Bendheim Boards

Күн бұрын

Glassing a fish surfboard with Silmar polyester resin. I used 4 oz E-Cloth (2 layers on the deck and 1 layer plus a tail patch on the bottom), red resin tint, black posca pen pin lines and a gloss finish. FCS 2 fin plugs with FCS 2 Modern Keel Twin Fins. 5' 3" x 2 1/2" x 19 7/8". I've only glassed a handful of boards and am not an expert but this is the process that works for me.

I worked for glasser in hawaii for few months. Biggest time saving tip is to use hard back sander on first pass. Like 60 grit. Especially on laps of glass on rails. Fast and end up with smoother end product but have to be careful not to sand through. Lol. Great video. I could almost smell the resin. Mahalo.

Hey Tanner, Do you use anything to clean the board after sanding the hot coat? My last board I sanded then used denatured alcohol to clean the board before the gloss coat and ended up with tons of uneven spots. Gary
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 4 жыл бұрын
I usually wipe it down with a rag and then blow it off with a shop vac. I do also use denatured alcohol but very little. I just dab a little onto a rag and do a quick wipe down of the board. Be sure to sand in long drawn out passes to help keep the board even. I also get uneven spots some times, it’s hard to make it perfect. Good luck!

Tanner Bendheim love your shaping/ glassing room . I take it its in your yard or garden?. I live in the UK its getting cold towards winter. I've stopped glassing in my bedroom due tio temperature. (my dog and I are forced to seep in the lounge when glassing) Next spring, I'm putting something like this shelter in my small garden . but I havent seen a large shelter like yours here in the UK?. could you give us the make and size and cost $$££of that plastic frame tarp shelter set up? thankyou . Love this video. one of the best on utube from start to finish, perfect and to the point.

Thanks. It’s inside my garage. It’s a portable walk-in green house I purchased on amazon for $100. I live in Orange County, California so it doesn’t get too cold but I use a few heaters in the winter to keep it up to temperature. I think the the green house is 7x7x12. Here is a link to a similar one: www.amazon.com/dp/B001QIHEY0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_JggUDbZG7YZZ9 Best of luck!

Tanner Bendheim thanks I will go online and look for it. being portable you can put it in your bedroom, passage, garden, courtyard, garage and shape all day long I'm in heaven WAAAAAAA! I live on the English channel in Devon. this particular area in the south of Devon doesn't have any waves except in winter so you have to drive 40 miles to the nearest good wave up the coast at Bigsbury beach.. I am lucky though, even though this is in the beautiful green country side we have a surf supplier for blanks 3o miles away in Kingsbridge called Triocean its a great friendly surfshop. In the north of Devon waves are pretty good and plentiful.. What does freak me out here in devon is the stupid liberals. like California its run by the libdems and so there are the same problems you are facing in California. I am a British Trump supporter cheers , surfs up!

Hello Tanner, great video man! I saw you put the fins at the beginning of the whole lamination process (before the cloth and first lam coat) but not sure why didn't you put the plug during this same stage? Thanks you!
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks man, that’s a great question. You can actually do the FCS 2 fins before glassing or after, I’ve seen it both ways. Most do it before and it’s what FCS advises as well. The leash plug and longboard center fin boxes go in after the hot coat. I don’t really have a good reason as to why other than that’s what I was always taught and is industry standard.

Laminating resin with the fiberglass cloth and sanding resin for the hot coat to seal it. Use laminating resin for the fin and leash plugs as well. Laminating resin bonds to the board better and sanding resin allows you to sand once cured

Hey Tanner, love watching your videos. Do you have any tips for laminating the swallow tail? I can never lam the buttcrack area on the first go. Also the swallow tips tend to get pretty messy.
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 4 жыл бұрын
After my lamination I put an additional clear patch of fiberglass on the deck side of the swallow tail to cover the section of foam that my cut lap doesn’t get. If your doing a resin tint color just be sure to get the color on that section of foam even if the fiberglass doesn’t cover it. Then go in with the clear patch. Works great. For the tail tips just make sure you are checking your angle cuts on the fiberglass and how they will fold before adding the resin so you have clean overlaps. Good luck!

Hello mate, can you talk about the grit progression with this? In hotcoat and gloss coat! lovely job , nice work!
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Here is the grit progression: After the hot coat start with 120, then 150, 220, 320 and 400. Wet sanding with 320 and 400 is also a good idea. This will give your board a matte-finish. After the gloss coat, start with 320 grit then move to 400, 600, 800, 1000, and 1,200. You should wet sand all of these grits. Then finish with compounding liquid and then polishing liquid. Good luck!

Awesome work. I see that you used a posca pen for your lines and then gloss coated over it. How'd you not end up with any fish eyes? Did you wait for the resin to start kicking and get a little hot before applying?

I applied a few passes with the Posca pen. After pulling off the tape, I use a razor to scrape any small lines that bleed under the taped area. Then very very lightly I sand the lines down with a high grit sandpaper to get a smooth surface without any hard edges. Have to be careful not to sand through the line or you’ll have to reapply the line. Once it’s clean and smooth I apply a normal gloss coat and it works great. Didn’t do any special tricks with letting the resin start to kick as you mentioned. Hope that helps and good luck!

Hey man, I really appreciate the content you are putting up. I have a similar shaping set up in my garage. So far I have only been shaping epoxy, however I’m interested to try poly resin. What was your experience glassing polyester resin inside your garage. Were you using any type of ventilation? Cheers!
