For 2 mo. plus I had near ZERO C02 WASHOUT using the newer quiet elbow on my F20. My CPAP sleep report indicated 21 adverse sleep events per hour! I finally discovered NO AIR FLOW EXHALE coming out of my mask period! Bad headaches, falling asleep all day, waking up constantly at night, this is the fix here! I can't believe they allow the quiet ones, maybe they work for some or awhile but not in my case, nor my wifes (same mask) she also had ZERO C02 washout or NONE that could be felt from the mask. Replaced both with these, INSTANT RELIEF! It makes perfect sense now. I've been on CPAP for 25+ years and never experienced anything like this. Perhaps a little louder but at least you will wake up in the morning!!

My F20 exhalation port shuts off when I breath out normally. I just came back from a sleep study and my nurse couldn't figure out how the mask was supposed to work. Now I know why I've woken up suffocating every night. Thanks for your help!

Thanks for posting this, my last couple of elbows made noise right out of the box, wheezing or low harmonica humming or buzzing sounds after breathing though it for a minute or so. Makes it hard to fall asleep

Came because the elbow was hissing. This happened after a cleaning and it wasn't completely dry. The water residue in the small holes was the cause. Once completely dry it stopped. Latte Larry's is the Spite Store Larry David created to compete with his nemesis Jamocha Joe! 😁

Got air coming out of side holes in the clear plastic part which makes a noise and stops me getting any pressure unless I cover these two side holes with my fingers which of course is not practical. It worked well for 6 mths but now is noisey and pressureless. I was looking for a new part but they look the same as my part so I am not sure where the issue is

I had problems with that plastic part over the air vents - left me gasping for air & feeling like I was suffocating. I eventually took a pair of thin nail clippers & cut the extra plastic part off. Works fine now. I'll put up with the minimal amount of noise in order to breathe freely!

Hello Virginia, do you mean the semi-transparent cover? I found out it was clogged with debris and or lint residue. So y carefully took it out and I feel this thing whistles and blows like crazy. So uncomfortable! I never heard it blowing before. Do you think that your hack may reduce my problem?

@@drtrance My valve wasn't clogged with anything that I could see. It was just when I put it on the first time I ended up gasping for breath b/c the airflow seemed to be very restricted. The original version of this QuietAir valve has worked perfectly for years but somehow when I reordered the part, I got the one with the cover over the holes which, according to the manufacturer, made it more quiet.

@@virginias8015 Same happened to me. I took out the cotton under the plastic part aiming to take out that plastic cover if it did not help... it did not work. Now it makes so much noise it does not allow me to sleep. Tomorrow I will pick a new elbow. SMH... I will need to find another solution. Thanks for your reply!

Thank you for this video. I thoroughly clean all my equipment weekly and mask daily. I found mold and fuzz under the plastic ring today. Had to pull it out with a needle. I thought there was a filter in there and it got moldy from moisture. According to my supplier there is no filter in the elbow. Must be lint from bedding. Super gross and unhealthy. Especially when I'm trying to improve my health! My distributor is sending a new elbow but I'll ask for or buy on my own the older version. I'm sharing this video with them as well. They didn't seem to be aware it's a real problem that many others have. Thanks again!

Watching this video after internet research at 2am because I'm having breathing and sleep problems the past week and couldn't figure out what is going on. It felt like I was recirculating my own breath because it wasn't venting enough and after picking apart and examining my masks and elbows, I realized I cannot feel this thing venting. I don't know if mine is clogged or what the deal is here but I'm really hurting for a solution. I have a new set sitting in a box in the closet so hopefully if I swap it out I can get through the night with the new one and order some parts tomorrow. Thanks so much for the help here.

There is a temporary solution to get it working again. I used a piece of wire to poke each of the little holes which unblocked them. Give it a try

Thanks! I switched from a F10 to F20, felt like crap, thought something was wrong with me for a few days. I went back to F10 and problem went away. Going to get the old f20 elbow.

Wow, 3 years later, I'm a new CPAP user, I get the F20 makes, it comes with the new "quiet feature" thing, and yeah, exhaling has been terrible. I disconnected the elbow from the rest of everything and put my hand over the connection that would normally go to the machine, and my fingers over the anti-asphixation valves, blew, blew harder, and basically almost no air out of the vents in the quiet feature. I'm not surprised a company would make a design or manufacturing error like this, but to not have it fixed 3 years later is terrible.

