Thank you all for the great suggestions! I didn’t mean to sound like I’m sh*tting on Blake in this video so please be kind in the comments. Everyone in this house has made messes, myself included, I’ve just been actively working on mine and they haven’t. But learning new skills is hard and takes time. Blake is naturally messy and has had ADHD his whole life - that commonly goes hand in hand and I’m understanding of that. But a family conversation needs to be had about how cleaning up everyone else’s messes isn’t “mom’s job” especially since I’m currently overwhelmed with this work project. The decluttering is 100% me, though. I’ve brought all my reselling stuff into this house, among all the other things, and I’m ready to purge it and organize it. But I do need the family on board to not undo all my hard work the day after I do it. I will talk with them, although I’ve been beating my head against the wall on this issue with all of them for years. But hopefully once they see me taking care of my own mess, it will inspire them to keep things more tidy. Especially with the kids, when there is stuff everywhere it’s hard for them to even recognize what they need to do. If it’s overwhelming for an adult, it seems impossible for a kid. Blake is another story, but if he could just throw his trash away and get his dang dirty clothes into a hamper I’d have zero complaints. He does do a lot around here and feels like he is at his limit, too. We are both busy, stressed, and exhausted and I understand that. I will be buying a trash can for the bedroom (even though there is one in the bathroom 10 steps away, apparently that’s too far 😂) and discussing a hamper solution that works better for the way his brain works. Hopefully he can figure that out or express it somehow. We may need to trial an error some solutions. I am naturally an obsessively clean and organized person. It’s hard to imagine, I know. 😂I think I was a librarian in another life. We can go into what has changed and how I got here to this state some other time, but the biggest issue is having TOO MUCH STUFF and that’s why we’re starting with decluttering rather than deep cleaning or changing the habits of my family members. I appreciate all the concern for me and my wellbeing, all the tips, and just the overwhelming kindness and love you have shown me. It keeps me going! ❤

As someone with severe ADHD - Not just a trash can in the bedroom. Strategically place it wherever the most trash tends to accumulate. It needs to be specifically in the spot where stuff is already being tossed. Believe me, it's magic. I have small discrete trash cans EVERYWHERE because yes, 10 steps is too far 😅
@Jamie_ChaoticАй бұрын
@@jenn1663thank you for that insight. I believe I had adhd as well but mine manifests much differently if I do have it. More of a compulsive cleanliness and agitation from messes so it’s been very interesting looking into ways to adapt to both of our neurodivergence 😂

A standing hamper might be easier for Blake. I looked at your laundry bag and I thought, "that's too many steps to getting my laundry in! If I can't throw it in, I don't put it in the bin." I also have ADHD, and everything needs to be so simple for me. Good luck 🩷

I was sitting in the middle of my massive, disgusting out of control cluttered home, depressed, teary and no motivation because I’m overwhelmed with how much I have and where to start first. I’ve let my entire life get 100% out of control. You, sweet Jamie, have given me the gentle push to be able to battle one thing every day (or maybe every other day?) But I think once I’m in the process I’m going to enjoy purging and organizing because having a “lottery drawing” jar it gives me hope to get every thing taken care of by the new year! Thank you for giving me hope again! You’re such an inspiration!

My thought….. first, thank for sharing!! Being vulnerable is HUGE! Second, Start with the area that will be noticed first. It will create order spillover into other areas. Main spaces, holidays coming, the kitchen/living/dining area. The banker boxes can go to the garage, any inventory that’s invading the home shared spaces should go to the garage.I’ve seen many resellers use their garages as inventory storage both before and after posting the items, with a photography area in the office. (And post the exercise equipment on hubby’s behalf since he simply hasn’t had time.) I also highly encourage the Dana K White methods-have a finite space for inventory and more can’t be added until there is space-this way you can keep your work and home/shared space separate and is fair for the rest of the family and their use of the home and your own self care sanity. You deserve a calm home as well and to keep business in its allotted space in your life. Oh, one other note…Maybe you could consider a trash can in the bed room so the trash is contained daily and doesn’t get mixed in with your regular belongings.

