So cool. My 15 year old son is repairing all his friends boards and wants to start making his own. I can't wait to show him this video tomorrow.

I sometimes do a foam resin stain like this for a few reasons. The biggest reason is beacause you cant get a look like that with paint. Paint will almost always (at least in my experience) get muddy when you mix multiple colors like that. The other big reason is that you get a better bond in the glass job using resin for color vesus paint.

Thanks Mike- That's the info I needed. I do cutlaps on all my boards, so no worries there. Still trying to decide on doing the foam stain or just going the color in the lam.....Hmmmmm.

hey I have a question. do you let the resin you use build up on the floor and if you do can you ship me some lol. I am a wood turner and I would love to make somethings out of your left over resin.

Would love to see a photo of finished board. Are colors as bright and vibrant as if done in lamination? When laminating bottom do you do a cut lap on top at edge of color?

Great work... And the best use for crocs ever! I'd love to know what pigment you use to tint your resin. I've heard of people using acrylic paint, is this viable?

Since I would be doing the whole nose(both sides) with a foam stain, have you run into issues with the tape pulling up the color off the foam when removing tape?

Looks like a California sunset.. You could just as well be on the beach or sitting on your board waiting for the next wave and watching the sun go down...
@josephvargas74092 жыл бұрын
Is there any way you could do this over just a strip of the board? Like say a maybe 2 foot section going across the board? Or must it be the whole thing?

Most people use fiberglass when working the lam coat. What do you call that?

One thing that's puzzled me is durability of the resin. Good test for it on a surf board :) Floors iv'e no idea. Is it rock hard or brittle when set?

Hey Mike! I liked your video!!! Can you tell me how much resin you used and what catalyst % did you use? Im looking to foam stain a board tonight. :)
@briantrend12634 жыл бұрын
Ashley young about 325 ml resin as you don't have to go over the rails so less resin. any hardner MEKP will do, use 3grms. if its cold use 5 or 6g's. anything more than that call the fire dept. and a dalmation wearing a hat with " fire chief" on it will arrive pronto!
@briantrend12634 жыл бұрын
and don't forget your resin clodhoppers
@tenover11 жыл бұрын
So that's just a foam stain, right? Never done one, but would like to try. Just catalyze the resin as normal, stain, let kick and then glass the board clear over the top? I'm looking to make the nose area of my board an opaque orange and the rest all clear....Both sides. Will a foam stain color be "bright" under 8oz. volan?

the tape wont pull off cured resin so no worries there. painted boards are a different story though when it comes to tape pulling off color! Now i wanna see this thing!
@mikep958611 жыл бұрын
Hey Scott, glad you liked the video. If your wanting to do a small portion of your nose with color than ya resin foam stain is a good option. And I do it just like you said. In my experience with volan there will always be a slightly greenish hue but it wont be enough to over power a bright orange. Make sure you do cutlaps though or it will look real bad.

Sorry to show my ignorance as a beginner but why can't you freelap clear resin and cloth over it? Is that always just a bad idea with color?
@seanwarers84838 жыл бұрын
Not a bad way to do it if you Dont mind weight....why not do it when your laminating the deck? Even if it's just a deck/glass 4oz inlay??
@mikep95868 жыл бұрын
I don't have to bother with cutting the cloth this way. the added weight is so minimal. if you think about it, there will actually be less resin used when laminating after a foam stain because the foam has already soaked in some resin. making it less porous than before. Also when your doing colors while doing a lamination it is more challenging to keep the colors from getting muddy because your also making sure to work the resin into the cloth.

???... so I guess the whole rails are masked, then fibre glass laid, epoxy glass rainbow magic, then scalpel around the masking tape line to leave just the deck cloth??? And then do another layer of cloth that actually wraps the rails with clear epoxy on top??? Or maybe there was a glassed layer already, then the coloured deck on top, and then just hot coat on top. Not sure, but impressed with the result.
@markmccall62735 жыл бұрын
Oh wow, just realised it's just a foam stain. You live and learn. Means the first lamination won't bond as strongly I guess, as the EPS is already sealed and no longer porous. Still looks incredible though.
@mikep95865 жыл бұрын
After this I just glass the board regular. Then I put a pin line on the seem of the color on the rails