Thanks for confirming other people have trouble with the new elbow. When I got fitted during the in lab sleep study I used the original elbow. When I finally got my CPAP and mask from the DME I felt like I was suffocating and had a lot of anxiety from it. Worried I was going to hate using it even though during the test I loved it and slept peacefully and never touched the mask according to to the sleep tech. Fortunately I had the mask from the lab and I switched and was back to feeling great. Upon closer inspection I noticed the one from the lab had the open vent original elbow and the new one suffocating me was the quietaire elbow. I've had asthma all my life and I absolutely HATE the new quietaire elbow. I don't care if it's quiet or doesn't blow air on anyone else in the bed. I need to breathe.

I suffer from anxiety and that definitely makes me anxious as well. Not a fan of the quiet air elbow. I'm happy ResMed makes the original version with part #'s.

These new style elbows work fine for a couple of weeks after washing them daily. Next thing I know, air is pouring out the two holes on the elbow. replace elbow and it works for another two weeks, Rinse and repeat. Mask itself is a perfect fit. Elbows are lousy.

Thanks for the help, was wondering why I couldn't exhale and was waking up feeling bad every morning.....my guess is from the CO2.....I cut off the plastic guard and removed the filter.....things are much better now.

I'm having a similar problem, bit I'm not sure it's the same. I can exhale most of the time when it's oof, but if I exhale at all hard, it makes a little "thunk" sound and I can't breathe out. When I turn it on, there's no exhalation at all possible.

Hi, How about other brands of cpap facemasks ,do they have holes around the mask to exhale air out? I assume that not all facemasks are made the same way from exhaling air standpoints. Please elaborate on these points.

I’m having an issue with my f20 quietair elbow but I don’t think it’s the same issue discussed in the video. I’ve looked online and there are a lot of users having the same issue as well. My cpap was working great when I first got it but after I washed it I seemed to be having air leak issues and poor sleep and couldn’t quite pin point why. I realized that a lot of air was leaking around to connector area of the elbow. I don’t think that this should be happening because I don’t remember it being like that when I first got it. Reading online, i users have found that the valves have stiffened and aren’t moving correctly due to sediment build up due to the water and to try wot wasn’t be elbow with mixed vinegar. I’m gonna try that today to see if it helps me. Anybody else have this issue?

Yes, we are having the same problem, it kind of whistles around the connector.. ours is brand new so shouldnt be residue buildup… let me know if you find a solution….

Mine sounds like its leaking from those air holes in the elbow where it vents my breathing. It sounds like that with the air coming into the mask. It's not the mask itself its just that elbow

Nothing but issues with new elbow… have gone threw 4 of them. Last night for the first time In 7 years I had to take my cpap off to get a good night sleep.. Trying to catch my breath as I’m inhaling my carbon dioxide. Seriously resmed!!??

Have the same problem of not being able to exhale and it usually happens half way through the night. Why can't they make the plastic piece that covers the holes removable, so it can be cleaned out? It doesn't even have to come completely off the elbow; just so you can move it back a ways to clean, then snap it back down. That seems like it would be a simple solution. I clean it daily but even with a brush, there's no way to get to that area. Have also tried just prying it off but that seems impossible. I have cut one off, only to find a ring of lint that almost looked like felt. After cleaning it off and trying to use without the plastic cover, since it was destroyed, the noise level was unbearable. And it didn't take too long, only days, before the second one did the same thing.

I feel like it’s next to impossible to actually CLEAN the quiteair elbow. After awhile I can see mine gets clogged up with all kinds of lint and what not but the way they made that plastic cover over the filter ring, stuff just gets trapped in there forever, forcing me to buy a new elbow again and again. They should have made it so you can take that plastic cap off and change out the filter ring under it.

they just changed the p30i to have the same thing but the sad part is you can inhail through it too. when i called resmed about the foam they just said to soak it. and use a brush. but think about breathing through a sponge for 30 days. at least this f20 exhails only but the p30i you can pull through too. gross. right? resmed doesnt seem to care about the problem

I reported the problem directly to ResMed over the phone about not being able to properly clean it when they first came out and even spoke to a higher up and they acted all shocked like they had no idea and claimed they have never heard anyone else with the same problem. I seriously doubt that. What’s most concerning imo is the moister that gets trapped in there after washing. It’s just a breading ground for bacteria. Their suggestion was to let my machine dry it by letting it run and blow air through it. (Which takes forever) I feel like they could easily tweak the design to make the cap snap on and off and offer more filters to change out when needed.

I noticed that I had dog hair in the holes of my quietair elbow and some dark spots. I was very concerned so I used a GUM brand soft pick toothpick and worked it into the "cup" behind the holes. I put it in and twisted it and got a big wad of dog hair and what looked like part of a fiber filter. But somebody else said there's no filter on this so I guess it was just lint and hair! Now, however, my mask makes more wind noise. It kept waking me up.