First time viewer. I’m 68 and just can’t get my house in order. I have physical limitations that limit the amount of time I can work. I have decluttered a lot in the past few months but can’t keep a good daily upkeep. Some due to physical and some due to depression. I think your channel will give me some inspiration. Cats! I have two. Cat litter is heavy! I have started ordering from Walmart so I don’t have to carry it. I don’t have carpet, on purpose, but do find places they have tried to hack up hairballs. Non cat people would never understand! I have a window perch for them that suctions to the window at the pad level and the bottom sits on the window sill. And now that I have Christmas decor out, and I have a lot because I love it, it does make cleaning harder. Glad I found your channel.

Thank you for being here and I hope it helps. I watch other decluttering videos myself for inspiration, too. It is motivating when you see others getting rid of stuff! I’m sorry about your physical limitations, and it’s completely understandable to not be able to do much at a time. The thing we don’t talk about a lot is how physically exhausting cleaning a house can be. In the next few days I’m going to be starting daily short videos for vlogmas where I clean up one small area in my house per day. Things that won’t take more than an hour, but usually take more like 15-30 mins. This method might be something you could try! I’ve started filming them already and I have to say I love it. I appreciate your kind words and thank you again for watching!

Yay! You're back!!! Love the new name too! Girl, I know you are dealing with challenges, but all the more reason to limit how much you actually own and keep it down to a manageable amount. I'd go hard decluttering toys and games for sure since the influx of new stuff for Christmas is going to put both categories over the top. And while I know you want a peaceful bedroom, I think that room is the hardest for you. Its upstairs, so crap never makes it back down. Plus, by the time you go up there you are tired, and that's when stuff just gets set down instead of put away. Instead of a full decluttering of your room, spend 15 mins a day trying to keep it from getting out of control. At least until you can dedicate time to it. Def get Blake a garbage can though and empty when its full. Keep bags in the can (under the current bag) so you don't have to go downstairs for a replacement bag. And if you want to decorate, focus on the living room / shared areas before you deal with the kitchen. The whole family will benefit that way. And the kitchen can be tackled a little at a time. With the vintage business being so busy, you'll make more progress in the house with 15 min room pick ups than 3 day overhauls. Oh, and I saw your comment to someone about wanting a big pile to show how much came out of the boys' room, but as a viewer if you show me pics of 3 piles taken over time, it registers the same as one big pile. You'll be able to say how many bags of stuff was the total. Don't let that hangup keep you from getting things out of the house now! 😘 Oh, and I have no issues with the cat food on the counter 😉
@katespurgeon5572Ай бұрын
Hit up mini areas where you can see quick progress. Example: cardboard, out-grown games, coffee bar, moving things for better flow in pantry/cereal. Glad to see you back. I've referred to your 50% clothes reduction process multiple times!
@Jamie_ChaoticАй бұрын
This is exactly what I started today! I think before tackling whole “rooms” there’s lots of quick areas of progress to be made in the little problem areas. Like the dresser I want to trash by the front door! So quick to go through those drawers and basically dump everything and get it out of here.
@JustNatasha93Ай бұрын
@@Jamie_ChaoticAnd along these lines, maybe you could get a trash bag and just go around and collect trash from all rooms and nothing else. Like solely focus on removing trash from the house.

@melaniehutchinson5306Ай бұрын
As a pro declutter coach ( Dana K White trained and certified) and adhd organizing expert, I think you need to start with visible areas. So start with your front hallway. What people see when they come in. Starting in hidden spaces won’t help with motivation. Using Dana’s five steps will get you there. Think too about like things together, and open easy storage.. so open bins are the best, make it as easy to put away as it is to put it down Think about point of performance , so store things near where you use them. A great example would be a coffee bar zone. Also use your containers as limits, even for inventory to sell to keep that manageable. Hope this helps!

So happy you're back! Definitely agree with putting a trash can in the bedroom. Make things as easy as possible for chaotic brains. I don't have a suggestion where to start decluttering but I do think it would be a good idea to divide your kitchen declutter into different sections to make it less overwhelming and as a way to track your progress. For the stuffed animals in the kids room maybe consider getting one of those bean bags that you can fill with them. That way you have storage that's useful too and it might be easier for the kids to put them away as well.

