The Responsibility to Protect, often abbreviated R2P, is a principle in Global Politics that asserts states have the primary responsibility to protect their own people from crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing, or other major human rights violations. If states fail to uphold this responsibility, it then falls on the international community to protect people of the countries affected.

Great video and explanation. Thank you very much. But I disagree with Kaddafi issue. They just used R2P as a weapon against a great leader who stayed on the path of the West.

@@KorczyksClass Another event to think about: 1) TEN YEARS AGO: THE GHOUTA CHEMICAL ATTACK • On August 21, 2013, a chemical attack took place in the Ghouta region of Syria. The attack killed hundreds of people and injured thousands more. The attack was carried out using sarin gas, a deadly nerve agent. • The GCA was a horrific event that reminds us of the stupidity of war. In war, people are manipulated to fight, die, and kill for unknown reasons. Innocent people are killed, and soldiers fight against what they think they are fighting for. • The GCA also proves that the US government's principles of defending human rights and democracy are a facade. The US government is more interested in protecting its corporate interests than in protecting human rights or democracy. The US government has supported non-democratic governments that violate human rights as long as those governments preserve the US's corporate interests. • The GCA is a sad and shameful example of what can happen when societies go to war. It is a crime against humanity that no one has taken responsibility for. The attack was an unnecessary action that did not solve the conflict. Instead, it made reconciliation harder to achieve. • The GCA is an event that we should remember and learn from. It is a call to find the real beneficiaries of preserving conflicts. It is time to make the final war: war against war. • The GCA is also a reminder of the importance of peace and reconciliation. We must work to find a peaceful solution to the Syrian Civil War and to prevent future conflicts. • Here are some additional thoughts on the GCA: • The GCA was a major turning point in the Syrian Civil War. The attack led to increased international pressure on the Syrian government and to calls for military intervention. • The GCA also led to a debate about the use of chemical weapons in warfare. The international community condemned the use of chemical weapons, and the Syrian government was forced to give up its chemical weapons stockpile. • The GCA is a reminder of the importance of preventing future chemical attacks. The international community needs to strengthen the Chemical Weapons Convention and to improve early warning systems. • The GCA is also a reminder of the importance of peace and reconciliation. We must work to find a peaceful solution to the Syrian Civil War and to prevent future conflicts. We must never forget the victims of the GCA. We must also never forget the lessons that this event teaches us. We must work to prevent future wars and to build a more peaceful world

I'm so glad it was helpful! You certainly can... but depending on your assignment, I don't know if your prof would be too impressed with a KZbin video in a citation. I do, however, have links to all the sources I referenced in the video posted in the comments - For your benefit I would suggest using those... especially the actual R2P document published by the ICISS would be a good source to reference in a paper. :) It's not too difficult of a read.

But there are important steps that need to be taken before a humanitarian mission can get on the way. Important discussions about other concerns need to take place first. Otherwise, R2P humanitarian missions can lead to disasters, like of which we have witnessed before. So sometimes, humanitarian issues have to be held back until those important questions have been addressed sufficiently.

This entire R2P concept is predicated upon a huge category error. The decision for war is always - always - a political decision. It cannot be converted into a legal obligation by UN fiat. Political decisions are never consistent. Also, the concept of "international community" is a legal fiction. There is no such community with the military resources to respond. In practice, R2P was implicitly an American responsibility rooted in the US president's power to command over the head of Congress. The nations most in favor of this concept (Europe, Australia, NZ) simply will not develop the capability to enforce it. Thus they remove it to the realm of American politics where they may be safely isolated from its impacts.
