JD Greear and Jen Wilkin interpret the Bible like children. "The Bible mentions this a hundred times and only mentions this ten so obviously it's less of a sin." Here's a clue: Jesus wasn't calling out immorality as often as he called out hypocrisy because the Pharisees who confronted him were not having illicit relations in public all the time, but they were being hypocrites. I saw that Megan posted that "Christianity Today's leadership is encouraging Christians to vote for the most pro-abortion, morally disordered presidential ticket this nation has ever known." This, of course, is what candidate Trump said about abortion on Fox News: "Abortion is all about the will of the people. You must follow your heart, or in many cases your religion or your faith. Do what’s right for your family and do what’s right for yourself.” This, of course, is a strong pro-abortion/pro-choice statement. I don't need to describe the level of Trump's moral disorder. It seems a lot of the pushback is coming from many who follow or worst case idolize these popular pastors caught in minor error or even repeated perpetual error. Regarding the disingenuous or super spiritually immature types, we can see the outworkings of 2 Tim 4:3 being played out here. Having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions. It seems in correlation, they will not only accumulate these teachers for themselves but also defend them to no limit, even in the face of evidence. I guess we need to remain hopeful that even if the Lord draws only a few pastors to repent or the Lord convicts a handful of people to seek a sound church by means of Megan's book, then the book was worth it. As much as these pastors are to be held accountable, they are the product of many who will not endure sound teaching, and they will be propped up as long as they continue to itch everyone's itching ears. I do feel bad for many under these compromising ministries who are genuine born again believers who are being misled or left undiscipled and spiritually starving. Hence why a book like Megan's is much needed.

Greear doesn't say it in so many words, and it is a bit tedious to cut through the thicket of his lengthy rhetoric, but, to put it in legal terms, "by the preponderance of the evidence," one may conclude that J.D. Greear IS encouraging, i.e., arguing for, his congregation to minimize speaking about homosexual sin. His schema for "gradations" of sin is completely arbitrary, unscriptural, disingenuous, and preposterous. In a word, his MO is "gaslighting." Gaslighting is a tactic in which a person or entity, in order to gain more power, makes a victim question their reality. Gaslighters know that people like having a sense of stability and normalcy. Their goal is to uproot this and make you constantly question everything. And humans' natural tendency is to look to the person or entity that will help you feel more stable-and that happens to be the gaslighter. The term "gaslighter" would appear to fit J.D. Greear to a tee. As you stated, DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS MAN!

Can woman be Deacon’s in a church. I think they should not , but is it ok?
@conceptualclarity2 ай бұрын
No. You have 1 Timothy 2:12 against women exercising authority over men in the church which is corroborated by 1 Corinthians 14:34 where it says women in the church " should be in submission as the Law also says" (ESV). In the early church it's mentioned in the Didache how they had deaconesses, but the deaconesses were not serving alongside men as members of some board of deacons governing the church. They were assigned tasks of ministering to other women including serving communion and visitation. I would say that it would be inadvisable to appoint a woman as a deacon under those circumstances today because it would cause confusion and foster error in people hearing and saying: "Oh they've got women deacons; therefore it must be okay for women to be in authority in the local church." So I would say that if you want to appoint women for tasks with other women, find some other way to designate them.

I disagree with you on the matter of Ortlund's treatment in the book by Basham. She was demonstrably misleading, and I am sad that this is being defended. As with David Barton's book on America that had to be pulled by Thomas Nelson, Christians seem to have a very difficult time insisting on accuracy in particulars when an author has the overall narrative correct. It's not pedantic or nitpicky to demand accuracy, even in an otherwise great book She should apologize and correct the next printing, not double down.

Comparing what she wrote and what people actually said makes it hard to justify the book. She misrepresented/misquoted many people. Also, only two of the topics in the book can be considered to be genuine Christian stances. The rest are cultural issues which are not held universally by all Christians living outside the US. What makes this book problematic is that if it really was about Christianity, then it would not be so US-centric. If we are to follow her logic, then all Christians holding to a contrarian view have been bought, manipulated, or misled by the left.

@@jerilowehowell6015 what context am i missing here? Do you really think that all the times Paul is instructing women to remain silent and not take authority over a man nor teach that it is only on Sunday morning, night or Wednesday evening (or whenever your church meets to hear the scriptures get taught) is the only thing Paul is speaking to? If Megan writes a book to/for he Church and someone “learns” from that book how is this not putting herself in a place of authority (i.e. teaching). If the book is written for the Church audience and it discusses scripture, how in God’s green earth is this not taking authority over a man? Especially is she is discussing things about certain so called “Pastors” erroneous teachings? Notice how in this response, Jon shows a video that Megan does not address. In the video JD Greear went off into lala land about a ton of woke things but he also spoke about women being looked to for wisdom. Wonder why Megan doesn’t cover this? Maybe because she realizes this is error but hopes no one will notice. Also, how is this in line with what Paul is saying in 1 Corinthians 14 and 1 Timothy 2, to name a couple of scriptures? If you think that Paul is only talking about actual physical church gatherings where the Bible is taught or something weird like that, I am not sure I am the one ripping it out of context.

