Wer kam denn bloß auf die Idee, die schöne Kunstmalerei mit gelber Farbe zu übermalen? Ich dachte schon, beim Entfernen dieser mit "Paint Stripper" und Stahlwolle geht auch die Bauerskunst verloren. Schrecksekunde! Doch tatsächlich blieben die gemalten Ornamente erhalten und strahlen jetzt wieder in altem Glanz! Wunderschöne Arbeit, wunderschöne Truhe!

Das schwierigste ist ja bei so einem Projekt, nur soviel wie nötig zu restaurieren und möglichst viel Substanz zu erhalten. Das ist hier sehr gut gelungen und man sieht der Truhe nicht mehr an, dass sie übermalt wurde. Sie wirkt jetzt wie in Würde gealtert.

You did a great job restoring the chest and keeping it so close to original. I saw the jar labeled knockem leim, it translated to knock glue. Is it hide glue?

The key tag was metallic blank in the Original. The color on the key tag was from the overcoated lacquer

What kind of paint stripper do you use and why doesn’t it remove the original paint?

It is a commercial stripper. Both layers of paint are dissolved but at different times. I therefore work in several steps. You also have to consider the temperature and the degree of solution and also the contact pressure. I got it wrong about 10 times before it worked once.

Ich würde es nie übers Herz bringen so ein schönes Stück mit beigem Lack zu überstreichen. Wieder ein Stück Geschichte gerettet. Eine Frage, womit waren diese Truhen bemalt? Ich hörte es sei früher eher Kaseinfarbe als Ölfarbe verwendet worden.

Vielen Dank für den Kommentar. Kasein wurde Früher häufig als Bindemittel verwendet weil man das auf dem Bauernhof hatte. Es gab aber auch Mehl, Zucker, Ei oder Bier als Bindemittel.

@@Restaurierung Vielen Dank für die schnelle Antwort. Ei als Bindemittel sagt mir was. Eitempera ist ja auch einfach herzustellen. Zucker funktioniert gewiss auch, so lange es nicht wasserfest sein muss. Ich kenne zumindest Aquarellfarbe auf Honigbasis. Bier wird auch klebrig wenn es trocknet, aber Mehl, das ist mir neu. Muss man da noch irgendwas dazumischen wie den Sumpfkalk bei der Kaseinfarbe und wofür wurde diese Farbe verwendet? Auch für Möbel? Das würde ich gerne mal ausprobieren.

Nein nichts dazu mischen aber das Mehl muss aufbereitet werden. Die meisten Farben in der bäuerlichen Möbelmalerei sind nicht wasserfest. Sie müssen erst fixiert werden. Zb. mit Schellack

Commercial stripping agent? The original paintings are nearly still in tact thereafter. What was the original paint composed of that it endured the stripping chemical/s?

The old colors always consist of color pigments (ground earth) and a binding agent (e.g. beer, sugar or eggs). The farmers had no money so they used the stuff that was available on the farm.