@@sharonschafer4966 yeah that little ring of sponge/filter must have come out and that’s why yours is making the hissing noise. I used tweezers trying to get the gunk out of one of mine but ended up taking the whole filter out too and the same thing happened. I tried making my own and shoving it in there but wasn’t able to find anything that worked (tried cotton and tiny pieces of tissue)

When I exhale the flaps inside the elbow smack the side of the elbow interior. I replaced the elbow and it still does it. What could the cause be and how can I fix it?

This is the same problem I am having. When the flaps fall down, that initiates a new inhale forced at me when I've not even exhaled yet, so CO2 retention is a big problem. The RT told me that increasing the EPAP (I use Bi-level support) may help to keep the flaps upright during therapy, but I cannot tolerate the EPAP being any higher. Not all of the swivel elbow connectors have this problem, but many seem to.

i don't have problems wit the quiet air vent to breath.just have problems with the filter in it. altere a few months the filter gets some black parts on it, and I think its not possible to change the filter for one cent or less. I guess I have to peplace the elbow part?

I’m finding that the quiet version traps too much debris and what looks like black mold. Impossible to open and clean so I wind up ordering backups.

Bingo. I was wondering about this exact thing. I couldn’t understand why I would wake up at night tachycardic. And why when exhaling there was no place for the air to go except back into the tubing; it wouldn’t bleed air. I will try this and see if it works.

Never considered this happening but this was helpful. I dont have any problem with the F30 but I do with F20 quiet fit elbow. I prefer the F20 because it is more comfortable on my nose for the entire night, as it doesnt hurt my nostrils like the F30 and N30 do, but I was definitely having exhalation issues. I have an F20 mask and got my Dreamstation 2 because of the recall. Ever since I’ve had the Dreamstation 2, the flaps in the neck of the original style elbow stay up,or blocking the exhaust ports on the side of the neck. I feel like I am drowning, because it seems that I am breathing back in my own exhaled breath. I can’t feel anything at the exhaust vents while wearing the mask awake, and testing to see how it functions. I didn’t have an issue with the Dreamstation one. Would you have any thoughts? Thank you

I have razz med air 2020 and I think it has the quiet air but when I breathe out the flaps go up they go up when you’re breathing but they also go up when you breathe out blocking those vent holes in it pushes air back at me almost like blowing up a balloon and then it leaks out the side of the mask the mask fills up and if I was sleeping I couldn’t force her out I don’t know if you got any explanations I’m gonna buy the older model knuckle

Maybe I'm missing something; however, when you clean your mask, elbow, hose, and water chamber wouldn't you be able to simply wash the lint/debris off the holes with some hard swishing in the water? Or use a soft toothbrush if you see something in the holes that didn't dislodge when it got a bath?

That sounds good. Not everyone cleans their mask with soap and water or knows that they should look for debris inside an elbow. Some people only use wipes and change out cushions. I have never cleaned a mask using soap and water personally and use the original elbow when using an F30 when I am not using a Vitera.

@@sandie1166 I’m not going teach someone how to clean something that’s a possible danger to themselves or possibly malfunction on CO2 exhalation with sleep apnea. I personally use the original as I’m scared to death of the quietair. I read everything you said and I don’t endorse manipulating your own cpap settings. The frame is different so you should use F20 frame for F20 and vice versa.

Does anyone know how to make the the connection between the mask (Hard plastic tubing) and tube (Loose Rubber tube connection) tighter? I have the Airfit F20 Full Face Mask and the Climate line air, and the connection is soo loose, it disconnects almost evey night. The design is terrible (especially for the lrice you pay for them).

I have tried small and medium F30. Blows straight into my eyes, Hopeless. I am a side sleeper and leaks all the way around. Stretches my lips. Just awful.

I have the quiet elbow on my F30 and I find that the air is coming out of it so much it's not quite, I don't know if this is because I'm on High variable pressures between 16 & 20 ?? Any thoughts would be helpful.

I have to say @ 16-20 it's likely to be noisy no mater what. I actually rolled up a bandana and tied it around the elbow. It would never restrict the airflow, but it does buffer the air coming out and muffle the sound a bit.

@@USAMedicalSupply I have encountered the same issue. It is not a "normal" CPAP mask sound. The elbow will be very quiet when new and then one day after a few months of use it starts hissing. I haven't found a solution to this besides replacement. I probably go through 3-4 of these elbows a year.
