Responding to Game Theory's Persona 4 Video (Fixed Audio)

Game Theory uploaded a video about Persona 4 and people wouldnt stop bothering me about it so here's a video about why the 'theory' doesnt hold up and relies pretty much entirely on supplementary/completely made up evidence. He's also weirdly rude and seems unwilling to make the theory in the first place.

The Velvet Room is the boundary between the Sea of Souls and the Real World/Cognitive Reality. That's why Igor used to introduce himself as "Philemon's servant", as Philemon is the embodiment of the collective unconscious/Sea of Souls. So Yaldabaoth forcing himself into the Velvet Room means he's a shadow that became so powerful and "shared" by so many humans that it became a "God" (albeit a false one), powerful enough to be self conscious and act o its own, therefore being able to affect the real world even if ever so slightly at first. So Teddie being in the Velvet Room is no surprise really as it is in that point of the game that he ascends to become fully and completely human, thus making some some of "passing" from the "shadow realm" to the "surface" (real world) through the Velvet Room. Aigis' case is even more impressive. Her Persona was the result of having an artificial heart created with a Plume of Dusk, but she used it before becoming completely human, so she operated just like Teddie before being 100% human, as a shadow with a mask. Then she becomes human by the end of P3 and then after Minato's death she negates her humanity, tearing herself apart. At that moment one half of her became a shadow, Metis, which somehow retained the Plume of Dusk power and made herself able to summon a Persona of her own, and the other half which, despite everything, couldn't fully let go of being human and awakened to the potential of the Wild Card. So there we have it - a human with a Persona that also have a shadow that can summon a Persona too. In my opinion, those who awaken to the Wild Card have a very strong connection to the Sea of Souls which comes from a childhood where they just can't feel connected to the real world so they fluctuate between "dream and reality". Well, this all speculation tho, to be honest. But at least it makes some sense, I guess.

Well this is good BUT Yaldabaoth is actually closer to philemon himself than a shadow. Yaldaboath as well as Erebus are creations of the wild collective conscious due to their desire for one specific thing becoming so strong the collective conscious created an entire entity to fulfill their desire. Erebus for death and Yaldabaoth for a god, to be controlled. So if Yaldaboath were a shadow and Philemon is the collective conscious then Yaldabaoth would be Philemons shadow which doesnt work so Yaldabaoth has to be a different entity entirely.

An interesting addition to this is that Aigis loses the ability to summon her own Persona - depending on your Social Link with her in The Journey, either Athena or Paladian - when this happens, meaning her "true" Persona is lost in the creation of Metis, her Shadow, driving home the idea that Shadow and Persona are one in the same. Metis is Athena/Paladian, but can summon a Persona of her own due to retaining Aigis' built-in ability to do so. That's really interesting actually.

I just wanted to point out that the protagonist isn't really the 'odd man' because he doesn't have a shadow because he does have one. It's explained in the games that one person's shadow and their Persona are different manifestations of one and the same thing. Because the protagonist knew of his inner shortcomings and accepted them right from the get go, he didn't have to face his shadow because it already was in the form of a Persona. :)

Loved when his entire Metroid fusion theory was based around false information, or the assumption that the game never explained a specific event (which it did, it's a very obvious dialogue that you can't miss unless you're skipping the story). I like watching game theory's videos, but people really need to stop with this bullshit argument of "bro, it's just a theory", a theory isn't an excuse to not knowing the bare minimum about a series, the whole point of a theory is gather the information you have in order to fill the gaps of something, you can't pull shit out of your ass and expect people not to dislike it. He begs Yu to help him find who he is and where he came from, find the killer fix the world etc (a combination of those idr rn) and its after Yu agrees to that he gets another visit from Igor telling him he's made a contract. Jorge González Likely but it was more likely made because Persona 5 became uber popular, and so someone working for him or he himself wanted to make a theory based on it to play off of it's popularity and when interest would increase do to the anime recently coming out. So they do a quick Google search for Persona theories and find some Teddie theories and someone lazily decides what the theory and it's outcome should be Teddie being His shadow, and then they look for evidence to support their theory threw the wiki and forum posts. No one properly proof reads it as they want to send the video out when it will get the most clicks, so waiting too long might hurt their potential add revenue, as Matpat has been known to care about KZbin's algorithms and how to game them. And they view there views as being literally entertainment and not something to be taken seriously, which is an easy way to deflect critisms of being lazy when making videos and not actually knowing what you are talking about.

I could tolerate wrong information. It's a JRPG after all there are literally thousands of lines of dialogue. You're bound to miss *something* But his fucking condescending attitude was uncalled for. And frankly cringy to listen to. It was like listening to one of those guys who insists that he is smarter than everyone else, and yet has absolutely no knowledge of anything he's talking about. Great video though. Also I felt the series is pretty consistent in terms of how shadows form and how they exist. They are just repressed feelings of the populace, those who don't form "contracts" Because they never face themselves and are forced to recognize their true feelings, they can never form a Persona. That's pretty consistent in *every* game. The only difference between games is how people summons their Personas and how complex the structure of the alternate world gets. For example in Persona 2 the main characters have only accepted roughly half of "the truth", and so they are able to summon weak versions of their personas. But in order to get their true Persona they must face their shadows and defeat them, both mentally and physically. They also have to accept them as themselves. In Persona 3, the characters are arguably already honest with themselves and what they want, so their Personas already exist, yet because they haven't faced their shadows, they have to use Evokers to force the Persona to emerge. After undergoing some deep reflection, each character also obtains their true Personas. In Persona 4, they have their respective Arcana cards floating that they "break" in order to summon the Persona, which in the TV World is probably representation of the publics view of tarot cards. And of course in P5, the shadows remain the hidden psyche that people don't want to admit/accept, which if different enough from reality "distorts" into a Palace Ruler, and forms a treasure.