100%!! I hate the stairs, all of us avoid going up or down them and the clutter piles up on them. It’s a total hazard! I said in our last apartment that I would never live in a place with stairs again but here we are. At least these have carpet so they aren’t as deadly as our last ones, but it’s still a reason we don’t put things away. You have made progress which is awesome! Life happens to all of us and can disrupt progress but the good newsd is that the clutter will sit there patiently waiting for you. Believe in yourself and you will achieve your goal. There are many ways to tackle decluttering and for ADHD I've found it can take a while to stick with routines. I would set up systems and let the decluttering fall naturally in with them. For eg: Food. Dedicate one day for food shopping, of course you can do a pick up shop in between if something was forgotten (Hello ADHD) on food shopping day you bring it home and unpack it straight away WHILST making space for it in fridge freezer pantry which is the decluttering part. toss out of date and rotten foods and anything that has been in the freezer for a year or more. you haven't eaten it in the past year so chances are high you won't this coming year. To begin with food day will be a bit overwhelming but over time it will becoming your routine and then a habit so it won't take up too much brain space. This will take care of your pantry and as you develop routines you will be decluttered. Also there are other ways to do this and whatever actually works for you keep doing it. Anne, Australia 🦘

At the end of the day when I’m really done w everyone n thing…I almost always do a 5 min tidy of kitchen bc I CANNOT stand waking up to a messy kitchen in the am! My point is maybe if each fam member had a 5 min tidy before bed it would help the mess & start new habits for everyone? ❤ WELCOME BACK!🥰🥰
@Jamie_ChaoticАй бұрын
I think something like that is a great idea, and I always think after the kids go to bed, “ah I should have made them pick up xyz before going to bed…” so it’s really not a habit I’ve attempted with them yet. I think once all of my clutter is out of here and it’s more obvious to them what needs to be done, those are skills we all need to work on. Also cleaning up messes as we go through our days and completely finishing a task when we start one… I call Blake “Mr. 75 Percent” because while he IS the one who does the dishes every night, he never does every single dish to leave me with a clean, empty sink in the morning. There is always about 25% left in there. Just one of his funny little neurospicy quirks that I don’t fully understand, he just can’t fully finish anything 😂 But the alternative is that I do the dishes myself and add one more thing to my task list, and I think I’ll actually go crazy if that happens! So 75% it is!
@KarMa-ws3llАй бұрын
@@Jamie_Chaotic perhaps the kids need more bitesized steps? Like...collect any dirty dishes OR dirty laundry OR paper trash or just put all eg Lego in a bin ?? I remeber, for me, as a kid, it was hard "just to clean up the room" or "just organized stuff"; i needed bitesized, clear, actionable steps (its still like this today but what helps me is limiting all stuff going inside the house, especially paper, dishes, and cloths).

I'm glad to have seen your home with all the imperfectness and the not so imperfect... My house is similar, minus the business and cats, but with 4 instead of 2 kids, 3 of them are 16 and over, the youngest is 7. Our house is smaller and we only have 4 bedrooms. The 7 and 16 yo share a room. That's why we still have a lot of toys in our living room. (Dollhouse, play kitchen, doll pram, wooden building blocks, most of the youngest lego...) Our living room is the fullest and least organised. I'm trying, like really trying to make it better, but that involves donating most of my books and arts and crafts things and it evolves slowly... Also we tend to hoard a bit... My oldest 2 and I have been diagnosed with ADHD and ADD, one of them with autism as well. My husbands oldest also thinks she has something but hasn't been tested yet. I think my husband also has a tad bit of ADHD, autism and OCD. He can be really organised in a few areas, but lacks it in other areas... OMG! I’m so glad to see you again! You have a big job ahead of you. I would start in the kitchen first BUT put a lg wastebasket on Blake’s side of the bed and beg him to use it. Do a 10 min. clear-off of your bathroom counter. Also, make an agreement that when anybody goes downstairs, they should carry something down that needs to go down. For some reason that landing really bothers me..
@Jamie_ChaoticАй бұрын
I’m going to get a trash can for Blake’s side so we’ll see what happens. I’ve been begging, pleading, nagging him for literally years to put his dirty laundry in a dirty laundry bag and he just doesn’t do it. He throws it on the floor on top of the bag. I have no idea why, I’ll never understand exactly how his brain works or how to get him to care/remember. So I’m not optimistic about the trash can getting used, or the bag being emptied/replaced when it’s full (unless I do it of course). But we’ll try, maybe he’ll surprise me and prove me wrong. We do already have a “every time you go up or down the stairs, take something with you” rule, but obviously unless I’m standing next to the stairs like a troll under a bridge reminding everyone, it just doesn’t happen 😆 I’m welcome to any suggestions on how to get my family on board to help more. It’s not that I don’t try, the kids do have age appropriate chores and 50% of them do a good job but with my son who has ADHD it’s like pulling teeth. My husband also has uncontrolled ADHD and I suspect I do as well, which might be a big part of the issues in this house. But mostly I think no one else in the house cares what it looks like. They’re all happy as clams living in filth and I’m repulsed by it. And if it does bother them, it doesn’t bother them enough to do something about it. So I’m not sure if they’ll ever actually help. I’m trying to instead get rid of most everything so that it’s easier for me to just reset the house myself.

