Neither diamonds nor chests got really replaced, diamonds are still very useful, as you need them anyway to get netherite, and chests are still the main storage for the game, the vault is only an alternative for Mojang and map creators for when they make some sort of, well, vault

If the vault only reacts to people who haven't opened it, if they have a comparator output, you could make a trap based on proximity that will, say, explode TNT, but if the maker of the trap uses it, that means it will trigger when other people are near it, but not when the owner is there.

This is an actually smart idea. Skulk tech allows us to receive signals based on actions, so you can code a series of specific actions into a code. If the vault gives off a signal, you can have your group use it up, and then the vault will only react to new players in proximity, while allowing you and your friends to walk over, undetected.

What's most interesting to me here is the capability to now make item names a puzzle aspect. Lots of maps have had multiple choice "quiz" type sections, and of course redstone password systems have existed forever, but with this kind of locking feature you could instead hard code a correct answer/password into a Chest's item data, and have an anvil nearby for renaming.

I think you didn't really realize the point... That has existed in the game for a while. Chest can be locked since I remember, Phoenix was just saying that you could do a similar thing with the vault. Locking chests is not a new addition.

The concept of renaming items to a certain passcode has existed long before. It's done with a piece of renamed paper thrown on a hopper, or flipping levers in the code sequence. The vault simply made it much easier to do.

​@@rudrodeepchatterjee Right on point. It's not meant to be revolutionary, it just automates things while providing a more secure alternative. If a kid decides to go into creative mode during the map to find out the correct passcode then they can hunt down the hopper and copy the item, but with this set up even if they are in creative mode they won't be able to find the correct answer anywhere. This can also be used in the same way to give a key that can only be placed on say gold blocks, which is done in many maps, essentially making the only way to play the map is to actually play it or just skip that specific area (and that usually breaks things). If you wanted to do a similar system prior to the vault block, you would need to know how to check the data of an item which is a lot more lengthy of a process than just editing the block data through a datapack or an item generator. Not revolutionary, just much more secure.

This is very sad. This is the kind of stuff I've developed years ago fully server sided in a plugin for a custom gamemode, I've used the exact same mechanism with data tied to the block... This is very sad because we're getting this kind of stuff too, too late and yet they are only useful for single player adventure maps (or realms?) because servers can implement something like this in less than a few hours.

thats the same reason i quit dead by daylight it didnt feel like the game in the end the caves and cliffs update was already about to make me not like the game but it turned out great it was much to swallow and then while i was busy pulling out dolphins and burning them alive 1.20 dropped i wasnt even done exploring the caves and cliffs update its just too much

It would be super cool if they added an NBT tag to change which item opened it. Or maybe the ability to add different loot tables via datapacks for different items opening it.

they should make it so like the trial spawners have a cooldown for every player, the vaults do too. this means that even in survival singleplayer it is useful for everyone more than once, because i dont honestly think that the current trial spawners and their loot are enough for me to want to come back.

Hopefully the fletching table finally gets a use. Its only been like five years. Seriously though customizable arrows with unique trails, behaviors, and other bonuses would be cool