As far as I'm aware, we don't know the criteria for getting a Persona among the 3 cast (If we do, I apologize, it's been a while since I played Persona 3, so my memory of it isn't fresh), and in 5, the odd man out is FUTABA because she gets her Shadow in the same way as the P4 cast, compared to everyone else, protagonist included, who decides to rebel against society. Obviously, they are different in that they have the Wild Card, but what was being discussed was how they got their Personas, more than how can they have a bunch of different Personas

Coming to terms with your shadow. (P1 and P4) The only exemption to the rule is when your persona (or reverse persona in Adachi's case) is when an entity like Philemon and Izanami granted the Persona themselves.

Because wouldn't that fall under the exemption of being granted it by an entity, in this case Izanami? Then again, I never finished Persona 1 (I couldn't stand the gameplay), and I've yet to play 2, so maybe there was something in those that showed retroactively that 5 falls under than radar?

I'd like to think that Izanami merely gave those three a slight push and when Yosuke was in trouble, Izanagi was called as a knee-jerk reaction. Well I cant blame ya, P1 and P2 didnt aged well but the concepts and lore was retained to modern persona such as 5 having the shadows have their demon form when unmasked (which the rerelease of P2EP in the psp explained how demons became shadows after P2).

It's surprising that MatPat's writers hadn't realized that, with writing about how Teddie's Arcana is a part of Yu's journey to the World, that.. That's literally the _entire point_ of the Social Link system. You form bonds with other people to complete who you are, and the use of Arcana highlights the idea of the Hero's Journey for the recent Persona titles, too. Spot of irony, that.

Yeah there was something about that video that made me feel... off. Even if the teddie theory was correct it all felt condescending. And besides, teddie being Yu's shadow doesnt add up to me. Izanagi directly gave Yu his ability use persona through a freaking handshake and a persona is the shadow of it's user. I've always thought of Teddie as sort of a rare yet "natural" occurrence in the tv world. That's highly unlikely though since Nanako didnt get a shadow when Namatame pulled her into the tv world. Another cool idea wouldve been that he could be a result of yu's fool arcana. While the wild card ability usually just refers to the ability to hold multiple persona at once and change and use them at will, the wild card has done other odd things if im remembering correctly though not too many instances of the wild card affecting other things have been seen so im just using baseless conjecture... but what if teddie was brought into existence soley to assist Yu in his journey? Actually nah... Yu had to form the contract with Teddie to gain access to the velvet room... lol most of these ideas are probably best suited for fanfics anyway since i dont really have any evidence for them.

He is more of a entertainer than a researcher, he prioritize theme even if it leaning toward negativity even some of his theorist are misinform or wrong, but just like he said it before, even a bit of negativity will get views. He just doesn't want the whole visual to be boring or serious, he focus on his meme/puns more, just take a look and how his video is, the editing is really good, compare to the more serious, sitting in front of camera, no effect, clear voice or using the comic or scene material with little or without added effect like for example ComicsExplained and Comicstorian, who did a very good job explaining lore of a character, and even making a series to explain a whole arc, going back and forth, and yet they average around 40k-50k views, and on good times 400k+, now take a look at Gametheorist, 1m, 2m,3m, the least views but average around 5mil and even went 11mil that 1mil extra that isn't subscribe to him and that just ONE channel, he still got his Filmtheorist channel and that a whole another salt. It clearly people are more attracted how information is present than how precise the content is. I can honestly say to everyone, i watch Matpat not because of how accurate his theory is or how lore friendly it is, because we can just throw that out of the window, and let Godzilla step on it. I wrote that intro trying to play up the joke that it was a video no one would like, and in the process, I created a self-fulfilling prophesy that offended people and I'm sorry about that. It's never my intent to offend people. Maybe poke fun of in a joking way or call out for bad behavior (some other KZbinrs), but it's never my goal to offend a group of people for liking what they like -- I'm sorry if it came off that way. Second, I clearly didn't go deep enough or understand everything as clearly as I thought I did. As with the Phoenix Wright episode (another misjudgment on my part), I thought this game would function well-enough as a stand-alone title, but clearly there were added details in other games as well as supplemental content that I just didn't take into consideration. There were a few facts in this one that I either forgot to double check because I assumed I knew them off the top of my head (Elizabeth) or I could have explained better (Izanami). Again, I should have gone deeper, but time constraints and thinking I had covered all the necessary ground made me stop looking when clearly I should have kept digging. My life this past weekend was incredibly stressful and sad, so having a video receive a heavy backlash in the middle of it all was the last thing I needed, which resulted in me losing my head. he never played the game and only did research on a certain number. I was and still only dedicated to persona 3 which is why i researched and played everything related and connected to it which took me to the WHOLE FRANCHISE.

KazeAce Most of Matpats theories are written by other people too. Not that there's anything wrong with it since he's a big channel but thats what makes his theories feel so corperate and artificial. Honestly I only watch Gaijin Goomba cause he actually CARES about his videos. And from watching his videos on Persona, I can tell he actually has a lot of love for the franchise.

He had a pinned comment up for 5 minutes attacking anyone who brought up the other games, the anime, Izanami, his getting the name wrong, what the Velvet Room is, among other things. He attacked the canon and stated, more or less, how he is above criticism. An ego trap. He took it down when others pointed out his man-child showing.
