Demonstration Only - Full mixing and pouring.
One of my Mystics resin pieces with mica and acrylic paint colorants. I found some framed prints in a secondhand store and re purposed them. Glass was cleaned and the back masked off with blue painters tape. This is the second in the planned set.
Stay safe and take appropriate safety measures when working with resin and pigment powders.

Why put all the black on the glass if the back is already black? If it was just color wouldn't it standout more against the background? Beginner question.
@crisscross104

Black paint is never really as black as resin black. The black on the base forms a nice shadow under the other colours. You can colour the base any colour you want

i have small framed mirrors , could i use them the same as i would use clear glass ? thank you
@crisscross104
@crisscross104 5 жыл бұрын
Harold. Smaller mirrors do work if you clean and prep them properly. A word of caution though. Your resin will flex if you have large temperature fluctuations in the spots you put these. That flex may cause delamination or worse case shatter your mirror. While I did this and it worked resin is better on a more stable base.

If you seal the back side of your glass in the frame you can do the resin while the glass is in the frame and it is not as messy. Less work for you in the end.

I did these quite early in my resin playtime ......these days I don't think this is the safest bet on frame glass. Resin is powerful and can crack thin glass. Just test all your surfaces first

Hi Chris, beautiful piece as always. t the 20:13 mark you said you forgot to put the Isopropyl Alcohol in the micas. What would it be the alcohol purpose?
@crisscross104
@crisscross104 7 жыл бұрын
The iso alcohol just things the mica/resin mix just a bit and the different densities help with the lacing effect.

Hi Chris I really love your work. Is it possible to dirty pour micas or will they just blend together?
@crisscross104
@crisscross104 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you. When I dirty pour I use clear as the bottom layer and when I add the other colours I try to put them next to rather than into each other. the moment you start to move them they will blend as the mica floats through the clear resin. So yes you can dirty pour them, just try not to manipulate them too much.

The first one had some silver mica to give a highlight. In this one I leave some clear to show the black board underneath. It fools the eye and gives visual depth without the need for multiple pours. I do similar in normal mystics.

your work is lovely,did you tape around the edge of the glass,and do you need to treat or do anything to the glass before pouring resin on to it ?
@crisscross104
@crisscross104 7 жыл бұрын
No I taped the underside but not the edges. I am quite frugal with resin so there is not a lot of spillover
@crisscross104
@crisscross104 7 жыл бұрын
Because the piece will be held in by the frame I was not concerned with any separation. If you wanted this to free hang I would have primed the glass either by light sanding or putting a layer of clear gloss medium or like to give the resin purchase. Personally I think this glass in these prints is too cheap and fragile to hang outside the frame.

@crisscross104
@crisscross104 7 жыл бұрын
Have a play with it and see what sort of results you get. The mica acts differently through the black (or any) coloured resin than it does in the clear so the results can be just as stunning.

Are you not worried for the resin to get stucky or dry when you use the hair dryer.? How long time do you have to do all the pouring?
@crisscross104
@crisscross104 7 жыл бұрын
No the hairdryer is only used to manipulate the resin. You have about 20mins before the bonding process starts to set. Each resin will have instructions on the working time.

Lovely! I'm asking about the tape being covered with resin and then you removed it. what stage did you remove and was it difficult as it was really resined over? Thank you!
@crisscross104
@crisscross104 6 жыл бұрын
The tape is on the underside of the glass. Keep it as clean as you can by running a stir stick around the underside edge a few times during the first hour of curing. The next day you can remove the tape. If it is a bit tricky then gently heat the tape with a heat gun or hairdryer. The adhesive will lift and you can remove easily.

How do you keep your resin from hardening in the cups. I tried this and my colors started getting tacky really quickly so I had to rush
@crisscross104
@crisscross104 3 жыл бұрын
There are a couple of things to keep control off. Firstly understanding the open time you have with the resin you are using and learning how to manage that time, secondly each paste or paint may have too high a moisture content that will cause a faster reaction and lastly get yourself a digital thermometer and monitor the temp of your resin. Most important of these is to understand the time frame you have and to be organised to work with in it.

Hi Chris, this is beautiful. Can I ask, when you framed the piece does the resin surface face outwards or is it facing the backboard and what you see in the frame being the underside of the glass?

Hi Julie. The resin faces outwards. There are clear spots where you see through the resin and through the glass to the black backboard giving another visual layer of depth.

Thks 😄 I am not wedded to a particular brand of resin but buy when I can find coupons and savings. It is a low viscosity resin that flows quite nicely. So many differing opinions on brands of resin so I tend to learn how to use the one I have going and make it work for me. Some need more heat, some need more time and others cure super fast.

Teri, A big part is to have your environment as dust free as you can before you start. I then have a range of food covering nets that I got from the Aussie equiv of a dollar store. These are like little umbrellas that I open to cover my pieces. My work is small enough to fit in most of them.

Good question. I have never tried. The issue would probably be how well they disperse in the medium you are using. Many of the old pigments were sources from natural elements. I would encourage you to give it a go and do some tests. Check the longevity and strength of the colour. Put some test pieces out in the sun and see if they degrade.
