Hi - I'm not a goth, just a fifty-something, death-positive, tomboy, "everybody's mom" type. KZbin brought me to your channel when I was looking for tips on recovering an umbrella. I love your aesthetic and humor and sewing videos. You are absolutely right to call out this fool. I was in high-school in central Texas in the 80's. I had my FILL of guys telling me how I need to be to become "valid" to them. Dress more sexy, wear more makeup, think less, talk less... not to mention everybody's favorite "smile more, you'll be prettier". Our culture has convinced these non-thinking males that the world revolves around them and that women are here for them, to appeal to them, to serve them, to cater to them. I am so done with that attitude. Good job calling it out and not tolerating his BS. We have to work to make this hate unacceptable so that the young women of the future don't have to live with it. I've definitely had my fair share of comments (majority by men) in regards to how I dress and what they feel I'm better suited to. In my teens I've had grown men (FRIENDS OF MY PARENTS FOR EXAMPLE) tell me that I should lay off the baggy clothes and show off my body, quit hiding it. Saying this under the guise of "bringing up my self esteem" ( WHERE IS THE BARF EMOJI) . As an adult and a thrash metal head with a bit of a sloppy style, I've received comments regarding my femininity, and why would a pretty girl like me want to hide under the battle vests and combat boots. I've also had the opposite, comments about self-respect when I've leaned more sexy and or feminine. What does any of it even mean? Why the fuck do they care so much? "You'd look much younger if you kept your natural hair color" "You looked better when you dyed your hair" (what) "You'd look more approachable if you'd smile" " The peircings ruin it for me" Theres no winning so lets do what the fuck we want, and help those who aren't strong yet, get stronger.

I had something similar but on a different level. My ex and I were fighting over child custody and he had he lawyer say the way I dress is a bad influence I my child. I dress goth and alternative. I would even say a more dressed down goth. I thought that was the most idiotic and ignorant thing that has been said to me. How I care for my child has nothing to do with my appearance. How can you base someone’s ability to raise their child on how they look. I really hate people like the one you dealt with.

Since I was 12 years old men have told me how I could change and improve to make them like me more... Sad thing is, these particular people actually do think they are entitled to these changes or that their "well meaning advice" is actually welcome and needed. When I was much younger comments like this sometimes got to me and sometimes I tried to change. I'm not sure if you will read this. I'm commenting several months late. When I was in my early 30s, (l'm 42 now) I got my navel piercing. I was proud of it and felt good and sexy. It all went away in 5 seconds when my mom scrunched her face and said yuck, you got your stomach pierced. I kept my composure and didn't say anything. But it bothered me. Another time in my 30s, my grandma came to visit. She said why don't you like light colors? They were little comments but they hurt. Now that I am 42, my house is quite a bit purple and black. I went with Gothic Victorian and I never looked back. I've paired that with enchanted forest. I'm so free and feel calm! I'm confident in my style! So the moral of my story, do what makes you happy! At the end of the day, you've got to be happy. So keep being you and moving forward. I love how positive you are.

It is a small town and there aren't many goths around, so the comments and looks are very bad and my style is pretty casual. When I do something new or more extreme my nerves are so bad going out for the first time, because I know how hateful people can be. I think your style is absolutely gorgeous! I have also gotten comments like this online in the past. Most people focus on my piercings and say I’m nasty or trashy because of them. I’ve learned to just laugh it off and not care, but when I was younger and less confident I would get very hurt by things people would say. In my college years I decided to try wearing clothes I saw many other ladies wearing because I felt that my style must be really terrible based on the hate. I was miserable pretending to be someone I was not and I quickly learned that there is no joy in life if you are not being yourself. You’re absolutely right, not everyone is going to find someone attractive and that is fine! I also thought it was funny that this idiot thinks Gothiness is linear when it is definitely not. There are so many different ways to wear Goth clothing and participate in the lifestyle that every single one of us is different. I think that is what makes it so beautiful, the variety and imagination! 💜

