The son is gorgeous! My heart breaks for him! Mom failed to guide him properly and all they do is blame him for his behavior and his sisters behavior ! Poor kid !

Poor guy, I felt that Jo could have intervened a bit there when both of his parents blamed him for everything. It was two against one, and that kid was already incredibly dejected after feeling like he messed up his life and future prospects 😥. Both Mum and Dad just kept saying, 'Oh all you do is just manipulate us and talked to us badly'. I mean, all kids/teenagers do that at some point? They should have done some heavy introspections and ask themselves what kind of toxic behaviours they themselves did that made him feel so utterly worthless while growing up. The son talked about joining 'the bad crowd' when younger, and the parents did not feel any responsibility over that at all? They just kept blaming him for it! They should have tried to intervene more, or own up to their mistakes as well.

@@rosemangofairy I agree. I feel so sorry for the son. The parents r a nightmare. They have totally broken their son's spirit and self esteem. I hope he's doing much better now. He had one idea to change his life's direction and instead of sitting down talking about it, they jumped on him for even considering joining the army. Who knows, maybe that's what he truly wants and needs. He just was so beaten down and it broke my heart for him. Everyone makes bad decisions, but u don't need to hold it over his head constantly. They have turned his bad choices into his identity. He need encouragement and praise daily so he can move forward with some sense of self confidence that he can achieve whatever he sets his mind on. Wishing him the best!

The first thing I thought was ´Put the blame on me´ from that Rita Hayworth song. The son is sitting there like a little piece of sadness because he´s constantly being blamed . I´m not saying he´s an angel but he´s clearly very sad, he feels misunderstood and left out and of course being blamed on. He has all the right to feel that way. The thing with ´taking advantage´ of your parents. Let´s please be honest we all did this while growing up. We also struggled, even as young adults, and we all knew that in the end mom and dad were there to rely on. That´s a way of safety , that only a family is able to give you. Why I do know this? Because I lost my parents when I was 17 years old. And tbh at that time I relied heavily on my parents, at least in the sense of a safety net. I knew if something went wrong I could go to my parents and complain about it and in some sort of way they would help me to get me back on track. In a normal situation you grow out of this behaviour. If something happens , you are forced to grow up. And let me tell you, not a great experience whatsoever .

Those parents blaming their son for their daughter's behavior is disgusting! How did Michael learn the behavior? He didn't have a big brother to learn the behavior from. Blame someone else and then you won't be the problem.

This mother takes absolutely no responsibility for her bad parenting choices. It’s her husbands fault, it’s her older sons fault. It’s everyone else and not her. SHE is the common denominator, she knows her husband works long hours to provide for them all and she needs to stop pretending her son raised himself to be the confused young man he is. She needs to take the power back in her life and in her family - That’s the only way forward towards progress in changing the dynamics inside her household. She’s given all her power away, as a woman and as a mother, to her husband and her children and now she’s left feeling powerless. She is the only one that can change those conditions. Take a stand and say no more! It’ll be the hardest work of her life, taking a new approach towards the way she interacts with everyone in her life, but it will be the most rewarding thing she’s ever done. A better relationship with her husband and raising children who can grow up to be adults she can be proud of. The power is in her hands, she just needs to be enlightened as to who she is currently and encouraged to be the woman she wants so desperately to be.

I’m only ten minutes in. I don’t think the age of the son has been said yet but he’s clearly a young adult. That said, it is abundantly clear to me that these parents are absolutely toxic. All they’ve done just ten minutes in is berate him, dwell on his past poor decisions many young people finding their way make, it seems as though they’re inadvertently putting their marital issues on him…so far, the son seems self aware and knows he needs to begin the journey of improving his life but the best advice I can give to him is that it’ll never happen being around your own parents who all you crave is their acceptance and guidance and the poor kid is constantly being put down. Just because someone brought you into this world, you do not owe them a damn thing if they’re speaking to you like this- go your own way (if financially even feasible). These parents are just degrading their son on national television- can’t imagine how his childhood was. If their underage child is an out of control mess, maybe the parents need to look at themselves.

Ain't that the truth! I have often thought children are cursed to love their parents, no matter what. Loving the alcoholic beater against all sense. It's up to us now that we're the parents, to be worthy of our own children's trust and respect. No matter what.

The body language of the father leaning far back in his chair speaks volumes of how he feels he is trying to separate him for any of the responsibility. But both parents are absolutely horribly in their treatment of Michael. That poor boy. Sure, he may not have made all the best choices, but it doesn't sound like those parents have provided any sort of useful guidance in his upbringing. I think the discipline of the army probably would've been good for him.

The mother is to blame for all of this by allowing her kids to get away with things. She doesn't know how to raise kids and then blames her oldest child. Shameful. She sounds like a two year old.

I don't get Jo's issue with that young man wanting to join the military. It sounds to me like he's been doing his research and homework and there are so many opportunities in the military. I wish my son would join. My son is an advanced open water certified scuba diver with PADY, and I can just imagine how far he could go in the military with just that to start with.

@@suestenstream3041 you don't think so? The military has a way of readjusting attitude and personality with discipline and values. I'd like to think he'd make it, but maybe that's just me and me being hopeful in still hoping my son will join, which he still hasn't done yet even after all this time. So I still have a 20 year old over grown kid (and he really is at 6'4") not going to school and not working. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that he'll do something soon cause he's a good man and very intelligent and I'm not just saying that cause he's my son.
