do not make large areas hollow or print them in an orientation that minimizes surface contact with the FEP, they create a lot of suction on the FEP. Also, when you hollow a model, you have to put a hole on the side facing the build platform so that the suction forces can be released, otherwise you risk similar issues, or for the model to be ripped right off of the supports.

Thanks, Joel. I just recommended this printer setup to my local gaming shop. You rock and high five from Tacoma, dude. Be safe and well.
@kevinroosa13154 жыл бұрын
Rotate the Lucio model so that the base is slanted upwards. There was probably too much suction causing it to delaminate. Add additional supports around the edges of the base so it doesn't warp.

@zemerick4 жыл бұрын
They recommend 20-25c, which is 66-77f. Down to 15c can work, especially once it gets started as the printing heats the resin. So, 72 isn't needed, but 50 is definitely low and just asking for problems.
@zemerick4 жыл бұрын
@John Chrysostom Rev 3:9 Actually the bulk of the heating comes from the quite exothermic reaction of the UV curing. I own and run an SLA printer. It definitely warms the resin once it gets going. Try not to be so condescending when you don't know much about something. ( PS: The LCD has nothing to do with the UV lights. Those LEDs actually suck up around 20-30w, though they are too far from the resin to provide any warming. )

I'm with you on this Theodore. I had a bunch of seemingly random delamination issues printing between 65 and 70 f. Then I rigged a little heater inside my elegoo Mars and set it to 30c. The wash and cure station is a great and solid product with a good price for sure. Makes handling and postprocessing resin prints finally much more safe, comfortable, efficient and less messy. The printer obviously suffers from a far too low resolution LCD which shows on the surface of the prints as visible layers, making it unsuitable for high detail miniatures or jewellery, which require perfect smooth surfaces. The Phrozen shuffle mini offers better quality and quicker print speeds for a similar price. So one hit and one miss for Anycubic.

Nice review Joel! The wash and cure station sure is on my wishlist, but the low resolution screen on the Photon Zero was a bit of a disappointment in my opinion. The lower resolution was visible on the prints :( With a better screen (additional cost) the Zero would be a nice machine to have. I like that it is so small, and I rarely need a big build volume
@zemerick4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, a better screen is probably about the same price. The standard one used for 3d printing is ~$20 for a single unit, with free shipping! The build volume is definitely too small. The standard 64x117mm is already well on the small side and often requires shrinking prints quite a bit. With the low detail of this printer, you can't really afford to shrink things much either.

What I have found while printing with a resin printer is that when you are printing items with a large flat base (like the Lucio you printed) flat on the print surface you tend to get a de-lamination or separation from the print surface. To combat this what i have done is angle the print so that you a greatly reduced chance a failure. It should go with out saying at this point you want to look over the print in the software and make sure the print is properly supported seeing as you can not print over nothing. Otherwise it will get stuck to the membrane in the resin tank and and potentially damage the surface.

Definitely do. This printer sucks compared to basically all of the others which are only a little bit more expensive. I mean, the main point of SLA is the detail level...which this thing gives up. The main con is the small print size, which this printer goes even smaller. They didn't even switch to a monochrome display. It's like they tried to make the single worst SLA 3d printer to date.

Just dawned on me, the problem you had with the test cube file was probably because it was sliced for the regular Photon. They just put the stock test files on the usb without replacing with one sliced specificly for the newer printer. This seems to happen often with the various printer makers. This is particularly important for newer users to be aware of as it can make them think something is wrong with their printer. Or that they did something wrong. Anyway, just a thought.

I don't really understand why the Zero exists. The Photon (not S), is only 50-70 monies more expensive than the Zero, and has MUCH better XY resolution. @@GhostLugia No problem. I've run both and not seen a significant difference in print quality between the two. I like the Photo S for the dual lead screws on the Z, but the Mars open design is a little bit easier to work on. I think you'll be happy with either. The Prusa machine is a little better quality component wise and probably has a bit more longevity when it comes to the electronics and component life, but obviously is more expensive. It's all in what you have to spend and how much you want to invest in the technology. Much like FDM, you can get really great prints out of a super cheap machine these days and the quality only really goes up once you start putting better components into it. With resin, much like FDM, the more time you spend dialing in your slicer settings and refining your post print processing, the better the quality gets and you'll see bigger improvements in playing with the slicer and curing settings than changing an MSLA screen or a to liner rails instead of V slot extrusions on an FDM.

Washing/curing station is nice. Would like to get one soon. In the mean time though, my Sonic jewelry cleaner with foil lined box and UV lamp is a nice alternative. It'll get me by til I get an actual CW station.

Hey Joel! The reson the Lucio model split between the layers is because the suction effect against the FEP film in the tank. Am I right to assume that you sliced the model flush to the buildplate? Try to tilt it with a 30 degree angle and with support under it. It should do the trick! 😁 Love your work

I noticed that you never addressed the monkey in the room, removing the supports on the Spiderman Models. Both still had the supports on after washing and curing and I've always been told, and always done myself, to remove the supports prior to curing. That being said, I do want that wash and cure station. You also didn't mention was % iso-alc to use, the purer the better.

I guess if fully cured they might be easier to snap off with fingers, but uncured (soft) would be my preferred time to remove them with some snippers then sand and remaining contact points after the cure.

I almost bought this printer for $99 on black friday when I remembered you made this video. So I ended up-selling myself on the plain Photon with much higher resolution for $169.

55 to 60 degrees is far too cold, from what I've heard on another video ( I think it was on Uncle Jessy's channel). Ambient air temp in the room should be 70 degrees plus, preferrably 75 or so, otherwise your prints will randomly fail. That could be the cause of your delamination. Maybe try a space heater near the printer.

You're supposed to loosen the locking nut on the build plate enough to slip the forked part of that bracket in the gap, then tighten the build plate nut again and then attach the bracket to the washing station.

Nope, not on this one. I tried and that’s not it.

Yup, the bottles usually say right on them 20-25c, which is 65-77f. It's very important.

Just a pre-warning the Photon Zero has the FEP film attached to the holder, which means it costs more to replace down the track.