@@Jamie_Chaotic What about one of those hampers that's made for kids that's a basketball hoop and if he makes the shot it goes in the hamper??? I wonder if it just needs to be another style of hamper that works better for his brain. Maybe ask him what you could get him that would help him keep it tidy. Maybe a hamper in the bathroom makes more sense to him 🤷♀

Thank you for sharing your home with us. I admire your determination and openness, allowing us to see the "before." There are some battles not worth engaging. Pick up your husband's clothes and put them in the hamper. Two seconds of your time isn't worth high blood pressure. It took me years to realize that my husband has many wonderful traits, but he wasn't ever going to put his socks in the hamper, lol. A garbage can on his side of the bed will be useful, even if you're throwing away his trash. Also, a trash can by his desk will be helpful, hopefully, lol. You have a wonderful family. Your idea of decluttering will help keep your home organized, I think. Our house is turned upside down. We brought my 93-year-old sister-in-law in to live with us without having time to prepare our home for the move. I'm overwhelmed. I like how you give yourself grace and accept that a job is good enough for now. Very healthy! Take care, Linda 🦋

I have little trash cans in each room that I empty once a week. I have a little basket for random socks and when I do laundry I go through the basket to find missing socks. In the kitchen I only have a few coffee mugs so that we are forced to wash them and just let them sit around the house. Same with plates and bowls. Basically I have 12 each and that’s it. I don’t have a lot of choices as far as snacks. I keep food choices very simple. On a side note, I would move the desk out of the office and use the office solely as a “storage unit” and place the desk somewhere else in the house just to be able to keep all the business clutter in one room and the spill over in garage. It’s nicer to see a desk in the living space rather than boxes. As far as the kids rooms, I would take the closet doors off and put up cream colored curtains and I would also put cream colored curtains in the windows because it makes the space feel calmer and also feel bigger. I would have a basket in the where all the cleans clothes go and a basket where all the dirty clothes go and they can put their clean clothes up. I would put a lot of the stuffed animals in baskets at the top of the closet. You will be able to get a lot more use out of the closet without doors.
@kathleenkaleookalanismith8724Күн бұрын
The other things is before I did anything else in my home, I would spend the day taking all trash and all donation items out of the house and getting rid of it. It’s much better to do that then constantly moving them from room to room.

@38:59 - Ditto here. I used to use other parent's behavior to figure out what was happening. We were late almost every day because there was still a line of parents dropping off their children. Little did I know that 7:30 the children were expected to be in the classroom in their seats instead of being dropped off at the door. But since I always saw other parents lined up dropping their children off I thought we must be on time...whack me on the head. We eventually had to do the whole tardiness routine, all because I some how missed that little detail (at 7:30 children are in their seats in the class). Ugh. Had to chime in with that found memory...

I am so happy you are back. Missed you like crazy. I am just wanting to offer a suggestion . When things get chaotic, it's very hard to know where to start. I was thinking if you can do a honey do list. This gives him an idea of what to do first. And you can organize the list of tasks that are less than 15 minutes. That's what we do and it seems to really help.
@Jamie_ChaoticАй бұрын
That’s a very good suggestion. We used to have a family task app where u would put things on there I wanted him to do. I think it just became too overwhelming for him and he started ignoring it all and doing nothing so I gave up. I think we need to sit down and come up with a new list or app or plan but I can only present a task or two per day otherwise he shuts down with overwhelm.

