Austin sent me a chunk of Ponderosa Pine Bark back in May of 2019. I then decided to spend the entire month of January locked in a struggle for my very survival with this project.

I first offer them to Mrs. Brown and she decides if they will be allowed in the house. Charcoal bowl, Wormwood bowl, Primative Pear bowl and Milliput bowl are currently inside bowls. All the rest live in a box in the shop.

@@peterbrownwastaken How dry was the bark when you started? I am wondering because resin has a hard time displacing water. If it still has moisture you could probably put a piece in the vacuum chamber and leave it for the water to boil out.

Bark wont want to stabilize because as trees develop secondary bark, it ends up being filled with a waxy substance, so all the tracheids or fibers that one would expect to fill with resin, like normal wood, behave and are physiologically different, there isnt really pitting to allow for lateral transfer, and therefore resin filling, as well as bark lacking a secondary cell wall, meaning it is far weaker than sapwood because theres not nearly as much structural components and instead theres more lignin and hemicellulose, the biggest barrier in stabilizing has to be the suberin that fills the bark with waxy and fatty material and stops water and air flow... The ponderosa pine bark is also so thick because of fire adaptation, truly beautiful way to capture the structure of softwood bark. Im a forestry student, I like trees

This will probably get buried, but just in case you see it Peter. I had some cactus juice that got sucked into my vacuum pump, and it cocked it up. The resin cures with the heat inside the pump and with the oil, and sticks to all the parts inside the pump. I had to pull my pump apart, scrub it all, and even then it's still not pulling as good of a vacuum as it used to. Change the oil on the pump if you haven't already.

What a beautiful piece. I'm so glad you were able to make something out of it, but I hope next January you remember not to use resin.

This turned out beautiful. Somehow the most beautiful work comes from a piece that gives us the most headaches. But, I love how your work brings out the beauty in natural things that would otherwise be discarded. Keep it up.

I like how your wife is just a dedicated and panics just as much as you do when something goes wrong. That is quite a strong bond you got there my guy.

I cannot WAIT until I can get my own Lathe. We're going to be having twins and I wanted to make some furniture for their rooms. Little projects like this will tide me over until they get here. Thanks for sharing!