If we always start from a literal reading of the Bible, we can never understand what the lessons of the Hebrew and Christian Bibles actually mean. Jewish biblical scholars say the OT is a collection of myths and legends from prior cultures and religions, like the Flood Story (Gilgamesh was before Noah), the laws of Moses (Sargon and Hammurabi were before Moses), etc., so the meaning of these ancient myths are universal to all humanity. They were never intended for a specific religion like Judaism. Same with values and beliefs borrowed by Israel from prior cultures. It’s all they had at the time so they believed what they heard from other cultures and religions. It’s incorrect to think Israel’s views on sex, or Israel’s beliefs about animal sacrifices, came from Yahweh. They came from prior religions. We must think about this before we assume that our God wrote the Bible.
@sherrihamptonmusic2 ай бұрын
I don't know about your god, but my God is clear about the Scriptures. 2Tim.3:16--"All Scripture is breathed out by God..." See the documentary "Is Genesis History?" - it explains the strength and reliability of the Scriptures very well. Some is historical narrative, some is poetry, some is prophetic, etc. All of Scripture is God-breathed.
@Jack-eo5fn2 ай бұрын
@@sherrihamptonmusic I agree with that, but where we disagree is “which gods?” Example: in 1,750 BC the god Shamus told Hammurabi to climb the mountain and receive the law that the god wrote on stone. So Hammurabi climbed the mountain and received the laws of his god Shamus. Then 500 years LATER Moses climbed his mountain (Mt Sinai) and received the laws from his god whom he called Yahweh. Then as we know, in a fit of anger Moses busted the tablets on his way back down his mountain. No one has ever seen the stone tablets of Moses. No one. But think about this: everyone can still see the stone column of Hammurabi from 1750 BC with the laws engraved in the basalt rock. It has been perfectly preserved for almost 4,000 years. In fact it can be seen today in the Louvre Museum of Paris. The stone column is called “The Stele of Laws of Hammurabi.” This is no secret. Every educated lawyer knows it. Hammurabi and his laws are actually sculpted into the walls of the Supreme Court of the United States. Next to Hammurabi on the sculpture stands Moses who received his laws from Yahweh 500 years after Hammurabi died. So yes the narratives and poetry of the Bible are God-breathed by the gods of early civilizations. No credible scholar thinks the book of Genesis is “historical.” No way. It consists of powerful myths and stories passed down from earlier civilizations. Even the great story of Noah’s Ark was first written over 1,000 years before the Bible. It’s still preserved today. It’s the oldest children’s story in human history. It’s called “The Epic of Gilgamesh.” It’s found on the 11th tablet of the collection. It’s the same story we later called Noah’s Ark.

@Jack-eo5fn2 ай бұрын
@@outboardprsnlstndup , I don’t want you to be uncomfortable or to feel threatened in your faith. That’s not my point. But you’re not correct when you say I’m trying to “correct thousands of years of Biblical scholarship.” Sorry but nope. My thesis at seminary was based on the history of early civilizations before Israel. That’s where Israelites got their legends and myths which they later (circa 586 BC) compiled into the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). If you’re at all curious you can find a lot of the same information today on the Internet if you stick only with credentialed scholars in ancient history. Didn’t you ever wonder how nations before Israel kept from killing each other, or stealing or lying in court about their neighbors? If you’ve got a brain, which obviously you do, then of course you’re silently curious about the origins of biblical laws, stories and events. Where did they come from? You can start with the cities and nations of Mesopotamia, long before Israel. Look up the king of Akkad named Sargon. He created the first laws in 2023 BC. Spoiler - Moses is said to have lived around 1,200 BC which is over 1,000 years after king Sargon of Akkad. What were Sargon’s laws? “Do not murder or harm your neighbor, do not steal, do not lie about your neighbor in court, you shall do no injustice in the market place such as cheating a man out of his financial reward for his hard work, you shall provide for widows and children who have no money for daily food, etc. So now you ask, where did Sargon get his laws for the nation of Akkad in 2,300 BC. Thanks for asking! Sargon said his laws came from his God, called Ashur. So you ask, did the god Ashur anoint Sargon to be king of Akkad so he would deliver holy laws to this early civilization? Yep. Sargon was protected by his god as an infant. His god hid him in a basket of reeds and bitumen and floated him down the river as an infant. His basket came to rest in the tall grass next to the palace. Sound familiar? A servant from the palace rescued the baby from the water. He raised him in the palace to be a royal son because the king at that time had no son. Thus, baby Sargon grew up to become king of the Akkadian nation, and to deliver god’s first laws to the earliest civilization of Akkad. Later those same laws were expanded upon, improved, and written down in stone by Hammurabi who gave them to his people on a stone column in 1,750 BC. The stone was preserved and, as I say, it’s on display today at the Louvre in Paris. I’ve seen it twice. The stone is 8 feet tall and carved in the shape of a finger. Yes, it’s the divine finger of the god Shamus with the 132 laws inscribed around the finger. I know there are photos of it if you Google “Hammurabi’s code of laws.” It won’t hurt you to look. Anyway, then Moses was said to be born around 500 years after Hammurabi died. Moses expanded on the laws of Hammurabi to 613 laws for Israel. So that’s where our laws came from - from all 3 law givers: King Sargon of Akkad, King Hammurabi of Babylon, and Moses of Israel, in that order. Notice I have not mentioned the Bible. My emphasis is on the civilizations and legends BEFORE the Bible was written.