@heathercox9231Ай бұрын
@Jamie_Chaotic progress over perfection is a motto i heard over on tt. It was nice to know that I wasn't alone. And if all I did was take the trash out of my nest (side of the bed), then that's okay. I don't need to overhaul every room every day. It's okay to just be. Resting is also productive. I came from a every Sunday deep clean household. It's hard to relax knowing I could be doing something, anything.... but I'm so burnt out after doing that for 20 years. Not to mention health issues and family issues 🤷♀️ give yourself some grace!! I think you've made wonderful progress. And if those areas pile up again, we get to watch you reset! ❤️❤️❤️
@Jamie_ChaoticАй бұрын
This is all really good advice that I need to hear. I don’t ever give myself a rest day, there are chores and work to do 7 days a week, with moments of fun and relaxation mixed in… but it sure would feel different if there was one day a week to just REST. I honestly don’t know if I could do it, I’ve been go go go for so long 😅

I'm glad to see you back. I kept checking to see if you were still posting. I suggest you do the boy's room soon. Getting a big bin for toys to go in the closet will free up space in their room. It will make it easier for them to keep it clean themselves. Maybe you can get them to help declutter some toys. They will know which toys they don't play with anymore. Getting them to get the toys to donation centers in time for Christmas is a good goal for you all. ❤
@Jamie_ChaoticАй бұрын
Yes with Christmas coming, cutting down the toys is something we do every year. “Santa won’t bring you new things if he sees all these toys on floor and sees that you have a bunch you don’t even play with!” They’re really good about letting things go. The stuffed animals are the only thing my youngest son doesn’t want to let go of. He has a hard time letting any go, so we just need a better storage solution for now. He does actually play with them constantly so I’m ok with it. I know the stuffed animal phase doesn’t last forever and he really loves them.

I think I would like to see the various pockets of the lounge that need decluttering. So the board games for what will likely be a quick win. The coffee table. Kids table reset (that's not really a once and done as you know but it's good to keep on top of it, and then get that drawer unit decluttered and see if you can get that out of the house. At the moment it's an extra surface and empty surfaces attract clutter so if you can empty it out and remove it altogether that will help. It will also make the lounge feel less cramped. If it feels like too much in one go pick a drawer to do at a time. I would giveaway the empty banker boxes. If the aim is to declutter further then you shouldn't need them and they are just in the way at the moment. You have that lovely globe behind them and the rowing machine that would be nice to see properly as you walk into the room once those items have gone. A suggestion for the bed room is if Blake tends to dump his laundry in that spot then maybe put a small basket there for him to chuck the items into. That way they feel contained at least. Then couple that with my suggestion in my other comment about taking them out of the room as you leave the room to go downstairs. If you are worried about going up and down the stairs maybe get a large cloth tote or laundry basket to chuck any items into as you go downstairs, then take them to the right rooms and put the tote of the banister so you can use it to take anything back upstairs or just take it back up with you when you go back up there later in the day so it's ready for the next time. Love your glass vase collection btw.
@caryface1886Ай бұрын
So what I'm thinking is for you to write a list of every room and every area that you are not happy with and then look at the area that makes you the most frustrated and start there. Or if you want, you can put little pieces of paper of all the areas and just pick them out of a bowl. For me, I focused on what made me the most frustrated. And that just seemed to calm me.
@Jamie_ChaoticАй бұрын
I’m liking that paper in a bowl idea! Haha! That could be fun for a video too. I’m thinking of starting with all the small, quick problem areas like the dresser by the front door I want to empty out and move out of here, the landing at the top of the stairs, the games, etc. I could totally put those things into a bowl and draw them out one at a time. Thank you for that idea!!
@sarahkinsey5434Ай бұрын
@@Jamie_Chaotic April from The Space Maker Method likes quick wins and timers, so tops of dressers and cabinets, small storage things like that front door dresser, etc. Another good idea for any room is first the obvious trash/recycling. Then things that don't belong, but that will become easier as the volume decreases and more things have homes.

One of the things I regret when my children were little is not decluttering more. I was a keeper, as in I wanted to keep everything, and in doing that I forgot that empty space is important to be able to enjoy what we had. We had way too many toys (and other stuff) and it would creep down the hallway into the living room, etc. The container concept would have been very useful to know, it is described by a lovely declutter helper named Dana K. White, also known as A Slob Comes Clean. Might check her out, she has a way to deal with items without using emotion, just common sense (well, it kinda is once it is pointed out, I just didn’t have the common sense until it was pointed out to me).
