Resin Pin Line Tutorial

There is so much more to a smooth pinstripe than this video shows... What grit do you sand the hot coat to? It makes a difference when you burnish the tape to the sanded surface. I used 220, wet for a clean surface with good hazy finish. Rather than a pencil line, I used the tip of an Xacto blade, set into the same tool. Just make sure the scratch is within the tape or resin will bleed under the tape, along the scratch. What tape do you use? I found out the hard way that cheap masking tape doesn't seal, the adhesive is resin soluble. The green stuff works well, forget the 3M number. Besides razor blade burnishing the tape to the sanded hotcoat, is there a sealer used to minimize resin creep under the tape? I very thinly fingerpainted clear UV lam and flashed it with some sun; the lam set and sealed the tape edge so no resin creep under the tape. This is the biggest source of grief when you're pinlining. How hot (how much catalyst) to set off the resin? You want the resin to fully cure (pigmented resin resists curing) but no too quick so the wax doesn't have time to rise and seal the surface. If the wax doesn't rise, the pinline may not fully cure. At worst, the finish coat will partially dissolve a gummy pinline and it'll smear to hell and gone. Anyone still using cobalt accelerator? Fiberglass Hawaii refused to sell it to me. Something about a sudden reaction with catalyst... don't do this at home. There are art and mechanical drafting pens with inks of various colors (though some colors are weak, black is pretty good) that can be used for fine lines. Different width pen nibs allow different width pins. Straight edges, curved splines, a plastic french curve or other guides can be used if your freehand linework isn't even.

used 220g on the area to be pinlined. push 1" 3M 2727 tape down with a razor blade. pencil works for me. I use finishing resin. add a couple drops of wax (surfacing agent). viscosity is the determining factor for bleed. thicken with areocil if desired. epoxy must be thickened to avoid bleed. 5cc catalyst seem to be good for our climate. avoid too much pigment. i pull the tape immediately so the wax covers the edges and seals them to avoid bleed when glossed. india ink is a good refill in a black posca. good luck!

Dude...I cannot fathom why anyone would give this video a thumbs down ???? Maybe they are "experts " whom criticize. Bullshit. Thankyou for giving us all this demonstration. They say a picture tells a thousand words. Well I can say a video saves a book. One point that I would like to question is: At what stage do you resin pinline? Is it after the gloss coat whereby you have already wet and dry rubbed down to 1200 grit , before the polish ? I would appreciate a professional answer this one. Thankyou again. PS May I add that resin pin lines are a sign of a true professional. Today pens are used and they make my blood run cold cos they are tacky and unprofessional. Old school is best- none of this short cut crap.

I think you sand the hotcoat up to 220 then pinline, light sand, then gloss coat (but I'm not a professional)

that's what I call a pin. I used to do it this way now im trying a posca pen for the first time. if it fails I will sand it off and try again

Hey, I tried doing a pinline on a board. The resin goes on smooth, but starts rippling shortly after applying the resin. What am I doing wrong?