I don't know exactly how old I was, but I must have been over 18. I was riding the subway in the city I lived in and it was about half full with people. Suddenly, out of nowhere, I got tapped on the arm and an about 60 year old guy (typical hair loss, big belly, normie clothing neither fancy nor dirty) looks me in the eyes very angrily and says "You know, I would f**ck you if you wouldn't have those things *gestures that he means my flesh tunnels** in your ear!" and continued to look at me angry and as if he expected an apology. I wanted to throw up in his face, but I decided to just speechlessly walk away a few meters. Thankfully that was the end of it. I wished my tunnels bigger and a couple piercings to suddenly plop up in my face in self defense to digust him away XD

I'm a goth, have been one since I was a teenager (recently turned 40), all the comments you mentioned you have heard before, I think every goth everywhere can sympathise with this, because I was just nodding along to every single one of them. When I heard the whole Danny Phantom thing, I also had to look that up...There really are no words for why he thinks that would be attractive, but lets just say I hope to hell he's a 14 year old kid and not a grown man. One thing I have never understood is why, when someone looks alternative, the general public think it's open season to just say the first bullshit comment that enters their head to your face and see it as socially acceptable. Can you imagine if goths went around giving their opinions on the way these people choose to dress? Waffle aside, I used to do modelling for a friend who designed her own goth fashion back in the early 2000's and around that time, there was a photoset I did that I was really proud of, so I posted one of the pics as my profile pic on deviantart. The majority of comments from women were amazing and encouraging, but there was this one guy who just had to be "that guy." and as I recall his message read "You look scary, you should do your hair like you're going to a prom and then guys would like you more." I was sadly used to the "You look like a *insert negative bs here*" comments by then, so I responded in kind. "What makes you think I dress with the intention of getting guys to like me more? I dress for me." His response? "I hope you're not one of those bisexuals." Clearly not the brightest bulb.

one comment stands out in my head when I think about this sort of behavior. it's the moment my boss told me only autistic people have fidget spinners and I said no, they don't, anyone can use fidget spinners it's to help cope with anxiety and stress then he told me if I have anxiety I should go to golds gym because I am overweight and he said the truth hurts.

As a plus size goth person I've had people ask me to lose weight (I can't I'm on a life saving medication that causes weight gain) I'm not even that big but I have had doctors tell me I'm obese I'm 160 pounds and I've even had people screaming at me for not fitting what they want me to be and now with the whole sexualization of what people think goth people are now I have really nasty dms on Instagram and since I've gained weight the sexualization has gotten worse to the point men ask me if they can "Touch my belly and watch it jiggle" I'm so glad I have a partner who loves me no matter what I look like

Welp. I got a few stupid comments and downright possible dangerous stuff happening (like me and my boyfriend at the time getting followed by 5 guys on the subway, while they were making comments on my hair, calling me insane among other things). Even got called by a TV station to talk about it, since prejudice against members of subcultures is not really a topic in my country. Was even able to get the audience laughing with me recounting the time I was told to, and I quote "leave the Devil, because God will forgive you. If you don't leave the Devil, you'll never have a family". Well, I had some very positive reactions. Then I had a girl saying "she's so "alternative" that she looks like a killer whale" (I'm fat, so let's throw a fatphobic comment for good measure, when this was not even the topic that was being discussed). Also got a troll, which was fun.

New Subscriber! Been watching for a minute but this one got to me. Don't usually post comments much on really anything but I wanted to share my "lovely" experience with a family member that I had and will unfortunately never forget. To put a bit of background on this comment I received, I was at the time about 13 14, still young and in a baby bat phase (still kinda am tbh but I only recently decided that being myself is better than anything). But back to it, I'm 14 and this person in my family is with me and many other members of the family and were just talking, in what I have no idea....however out of nowhere the conversation we were having then lead this person to then ask "oh yea like him right? So when are you going to shoot up a school or something....aren't you obsessed with death?" Needless to say but F**k them and at the age of 20 now I distance myself from them in every way possible.
